Zanfa··on Andrej Karpathy: Software in the era of AI [video]
> Human brain's aren't generalist!

What? Human intelligence is literally how AGI is defined. Brain’s physical configuration is irrelevant.

Zanfa··on Bitcoin Family etches keys onto metal cards on 4 continents after kidnappings
This makes no sense. It’ll just take him longer to pay the ransom once body parts of his family member start getting delivered.
Zanfa··on 'Spiderweb' drone attack marks a new threat for top militaries
I think Ukraine is already using mothership & hunter drones to target slow-flying drones (Shaheds and similar).

Very soon the most challenging part of anti-drone defence is going to be detection since fiber-guided drones can already fly tens of kilometers at low altitudes where they’ll be virtually undetectable with radar. You can literally fly them just above ground if necessary.

Zanfa··on Ukraine destroys more than 40 military aircraft in drone attack deep in Russia
There’s at least one other video where you can see the drones flying out one after the other, with like 10 second delay. Launching one at a time needs fewer pilots and has no risk of collisions that might set off a chain reaction. They’re clearly not in a hurry since who’s going to go near a truck full of high explosive drones anyway.
Zanfa··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
Even though Trump threw pretty much everybody from his previous administration under the bus, there was no shortage of new volunteers willing to take their chances.
Zanfa··on Stuff I Learned at Carta
Terrible people can be good at things, so their advice may be useful, but it still doesn't mean taking leadership advice from a terrible leader is a good idea. Maybe if he was blogging about how to fail upwards. It's more about separating the con from artist.
Zanfa··on Stuff I Learned at Carta
I never take any leadership-adjacent blog post seriously since I found out that by far the most toxic manager I’ve ever worked with in my career has apparently risen to a CTO position at a respectable startup and has since published numerous blog posts and a book on management. His resume looks amazing though.
Zanfa··on The metre originated in the French Revolution
You mean like my feet aren’t a foot long, my thumb isn’t an inch? Ironically, my pinky is a centimeter thick and a meter is when I take a long step.
Zanfa··on Russia's Pravda Network: AI-Driven Disinformation on a Global Scale
Russian disinformation network is truly all-encompassing, but it would be interesting to know how much of the "grassroots" part is knowing participants vs useful idiots. I still remember how many anti-vaxxers & COVID-deniers suddenly turned into pro-Russian / anti-Ukrainian influencers overnight when the full-scale Russian invasion started.
Zanfa··on Ukraine can move beyond its Soviet architectural legacy
> I grew up in a panel block, now live in a more recent building and my general impression is that while their build quality left much to be desired, I had no complaints about walkability. I could go to school, the clinic, the dentist or post office without crossing a road - only streets with heavily restricted traffic. Almost all parking spots were in a ring around my superblock.

Very few people had cars when these houses were built, so parking and car-friendliness wasn’t obviously a priority. With the number of cars these days we have major issues with parking and emergency service accessibility around commie blocks.

Zanfa··on Crypto has become the ultimate swamp asset
Whether they abuse their power is completely orthogonal to centralization. It’s also false. Just look at the amount of customer complaints in the Coinbase subreddit where they’ve blocked legitimate customer access.
Zanfa··on Crypto has become the ultimate swamp asset
> It prevents centralized entities being the gatekeepers to the modern financial world.

In theory, but it doesn’t in practice. Most crypto transfers never make it to the blockchain, they happen entirely in SQL databases of exchanges.

Also, Tether has complete control over USDT and can block or reverse any payment or freeze any account it wants. No bank or payment processor in the world has such centralized control over the traditional financial system.

If anything, crypto is more centralized by comparison. Both in terms of payment processors as well as wealth distribution.

Zanfa··on Push Ifs Up and Fors Down
Positive branch first is good advice when both branches are roughly even in terms of complexity. If the negative branch is just a return, I’d bail early instead.

Negative first makes else-branches double negative which reads weird, eg. if !userExists {…} else {…}

Zanfa··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
Problems like this always come down to salary. I love embedded (hardware in general, really) and would absolutely love to do it, but during my entire career, the salaries for embedded have been so much lower than you get for slinging JS/web shit. And now with 15 years in, the gap is even worse.

At this point, when I wanted to get back into hardware, it made more financial sense to outfit my home office with all the measuring instruments, debuggers, tools and other equipment necessary for embedded work and do it as a hobby. If I had the space, I could even get full-size CNC machines and still come out ahead cash wise. It’s insane.

It’s no wonder they can’t find experienced embedded devs, when it makes no financial sense to stick with it over a decade.

Zanfa··on How three years at McKinsey shaped my second startup
That’s not how LLMs work.
Zanfa··on How three years at McKinsey shaped my second startup
Why wouldn't they be? LLMs need a lot of content for training and there's multiple orders of magnitude less to train on of if you limited it to insurance-specific content, so you'd probably get a really crappy LLM. And training from scratch is really expensive anyway.

At best they'll be using fine tuned enterprise OpenAI / Anthropic models, more likely a regular model with a custom prompt.

Zanfa··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
So let them eat cake?
Zanfa··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
Agree, the new code viewer is horrid. Also breaks right-click navigation between files for no reason. Not once have I triggered the interactive editor mode on purpose, but happens all the time accidentally, trying to select / hightlight a line. So frustrating…
Zanfa··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
If Shopify or Github can handle scale with Rails, maybe it’s not a framework problem.
Zanfa··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
Giving an existing Rails codebase to an LLM and effectively asking it to rewrite it in Go is going to result in a shitstorm of epic proportions.

At least it’ll make for an interesting post mortem blog post.

Zanfa··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
None of what you described requires anything more than an isolated island with some extra JS. No need for complex client-side state, no need for a SPA framework, no bundling required, not even TypeScript. If you relied on DOM and a couple of hidden fields, 90% of this would be a few dozen lines of code plus some JSDoc for type safety.
Zanfa··on AI suggestions make writing more generic, Western

Zanfa··on Generative AI is not replacing jobs or hurting wages at all, say economists
Basically any product comparison or review for example.
Zanfa··on Generative AI is not replacing jobs or hurting wages at all, say economists
> The "Google's search is garbage" paradigm is starting to get outdated

Quite the opposite. It's never been more true. I'm not saying using LLMs for search is better, but as it stands right now, SEO spammers have beat Google, since whatever you search for, the majority of results are AI slop.

Their increased revenue probably comes down to the fact that they no longer show any search results in the first screenful at all for mobile and they've worked hard to make ads indistinguishable from real results at a quick glance for the average user. And it's not like there exists a better alternative. Search in general sucks due to SEO.

Zanfa··on Generative AI is not replacing jobs or hurting wages at all, say economists
Google Search is distinct from Google's expansive ad network. Google search is now garbage, but their ads are everywhere are more profitable than ever.
Zanfa··on Duolingo will replace contract workers with AI
> AI-first might win on cost and speed. But will it still win on outcomes?

It will be a flop. Either it won't get implemented like the C-levels dreamed in the first place and will remain policy on paper only or it will be rolled back quietly once reality hits.

"AI-first" is the "blockchain" of 2025.

Zanfa··on Amazon Japan ordered to pay 35M. yen for allowing listing of fakes
Not GP, but yeah, more frequent fines, e.g $250k USD per fake listing would likely motivate Amazon to do something about it.
Zanfa··on Swift Container Plugin
The main problem with TS is that your types are compile-time. You can have 0 uses of any/unknown, but you can still stuff a number into a string at runtime without any issues until it blows up.

I know you should have defined validators for every single external API, library and database, but at some level it feels silly to do all of this extra work.
