Zenbit_UX··on "Localhost tracking" explained. It could cost Meta €32B
A tale as old as time…
Zenbit_UX··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney, who does work for YC and startups. AMA
When it comes to Canadians working in the US on a TN, are we allowed to accept promotions (title, comp or both) without going through reapproval of our visa? Are there any nuances here like caps on how high a salary increase could be before needing a reassessment? Maybe increases in equity don’t count?

Also if the reassessment is denied does your original visa still remain valid or are you risking it all for the promotion?

Zenbit_UX··on $20K Bounty Offered for Optimizing Rust Code in Rav1d AV1 Decoder
That’s a pretty strong stance.

I’m sitting at my desk doing 133t code challenges for free right now. The idea of optimizing something that both matters and could result in a payout of any amount sounds appealing given my context.

I think you underestimate the amount of people willing to do things for free or for the sake of knowledge itself.

And before you suggest that must mean I’m in a dire financial situation, I’m not.

Zenbit_UX··on $20K Bounty Offered for Optimizing Rust Code in Rav1d AV1 Decoder
Your comment reads like the school room dilemma of if your mom gives you cookies to share with your friends at lunch she better bring enough for everyone.

This is being done to prove a point, that rust is just as efficient as c while being memory safe.

Your idea is misaligned with the goals of the contest and more a moral complaint on “fairness”. Where do you get this notion that any entity offering their own funds in a contest needs to distribute it evenly?

Zenbit_UX··on $20K Bounty Offered for Optimizing Rust Code in Rav1d AV1 Decoder
The reason for that disclaimer should be obvious, any improvements to the assembly code would also benefit dav1d in c, therefore the rust code still remains worse off by comparison.

I’m sure both the dav1d and dav1d communities would appreciate improvements to the assembly code, but the goal of this contest is to improve the rust implementation only.

Zenbit_UX··on Ask HN: How are you acquiring your first hundred users?
My guess is that the GP put a AI chat bot on their site, and people started asking it for things completely unrelated to his business as a way to get free access to chatgpt without an account.

It’s actually quite fun, whenever you see an ai chat bot asking you if you have any questions ask it for its favorite cupcake recipe. If it answers its a poorly configured LLM.

Zenbit_UX··on The curse of knowing how, or; fixing everything
I was hit pretty hard by this blog post, it felt deep and targeted at me. Not because of code but from a desire to fix the current state of the world and the knowledge that even if I tried I don’t think it would make a difference.

The same burden of moral responsibility can be applied to any systematic dysfunction. Those that know how to fix institutions, economies or governments are feeling this pretty strongly right now.

And even in the places where I’m not even sure how to fix it like the radicalization or both genders, or various ethnic groups into hating each other…

In my downtime my brain annoyingly tries to tackle these problems until I’m overwhelmed by the conclusions I’ve arrived at - many times the inevitable result is that things will continue to get _much worse_ before they get better.

Maybe I should take up crosswords.

Zenbit_UX··on The curse of knowing how, or; fixing everything
> I've found that the problem is mostly rooted in a culture obsessed with novelty. And not novelty with a point (a truly better solution comes out), but novelty for novelty's sake (something new to talk about that's "popular" in dev circles, even if it's junk).

Ah yes, seems like you’ve discovered Clojure, and it’s bastard child ClojureScript.

Zenbit_UX··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2025)
I’ll never understand why a company looking for a “founding engineer” would mandate a particular stack…

You either trust the “founding” candidate to be a founding engineer and therefore trust their judgment or you want a regular engineer to continue with whatever jank the founders hacked together and the “founding” title is meaningless.

Zenbit_UX··on Samsung Q990D unresponsive after 1020 firmware update
My thoughts on security vulnerabilities is that they exist on any out of date firmware and that should be expected. I’ve never rolled back to factory settings and assumed that this device is now exposable on a DMZ.

Specifically I’m talking about consumer devices, which are almost always behind a NAT config + firewall. If your soundbar has a vulnerability it’s pretty much irrelevant if someone has already breached your network.

If we’re talking about enterprise networking equipment, I still stand by my concerns that the the owner should be able to revert back to stock but the burden of responsibility is on the technician configuring this device, not the manufacturer.

Zenbit_UX··on Samsung Q990D unresponsive after 1020 firmware update
IMO this is a terrible idea for many reasons but the most important of which is: As a consumer I should have the right to have my device revert any b.s. update and get my setup to how it was the day I bought it.

So many companies have begun rolling out updates that makes the device I purchased call home before allowing any user functions and if/when that server goes down my device becomes a brick. This behavior essentially invalidates my ownership of the product and renders it to a service, provided at will by the manufacturer.

Your idea ensures my device will one day become a brick as soon as the manufacturer decides to mark their update requiring internet check-ins “safe”.

If you think I’m exaggerating check out Louis Rossmann‘s YouTube channel.

Zenbit_UX··on Ancient switch to soft food gave us overbite–the ability to pronounce 'f's,'v'
It’s not evolution, just look at your mouth breather friend as an example. Recessed jaw, poor intake of breath due to a constricted airway, sleep apnea, gerd, bruxism, cavities… it’s all related.
Zenbit_UX··on Ancient switch to soft food gave us overbite–the ability to pronounce 'f's,'v'
Na, the worst thing to ever happen to us was hyperbole.
Zenbit_UX··on How are you doing?

Zenbit_UX··on XCheck at Meta: Why it exists and how it works
If I were designing a system like this, I'd likely implement a reputation system for reporters (users who report, not journalists).

When you report content for the first time your reputation score is 0.5, if the content is of a celebrity or public figure, your reputation will invisibly drop, enough of these and your score will be so low as to not be a useful flag when evaluating whether content is objectionable.

On the other side, if the content is reviewed as violating ToS, your rep will increase.

With a system like this the fake reports and brigading will quickly lose its power, eventually all users who abuse reports will be ranked so low as to not matter.

A threshold of rep score can be set before the content is auto removed. Maybe something like 25pts in order for it to be removed, and that's after adding together all the rep of the reporting users.

Zenbit_UX··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
This is what I'm going to use when the next time someone asks me to explain what tech debt is.
Zenbit_UX··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2022)
Just wanted to let you know that your obscured bit.ly links + choice of hiring site which forces applicants to create an account, added so much extra friction to the application process I decided to not bother.
Zenbit_UX··on The most satisfying checkbox
Got all excited to try this and then found out it was iOS only... Any plans to bring it to android?
Zenbit_UX··on A religious sect landed Google in a lawsuit
Disagree, shaming someone for poor behavior is how a society operates.
Zenbit_UX··on Update on Hiring Plans
Well, the problem as I see it is, I just gave my 2 weeks notice when I accepted your offer. I might have even given it earlier and pushed the start date a week forward so I could get a nice gap week to decompress between jobs.

Now, at this new company I've been excited to work for, I receive an email telling me that I in fact do not have a job next week and I am actually unemployed.

My options range from extremely bad (begging for old job back) to mildly embarrassing (attempting to re-accept a previously declined counter offer).

Zenbit_UX··on Microsoft employees say 'golden boy' executives are still running wild
That's not what's being discussed. Your projections on morality - thankfully - do not make someone a sexual predator.
Zenbit_UX··on Motorcycles are much more dangerous than every other mode of transportation
Yes. This is common knowledge and should be a surprise to no one.

What is interesting however, is that despite the risks - which are known to riders - they still choose to ride them. As a rider of a very fast bike, I do wish more people drove them so it would give drivers more perspective on motorcycles and hopefully make them more careful and aware of them.

Zenbit_UX··on Bugs are evolving to eat plastic, study finds
The fact that you don't see the problem _is_ the problem. Fucking with ecosystems using bar napkin math is not a thing we should entertain.
Zenbit_UX··on How This Ends
This doesn't make sense or you are omitting key information.

If a homeowner rents their place for more than it costs them in mortgage + property taxes and makes $200 on top, that's fine and quite a nice deal. However you're suggesting they're also subsidizing their own rental and +$200.

That only makes sense if they're renting well below their means or in a different market entirely while their home is in an ultra prime location. If not the renter of their home should simply have rented out the place the owners are living at a substantial discount.

Zenbit_UX··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Samsung made some folding phone which were pretty close to $3,000 on release IIRC. Pushing-the-envelope android phones can reach eye watering prices, and early adopters always pay up too. Personally I would rather wait for the 3-4th generation of anything THAT wild as the tech was very much not ready for launch.

Grains of sand getting into the hinge and mandatory factory-installed screen protectors are not things I want to deal with on a purchase that expensive.

The current folding generation launching this year (4th Gen) is likely to be the next big thing, rumors are huge price drop and likely a more polished experience as production is ramping up for more units.

Zenbit_UX··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Do y all have really small pockets or something? For women, I get it, your pants don't come with pockets and that sucks. But for guys? I've had a Samsung Note phone in my pocket since the Note 2, they where the model that invented the phablet moniker... Never had an issue. Do I just make better pant choices than most people?
Zenbit_UX··on When negotiating a price, never bid with a round number (2016)
I personally think it's rational to perceive a round number and a precise number differently. I suggest the problem isn't that we're all a bit irrational, but that we try to apply reason to an irrational process.
Zenbit_UX··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
The one person whose appearance John Oliver has made fun of more than any other is, John Oliver.

Aside from that, he punches up, politicians, celebreties and sometimes just random people, but always in playful manner. Hes quite fond of absurdist rants and comments, I find it thoroughly entertaining.

Zenbit_UX··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
> That is still racist, the same way it is racist if you prefer to only date people of a certain skin color.

That's not racists at all, that's just a person's personal preference for what they find attractive, and it often can't be helped.

We develop our models of what we find attractive early in our development by what we are exposed to.

It scares me a little that you don't know this, yet feel confident enough in your knowledge to type out these words.

Is it racist if I only like blonds? No, but that does rule out more than a few races of people that can't naturally grow blond hair. You're allowed to have physical preferences for certain traits. What you shouldn't do though is treat people differently because they don't have those traits that you value.

What would be racist is if I said I only hire [insert race], or I only let [insert race] people rent my condo.

Zenbit_UX··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
> It's wrong to deride a person based on skin color not because it hurts their feelings, but because our preconceived notions on their inferiority hold no objective basis in reality except those derived from our flawed social perceptions.

No... if that were true then it would be OK to deride someone who was born with a deformed limb, because in that case the "inferiority" would really have an "objective basis in reality". They would be objectively inferior at certain tasks then someone without it. Does that make it ok to insult them?

Suggesting racism (or prejudice) is wrong simply because it's not objectively inferior is missing the point.

The actual answer, which I think you would have come to eventually, is that deride someone for an attribute they had no control over, is the essence of prejudice.

People do not chose to be born in a poor country, in an abusive family, black, French, short or handicap, these are simply the hands they were dealt.
