_Codemonkeyism··on Mailgun Acquires Mailjet
I feel with all the people who left the horrible Mailgun (we've used them for 5 years), switched to Mailjet (we luckily didn't) and are back with Mailgun now.
_Codemonkeyism··on Ask HN: Feasible Alternative to the MacBook Pro?
Tried to switch from an MBP to a XPS13. XPS13 (maxed out CPU, memory, screen) was the worst notebook I ever had, two power supplies broke, battery broke, fan broke and BIOS made a fire-alarm-level alarm every time it booted, service was abysmal, although I had a business level all-care next-day package they wanted to jump me through many loops, install firmware updates etc. before they did anything - in the end they would not come and fix the laptop.

Never again.

_Codemonkeyism··on WeWork says will file to withdraw IPO
In many enterprises people know that sh happens. But saying so is usually a career limiting move.
_Codemonkeyism··on A large number of Stack Exchange mods resigning over new policies
People enjoy power over other people. The benefit of closing questions or moderation on Stack Overflow is questionable.
_Codemonkeyism··on A large number of Stack Exchange mods resigning over new policies
Stack Exchange has developed the same group of power people that rule Wikipedia. They have arcane rules with the major effect of keeping people out.

Stack Exchange is good to read, but hard to ask a question that is not immediately due to some rule.

_Codemonkeyism··on T. Boone Pickens Farewell Letter
Those people here are not anti-Musk but anti-Musk-holydom.
_Codemonkeyism··on Toyota is trying to put solar panels on a Prius to charge battery during the day
To sum up the comments:

Everyone commutes hours so this is not enough (as always readers assume everyone lives in the US).

Everyone has a house so put them there (see comment about US).

Tesla doesn't have it so it doesn't make sense.

_Codemonkeyism··on Turn off DoH, Firefox
And route all (Firefox) internet traffic of the world through the US.
_Codemonkeyism··on Turn off DoH, Firefox
I know it was a rhetorical question but here it needs to be spelled out:

None.

_Codemonkeyism··on Turn off DoH, Firefox
I was never a conspiracy buff but the hordes of shills here who think it's a good idea to send the whole worlds browsing habits to the US a country with practically no protection of data lets this seem like a long prepared operation.

The Chinese had to hack BGP to get that kind of data for a limited time.

_Codemonkeyism··on Experimenting with same-provider DNS-over-HTTPS upgrade
I'm not in the business of data, so I don't know what the browsing habit of millions of people are worth.
_Codemonkeyism··on Experimenting with same-provider DNS-over-HTTPS upgrade
Does anyone know how much money Mozilla gets from Cloudflare? Do they get any? I've tried to find something in Mozilla financial declarations but haven't found anything.
_Codemonkeyism··on Sites with dumb password rules
Would love to have a chrome plugin that shows the requirements next to the site login.
_Codemonkeyism··on Camera sales are falling sharply
(as a hobby photographer) I went to Norway to hike 680km. Agonizing for weeks if I should take my DSLR and lenses. Took only a OnePlus6T with Google camera, Open Camera and PhotoMap. I'm happy with the results and the 2kg less in the backpack.
_Codemonkeyism··on Google’s GDPR Workaround
Executives commit crimes and the company pays the fine. This way crimes are not prevented.

Basically get no spam calls in Germany, sometimes from companies where I'm a customer.
_Codemonkeyism··on How to Find Hidden Cameras in Your Airbnb
Same here in Berlin, although it's mostly illegal there are many AirBnB flats because there are no controls. Having drunken students making party all the time isn't very fun.
_Codemonkeyism··on Russia’s permafrost is melting and it could have a devastating global effect
Melting permafrost is releasing methane and CO2. Rising methane and CO2 levels will increase climate change. There is no "sensational" or "skew". This is like all this "may" "might" for 40 years that got us into the situation we are now. We should have said "will" 40 years ago.

_Codemonkeyism··on 'My son spent £3,160 in one game'
People have reasons for addiction, stress, problems, depression, loneliness, boredom. They will fill it with addiction what is easily available to them, gets them out of their problems and works. Video games are more easily available to many compared to alcohol + cheaper.

If you don't remove the cause of the addiction, the person will fall back or into a new one.

_Codemonkeyism··on To Break Google’s Monopoly on Search, Make Its Index Public
What Google has is "I'll google that".
_Codemonkeyism··on German state of Hesse bans cloud services from schools due to privacy risks
With the students I've worked (interns) with they had all "MS Office" at school but don't know the basics so I have to explain e.g. how format a document correctly and not use e.g. 'bold' to all of them when they start.
_Codemonkeyism··on Boeing 737 Max ordered by Ryanair undergoes name change
Will now avoid all 737 - the 737 MAX is clearly not a good design with the forward engines.
_Codemonkeyism··on EU's GPS satellites have been down for four days in mysterious outage
It looks more like they took the service down intentionally due to problems - it's still in beta. And kept the SAR signal intentionally up.
_Codemonkeyism··on Florida DMV sells personal info to private companies, marketing firms
One of the good things about GDPR is, when you give data away, you're responsible to make sure and control it's not misused. You can't blame the party which you gave the data to.
_Codemonkeyism··on Florida DMV sells personal info to private companies, marketing firms
Many European countries are the same, e.g. governments made sure GDPR doesn't apply to them. For example in Germany government sells data.
_Codemonkeyism··on Jony Ive’s Mistakes: When Beautiful Design Is Bad Design
I loved my cube which I tuned with new graphics cards, processor cards - there was a whole community around extending cubes with hardware without active cooling.
