__xtrimsky··on The Overprotected Kid (2014)
No, haven't really watched Star Trek except one movie. But I'll take a look at this episode, thanks :)
__xtrimsky··on The Overprotected Kid (2014)
because I don't believe it taught me anything. Even my memories aren't really happy memories, it's more like crazy memories.

But as I am in the US now, I can't really even consider the same level of freedom, I would just end up in jail.

I'll just try to give my kids as much freedom as I can. For my 2-year-old for example, when we are outside, I let her do anything as long as it's safe. Jumping into puddles, touching things covered in dirt, let her choose the streets she wants to walk on. At this age it's not really extreme yet :)

BTW: I am a germaphobe. But as long as my own house is clean I'm ok with that. I just get my kid cleaned up as soon as she gets home. It is hard for me to watch her jump in puddles, but she is having so much fun :)

__xtrimsky··on The Overprotected Kid (2014)
Yea I'm worried about that too. I was raised in France but live in the US, as an 8 year old I used to explore lot's of things. But I'm not actually sure I want to let my kids do the same, I remember doing a lot of stupid things too and I'm not sure any of this freedom taught me anything:

- touching dog poop to enter a "ninja" club

- entering many private properties

- climbing dangerously high trees

- crossing quadruple railroad tracks with TGVs passing on them.

- putting my head next to a passing TGV (about 2 feet away), just to see how it feels and be scared

- jumping off high ledges to see how far I can fall without hurting myself.

- walking near ledges with a 2 story drop.

- playing with explosive fireworks, big enough to blow up a couple of fingers. I could just buy these as a kid in France.

This is just a small list, and I was honestly a very quiet, calm kid. I just had an active friend. And as I said, I don't remember this teaching me anything.

Whereas I remember spending time programming (visual programming) at 8 years old, and that was awesome and taught me a lot.

You should change the way the rates are displayed.

When I saw 5$ (p/m), I thought it was Per Message. And I instantly closed the window. Later on I came back just to check for another country, and noticed on another page that it was per month.

But I highly recommend you change:

Pricing (p/m)

to :

Pricing (per month)

__xtrimsky··on Mac OS X Isn’t Safe Anymore: The Crapware / Malware Epidemic Has Begun
Not a single company I worked for. I guess it's simply because JS doesn't include hashing, whereas PHP it's simply a matter of calling sha1(). But it is pretty easy to include, I guess people just don't think about it.
__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: Why keep living?
My two cents:

Try meditating (specifically with the HeadSpace app if you own a smartphone). Meditating helps you concentrate on the present instead of thinking of the past. For example when I take a walk outside, it helps me appreciate it a lot more even if its cold and uncomfortable. And I don't spend time thinking of useless stuff like I should have worked more at school, or I should have done this and that.

__xtrimsky··on You Can Spend $750 in International Data Roaming in One Minute on AT&T
I just buy an unlocked cell phone and buy a sim card for each country I go to. When I go to France, costs me 20 Euros for unlimited calls (including to the US), unlimited texts and 3Gb of data.

What if someone wants to call me? If I'm abroad it's mostly for vacation, I can give my new number to family members wishing to contact me. If I can't do that? I still get texts and voicemails through Google Voice on my phone. And if needed I can enable calls through data on my phone using hangouts.

If you type "open the wire door" in the chat, it opens a secret window with Limewire running in it.
__xtrimsky··on Show HN: Database Labs – Postgres as a Service
It looks like a safe method is to make the innodb_buffer_pool_size a lot bigger, and it will in fact store all the db in memory.

(Otherwise you need to set up a backup or a replication in case the server goes down)

I'll play around with it, thanks!

__xtrimsky··on Show HN: Database Labs – Postgres as a Service
So basically you are clearly specifying you are using DigitalOcean to host it, and just multiply the price by 2 :/.

I don't know if that would attract someone, it doesn't work for me. Not enough features for twice the price. I would advice only a small increase (+10% or so).

Quick general question:

I have a server in Montreal. My server hosting doesn't have SSDs for cheap. For a semi-big database (2gb), is it better for me to get a DigitalOcean with SSD in New York? Would that improve my database, or will the ping slow it down too much. (in my example the ping would be of about 23ms)

__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: I hate JavaScript
Everyone hates it at first. Just learn it raw, learn jQuery, learn Javascript OOP.

You will get used to it. (and maybe like it at the end)

__xtrimsky··on GitHub.com momentarily blacklisted in Russia
ok thank you. I actually mostly know russian, but that word made no sense to me.
__xtrimsky··on GitHub.com momentarily blacklisted in Russia
Small question, git noob here. The comments that we see on github (outside of the commit messages), are these comments stored on github, or is it something git related.

Logically I would think the comments are just an extra layer added by github, but theoritically git could have comments also decentralized and stored, this is why I'm asking.

__xtrimsky··on GitHub.com momentarily blacklisted in Russia
Google Translate says the Decision Maker is CPS (Child Protective Services). So it's most likely just a mistake.

__xtrimsky··on Introducing a more powerful Dropbox Pro
I have tried Owncloud, but I don't want to host a service myself (I do have the knowledge to do so). But on average it would cost me more than paying a service. I"m trying to minimize my monthly costs, it's hard to beat 8.25$ for a good server for Owncloud.
__xtrimsky··on Introducing a more powerful Dropbox Pro
I don't need 1TB, but I need more than 100GB.

If Google Drive offered 500GB I would go with them, for now I'll stay with Dropbox as it's the same pricing (Dropbox's client is better quality).

__xtrimsky··on Introducing a more powerful Dropbox Pro
I do care about dropbox, it's the only cloud system that works well on linux systems . It used to be overpriced but now the pricing is good. Also Google Drive is terrible on Windows if like me you have a lot of files. One drive is limited to 2GB of file size.

I have yet to find a great alternative to it.

__xtrimsky··on Two Countries, Two Vastly Different Phone Bills
I don't think you researched well enough, 5$ saving is nothing. tell us which plans you were deciding between.

For example Straight Talk, is 45$ / month, everything unlimited. And you can use either AT&T's coverage, either T-Mobile's or Verizon's (and their phone too).

And that's for everything unlimited, you can find cheaper if you don't need unlimited.

__xtrimsky··on Two Countries, Two Vastly Different Phone Bills
I pay 45$ / month for everything unlimited with Straight Talk (uses AT&T's coverage).

And my wife pays 30$ for 100 minutes, unlimited text and 5GB data with T-Mobile.

even 67$ I find that pretty expensive.
