_a1_··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
Large? It uses 1.5GB of RAM on average. Common Windows VM uses 6GB if you want it to be able to run a common application on it.

A law that they have to pay you for using their free service?

I admit that my experience with RR is the same as experience with deep space exploration (equals zero), so your comment was a quite entertaining read. Thanks ;)

> Otherwise it's just a non-issue.

Nah, sorry, but you're wrong. I had to upgrade my laptop because I wanted to run Firefox, IntelliJ IDEA and an Android emulator on the same machine. Nothing else. This was not possible on 8GB ram.

So it's not like multiple VMs are needed and above scenario is pretty average for a common mobile developer (but still not an average user, I admit)

Second thing is, lots of games require 16 GB RAM. Maybe gamers are still not average users, I don't know.

TBH this sounds like Windows '95 era "RAM doublers" like SoftRAM 95 :D

Rolls Royce isn't a tool for the chauffeur, but it's a tool for the passenger. It's a tool for distributing the information that the passenger is wealthy enough to own it, and it enables more conversation options with certain NPCs ;p
_a1_··on WSL Isn't Linux
TBH the "Windows" way would be to use the Microsoft Store. Chocolatey/scoop is just a Linux way of installing software, ported to Windows. Even conemu is a Linux way of managing terminals; the Windows way would be to use GUI all the way.
_a1_··on Jira on premises end of life starts feb 2021
It's like deadlines. Developers hate deadlines, but one thing that developers hate more is the lack of them.

If not native Markdown support (without hacky macros), then I hope it's death.
_a1_··on Python overtakes Java to become the second-most popular programming language
This is just TIOBE, nothing more. If one wants other markers, it's possible to use different benchmarks/indexes. For example, I like this one:

_a1_··on GitHub Source Code Leak
> Some users, such as Drew DeVault, suggest Microsoft is attempting to centralise open-source.

Of course Drew DeVault thinks this way. He's trying to monetize his own github-like product, the sourcehut, so less people using GitHub means more people using sourcehut.

_a1_··on Uno: Single-Codebase for Windows, WebAssembly, iOS, macOS, Android and Linux
Is it really that worse than Java / Electron?

Is this a direct competitor to Flutter?

_a1_··on Ask HN: Good C++ code bases to read?
It's probably because there are lots of non-C++ programmers who are curious about C++.
_a1_··on XMHell: Handling 38GB of UTF-16 XML with Rust
With SAX (Simple API for XML) api, both UTF16 to UTF8 conversion and unlimited XML size can be parsed even under 1mb of RAM. It's harder than DOM processing, but SAX was created for dealing with huge amounts of data inside XML.
