ZekeSulastin··on People are happier in a walkable neighborhood: the US community that banned cars
Part of the implication is that your habits would change with different transportation - for example a fairly common response about groceries is buying them in smaller quantities every few days at the (likely smaller and/or more specialized) grocer convenient to your home or transit stop; renting a truck or cargo van to self move furniture as needed if you can’t get it professionally moved (which probably isn’t a bad idea even if you do primarily use a car!); renting a car for a road trip or being able to use transit to get there instead; that kind of thing.
ZekeSulastin··on People are happier in a walkable neighborhood: the US community that banned cars
That’s why you ideally have a city with a good public transportation schedule - it’s not like having a car makes your transit planning immune to external factors anyways.
ZekeSulastin··on USB inventor explains why the connector was not designed to be reversible (2019)
Apple is one of the companies that helped design USB-C and have been using it for everything except iPhones and AirPods for years now.
ZekeSulastin··on Eliminating radio interference from Apple charger
It’s amusing that you’re getting downvoted when that was the entire point of forcing Apple to standardize on USB-C like the rest of the electronics industry.
ZekeSulastin··on Review: Framework Laptop finally gets an AMD Ryzen config–and it’s pretty good
I mean, the entire reason the Asahi team are able to do what they do is because Apple isn’t stopping them at all (in the context of laptops/Mac Minis at least). It’s just that they’re not doing anything to help them except for maintaining the ability to boot a different OS.
ZekeSulastin··on Unity’s new pricing: A wake-up call on the importance of open source
I know Cruelty Squad was made in Godot, but I’m not sure it’s quite the best game to showcase general 3D FPS viability ;)
ZekeSulastin··on Unity’s new pricing: A wake-up call on the importance of open source
Yeah, 2,000 sold (~50,000 over the last year) out of ~3,200,000 still held, under a trading plan filed in May.
ZekeSulastin··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
I wonder if the base A16 simply doesn’t support USB 3 and they weren’t motivated to change that - the 14 Pro/Max last year was still limited to USB 2 after all.
ZekeSulastin··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
The same thing you did ten years ago when they got rid of the 30-pin cable?
ZekeSulastin··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
I imagine most people - especially those not using the Pro models - only care about universal charging. I think I’ve connected my iPhone to my PC for data transfer maybe two or three times since I switched ~six years ago, and even on Android I used network shares and such more often than not.
ZekeSulastin··on ChimeraOS: Instantly turn any PC into a gaming console
You’re not going to want to do much gaming with the nouveau driver vs the proprietary driver, and nouveau’s support for newer nvidia GPUs is limited.
ZekeSulastin··on Texas Power Prices to Surge 800% on Sunday Amid Searing Heat
I remember reading about the provider Griddy that did exactly that - gave customers the wholesale rate for power. Then the 2021 winter storms hit with the price peaking at the limit of $9 per kWh ...
ZekeSulastin··on Apple reports third quarter results
Haven’t read the release, but I imagine they’re referring to each component (i.e. iCloud, Music) as a separate subscription even if subbed to by the same user bundles notwithstanding.
ZekeSulastin··on Why Businesses Can’t Stop Asking for Tips
A bunch of places in the US have added additional percentage fees in lieu of raising their marked prices (someone in another thread mentioned an “employee wellness fee”, for instance).
ZekeSulastin··on More than 75% of Steam games tested are playable or verified on the Steam Deck
The easiest thing to do would be to just try it as long as your distro packages or otherwise manages the nvidia driver (which PopOS does). I don’t use desktop Linux anymore, but when I had a 2060 I dual-booted it with Arch (btw) and it worked fine except for the whole EGLStreams-instead-of-GBM-for-Wayland thing - and that’s since been resolved.
ZekeSulastin··on Why aren't black box flight recorders better?
It does exist, it has been approved by the FAA, and you can go buy the STC right now if you want[0]. The incentive is that 100LL has been banned by at least one county[1] with states[2] trying to follow (although the AOPA successfully neutered that one[3]).

ZekeSulastin··on I will never participate in weird internet caste systems
As noted in the post, Nitro users do get enhanced functionality for things like file upload sizes and streaming quality; I imagine that more intrusive better functionality than that would cause a much higher uproar than avatars or emoji, and given that this is a chat/voicechat/streaming app any functionality is necessarily going to be quite visible to other users.

ZekeSulastin··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
Reddit has an account setting to hide NSFW-marked content from your feed and search results, so people will mark “distressing” content NSFW as a crude opt-in.
ZekeSulastin··on Ars: “Book publishers with surging profits struggle to prove IA hurt sales”
I thought this whole lawsuit stemmed from the brief window of time where the IA removed that restriction.

ZekeSulastin··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
I thought GrapheneOS specifically drops support for devices once Google does - they even mention on their FAQ* that the Pixel 4/XL is only still getting releases as a stopgap for users until they can go buy a newer device.

ZekeSulastin··on U.S. credit card debt jumps 18.5% and hits a record $930.6B
(Beaten to it, woops) One of the major upsides of a credit card is that in the case of fraud, mischarge, etc your bank account isn’t affected while you get things sorted.

From what I understand many debit cards do have fraud protection of some sort but among other things it’s not instant so if the timing is bad…

ZekeSulastin··on South Korea’s online security dead end
They do support software tokens - I use that method - but it’s a bit of a pain[1] if you want to use a TOTP program other than Symantec :(

ZekeSulastin··on A Linux Evening
I kind of feel like there’s more replies that can be distilled down to “If you prefer anything over Linux for any reason you’re just dumb”, honestly.
ZekeSulastin··on Apple considering dropping requirement for iPhone web browsers to use WebKit
I thought a large part of the Chromium argument is that Google et al would be able to just put “use Chrome” banners on their site and provide a worse experience for other browsers.
ZekeSulastin··on Framework Laptop 2.5Gbps Ethernet Expansion Card
I know :) That was in response to “… this card can be used on any computer …”
ZekeSulastin··on Framework Laptop 2.5Gbps Ethernet Expansion Card
Physical compatibility aside, sticking a large rigid adapter supported only by the port into a laptop seems like a great way to damage the port and is still clunkier than a standard dongle with a cable.
ZekeSulastin··on It's time to upscale FSR 2 even further: Meet FSR 2.1
That isn’t a thing in DLSS 2.
