_alex_··on Interview: “The Automat,“ which was ”the coolest cafeteria of them all“
If you find yourself in Amsterdam, there’s an automat chain all over the city called Febo. I really like it.

do you pack a little bottle of dawn in your bag? Do you use it as a general detergent, or do you use it to spot-clean stains? I love this idea, just curious about the logistics.
_alex_··on The problem with Bitcoin miners
Then why isnt bcash or bsv more valuable than bitcoin?
_alex_··on Crypto Startup That Wants to Scan Everyone’s Eyeballs Is Having Some Trouble
Such a privacy nightmare. It's mind-boggling that a group of engineers brought this thing to life, the whole time thinking "this is a good idea. we'll compile a database of people's iris' and associate it with a public transaction ledger". The only world in which this makes sense is one where an express goal is to help the state track the money of individuals (you might like that in a democratic society with strong traditions around rule of law and due process, but may like it less in authoritarian nations).

What does an automatic cost limit look like when you have metered storage services? Start killing customer data?
_alex_··on Bitcoin's fungibility graveyard
it's gonna get even more interested when lightning channels look like normal transactions because of taproot
_alex_··on Bitcoin's fungibility graveyard
In what way is Lightning a joke compared to what's happening on ethereum? People are using Lightning to get more remittance money to their families, while over in ethereum folks are speculating on jpegs and yield farming ever-more-unsound token schemes.
_alex_··on Bitcoin's fungibility graveyard
that's an ignorant statement. There is a ton of development and deployment happening to make the Lightning Network be a high-throughput, low cost way to move bitcoin around the world. A lot of people are working to make bitcoin more useful to more people.

Hey now, its not criminality, its jurisdictional arbitrage

_alex_··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
Yep. Want to accept onchain bitcoin? When a customer wants to pay, generate a fresh address. Store that address in a dab associated with the customer id. When they come for the service, see if that address has received payment. Easy peasy. You can run your own node and do this all yourself, or you can use services that run the software for you and work on callbacks or api calls.

Want to accept lightning (bitcoin over a low cost and high speed payment network)? It’s an api call to generate an invoice and another api call to see if that invoice has been paid. Again you can run everything yourself or use a managed service. Bitcoin make programmatic payment processing SO MUCH EASIER than traditional payment rails.

_alex_··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
If you want to take a credit card, you need to open a bank account, sign up with a payment processor and integrate with them (stripe makes this easy, what if you can’t or don’t want to use stripe?), handle chargebacks, etc.

If you want to accept bitcoin, you run a piece of software and write a few lines of code.

_alex_··on Is the big tech era ending?
web3 just needs to come up with some problems for all it's solutions
_alex_··on Is the big tech era ending?
that works as long as there are enough of you for every team/app/service/whatever to build and operate all that around the clock and without bus risk.

A lot of these threads end up talking about "scaling" from a pure hardware perspective. Once you start talking about medium-to-large companies, the real scaling headache is people, process, and organizations.

_alex_··on 100 years of whatever this will be
It's not a coincidence that a lot of cryptocurrency projects are started and maintained by relatively young and inexperienced programmers.

_alex_··on Ask HN: What's the best way to secure your workstation?
I’ve been thinking about something similar. I have an old laptop that I’ve been thinking of throwing proxmox or something similar on and just hosting VMs for my “daily driver” laptop to connect to

_alex_··on Notes on Web3
30% premine of a token and then hyping the hell out of it is a great way to make a lot of money really fast
_alex_··on Notes on Web3
how do you ensure that someone stores the data for at least as long as the item? are they making regular storage payments?
_alex_··on Notes on Web3
onchain smart contract execution is a fundamentally broken concept. Everyone acknowledges this in the move to rollups and other "second layers" that execute offchain and then publish zero-knowledge proofs to the chain.
_alex_··on U.S. house prices are rising exponentially faster than income
People don’t want to pay for things that are infinite. People who make digital things want to be paid. You end up either with drm or tokenization.

I think the dystopia comes more from everything being paid for by ads (which demand more detailed metrics and engagement) than mobile/cloud.
