Yujf··on Meta to charge for ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe
You show a small banner on the page, with 3 options: accept, reject optional and configure. Configure explains each thing and lets the user opt in to specific things. It is quite simple really.

And if you only track necessary information, you do not need a banner at all

Yujf··on YouTube's Anti-Adblock and uBlock Origin
But the population that blocks (opt-out) telemetry is likely low, at least that is what I would assume. So I don't think it makes a big impact
Yujf··on Wait, what's a bookmarklet?
I use an extension that lets me quickly jump to bookmarks and have a bunch of yt speed bookmarklets (named 1.25x, 1x, 2x etc) and it is so nice to quickly change playback speed with the keyboard
Yujf··on DRM-free e-books are a big deal (2019)
Calibre DRM busting is great. It is also what I do when adding any ebook to my library.
Yujf··on We are not sustainable
"Optimize" as though most end user software is optimised. It is just written without much thought for perfomance most of the time
Yujf··on uBlock-Origin – 1.52.0
If you rely on default config uBO just works, but if you go furthur in blocking things (or add third party filters) tinkering may be required for certain webpages (or a lot depending on how hard you go)
Yujf··on uBlock-Origin – 1.52.0
With that display you can totally block or allow (sub-)domains on the current website (or all websites) so it does have some power, but it is not as powerful as the the scripts which allow much more granularity
Yujf··on Housewives Are One Surprising Solution to “Millennial Burnout”
How is it not liberating to not be dependant on another human being for everything?
Yujf··on Bicyclists Deserve the Right to Free Movement
The point is that the bikers that decide to use it are safe. That it can encourage more bikers and take cars off the road. The fact that some bikers so not use it does not invalidate the usefullnes of a bikelane
Yujf··on ProtonMail Rewrites Your Emails
They do e2e to other skiff users, but given that the majority of your mail probably goes to none skiff users, what are you gaining?
Yujf··on A Senior Engineer’s Guide to FAANG Interviews
I don't think this is necessarily true. Big chaos score means that the hiring manager is basically free to hire whoever they want with no verification, but that does not mean that they do not keep their engineers in check. Google has low chaos score, but you can essentially get hired without a job that you should do so that could also indicate you may get away with doing not a lot of work
Yujf··on The 'fuck you' pattern (2021)
You don't have to change the world, but if no one tries to change things that are bad, they will not change.

So don't have a defeatist attitude all the time, but once in a while try to actually have an impact. We will all be much better for it.

Yujf··on Ask HN: Refusing all cookies, still targeted by ads. How?
GDPR
Yujf··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
No, if reddit does that they lose a giant amount of traffic. And reddit search sucks they should improve it first if they want that. But also for many things you do not necessarily search for reddit but just search a question and reddit turns up in search results. If that goes away, reddit will have less visits and become way less usefull for many things
Yujf··on PostgreSQL reconsiders its process-based model
yes
Yujf··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
Ah I see. Thanks for the link that clears everything up.
Yujf··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
I still won't entirely understand where Appolo's 20Million figure comes from.

As far as I understand all the outrage is because of what the Appolo dev published, but reddit seems to claim that even for third party apps they get 100 queries per minute per user which seems like it would be enough? Whay is Appolo doing that this is not enough or what am i misunderstanding about 100 queries per Oauth client?

Yujf··on EU suggests breaking up Google's ad business in preliminary antitrust ruling
The web version is completely inferior though
Yujf··on EU suggests breaking up Google's ad business in preliminary antitrust ruling
The commenter explains why that is and instead of reacting to his argument you are implying that it is just Europens who want to regulzte Americans while it is clearly not the case.

Not every monopoly is created equal and if you can not acknowledge that you are not arguing in good faith.

Edit: also I am looking into De Beers a bit more and it seems the EU has made steps to improve competition in the past.

Also if you want to argue that LVMH is a monopoly and that it has a bad impact, go ahead. I just think that since this is HN it is natural that most people do not feel the impact and do not really care. I do not know exactly how monopolistic they are and what the bad impact of that is but feel free to enlighten me.

I agree they should be forced to offer office on Linux. It is one of the things that really keeps Linux down for normal people.

Why should they not be able to offer ads in their own products though? I don't like ads but I do not immediataly see the issue. I think they should absolutly be allowed to do AI but things like only allowing bing chat in Edge should be banned. The amount of pushing they do is clearly not OK. And same for google they should not be allowed to push chrome on you when you go to gmail or google in a non chrome browser

Yujf··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Problem is that NSFW is used as a general content warning not just for porn. So if all NSFW content is blocked you lose a lot of non porn content too
Yujf··on Apple's game porting toolkit is fantastic. Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra on an M1 MBP
Do they need to most powerfull gaming hardware? Maybe just the fact that it might get reasonable to play most games on a macbook is enough to get people who also want to game to buy a macbook instead of a windows laptop. And maybe this is enough to get developers to consider mac.

They do not need to compete with nvidea for the top of the line

Yujf··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
Very usefull. Many people live outside the city centers (which are very small in Belgium) and use cars to commute.

Public transport is relatively good within a city, but if you come from outside the city it can get really bad. 20 min by car can be 1 hour by bus for example.

Yujf··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
Yup, so Belgium has a lot of weird things like that, but it's really hard to take it away since it's such an important part of salary for many people and taxation is really high so most people are very opposed to losing benefits like this.
Yujf··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
Yeah healthcare is for sure better in EU and so less of a benefit, but I still get additional insurance through my company and most white collar jobs do. It's for the extra costs of hospitalisation such as upcharges for a single room and other costs general health care doesn't cover.
Yujf··on ARM’s Cortex A53: Tiny but Important
Competition. Multiple vendors can compete with RISC-V while ARM can prevent all competition with licenses, if it really will happen is a different case, but I'm optimistic about the potential.
Yujf··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
I don't know "the american sense", but benfits are definetely a thing in Belgium. I think like 60+% of engineers get company cars.
Yujf··on Meta fined $1.3B over data transfers to U.S.
Yes the fine should be based on global revenue, but when discussing if this fine actually hurts Meta, you should try to estimate the EU revenue, because it is about if it Meta cares about the fine. If it is a significant part of EU revenue then Meta should want to comply or leave the EU. If it is not then Meta doesn't care.
Yujf··on Ask HN: How does archive.is bypass paywalls?
I don't know about archive.is, but 12ft.io does identify as google to bypass paywalls afaik
Yujf··on Meta fined $1.3B over data transfers to U.S.
Reminder that this is revenue, not profit AND it is a fine from the EU so really only EU revenue should be counted when discussing how hard this hits Meta.
