Yujf··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
And charges for all apps on all marketplaces
Yujf··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
That is fine as an app store policy, but they also want to impose those requirements for apps outside the appstore. That is a problem, if I want to run a sketchy browser downloaded from github apple should not be able to prevent this
Yujf··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
It is not per update and the most significant thing is that it is also for apps that get distributed outside the app store. Which is the real issue and that is definitely insane
Yujf··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
Yes, I think so.

So apple wants to require they approve your app and then charge you €0,5 for every time it is installed for the privilege of avoiding using their infrastructure. It is honestly insane. I don't know the DMA in detail but I hope it is not and gets smacked with fines. And I hope if this is allowed the DMA gets updated so this is no longer allowed.

Yujf··on Zed, a collaborative code editor, is now open source
The CLA does not prevent future closed-sourcing sadly
Yujf··on Are electric vehicles cheaper to own? Maybe not
The air quality is what I mostly look forward to. I bike 10km 1 way on my commute and it would be so much more enjoyable if the air quality was better.
Yujf··on Meta now lets EU users unlink their Facebook, Messenger and Instagram accounts
It is not the activists fault that the company wants to track you. They do not have to show you that stuff if they don't so unnecessary tracking
Yujf··on Why is everything so ugly?
Are they? Something about them seems off to me, but I cant put my finger on it
Yujf··on C23: A Slightly Better C
Also not stable, will change a lot afaik
Yujf··on The bane of my existence: Supporting both async and sync code in Rust
What does this have to do with the article? The problem is for libraries: they want to support both sync and async use cases, without having to think about think about it, so that the user of the library can decide what is right for them.
Yujf··on Samsung extends Android and security updates to 7 years
But you would also be stuck with a $170 phone, which depending on how you use the thing can be a slight inconvenience or a total disaster.
Yujf··on WhatsApp Is Booming in the U.S.
Except it is very different. If you use react you are not contributing to the sweatshop, while if you buy sweatshop items you are.

I think what you are saying is that it would be immoral to make generic medicine based based on q design that was originally invented by a big pahrma company because you are supporting the exploitation fo sick people, which is honestly compeletly absurd

Yujf··on WhatsApp Is Booming in the U.S.
So what? Meta does employ many talented engineers and they do create valuable open source software. Is it not good that we can praise that and still hate other practices they use?
Yujf··on IAC sold 17 apps to Bending Spoons. $100M deal, all 330 employees fired
It is tricky, as was explained in the comment you replied to. Maybe you could explain how it is not tricky instead of just making random statements without contributing anything
Yujf··on Meta unlawfully ignores the users' right to easily withdraw consent: complaint
There are things you can't put in food even though you can choose not to eat it.

Individual action does not work for some issues. This is one of them.

Tracking is everywhere. It is not just facebook. It is every website and there is no realistic alternative as an individual user except be excluded from majority of the internet.

Yujf··on In Europe, trains are full, and more are on the way
A plane flies faster so you can amortize the cost over more flights. A plane only requires 2 airports, which can be used as a starting point to connect with any other airport again amortizing the cost over many flights. For trains you need rail all the way, which is not flexible and costs a lot.

Then the planes don't pay their full cost as they emit a lot of CO2 but aviation fuel is not taxed so you get planes that already have quite a lot of structural advantages getting even cheaper.

Budget airlines are probably also run a lot more efficiently than most train systems

Yujf··on Are roads the biggest driver of ecological destruction?
Except sometimes we do want to. It is easy to blame the government and they certainly do not always follow the will of the people, but acting like people are never supportive of war is dishonest.
Yujf··on Show HN: FrameOS – operating system for single function smart frames
I suppose I should be lamenting the state of the web as a whole but it really does not feel nice to visit a website of a very cool product and see things like https://shop.invisible-computers.com/pages/ccpa-opt-out.

Do you really have no way of opting users out by default if you want to use fb advertising?

Yujf··on Show HN: FrameOS – operating system for single function smart frames
No there should not be a cookie banner. Just do not collect any information from the website that is not necessary. You are selling a product, not hosting a free website, there is absolutely no reason my information should be shared for advertising with any third party.

But yeah if you want to keep that shit in than you should put a cookie banner and make everyone annoyed at you.

That privacy policy... at least it is honest and upfront about it
Yujf··on Why should I use Go over Rust, Java, or Python?
People acting like there is a language for a problem are honestly delusional. Most problems can be solved in most languages, which is why they are called general purpose languages, so you have to make a choice somehow.
Yujf··on Say Goodbye to "Forever Chemicals"
You need DWR because if your jacket gets soaked on the outside, your sweat will no longer evaporate through the jacket.
Yujf··on Welcome to the ad-free internet
It is illegal to offer an ad supported version that has no way to turn off personalized ads.

Its the good old "in a gold rush, sell shovels"
Yujf··on EU strikes deal to regulate ChatGPT, AI tech
Regulators are being slow, but with GDPR you can also not maliciously comply. You can get fined for that and slowly regulators are starting to so that
Yujf··on EU strikes deal to regulate ChatGPT, AI tech
Nokia hasnt even been bought by US companies. It sold a branch that was unsuccesfull and after it was bought it was still not successfull and they have the rights back. People are just ignorant about so many things and claim it is EU regulations that are the problem but that is a very simplistic view that just goes to show they are not interested in actually looking into what is going on and why
Yujf··on What Is L4S?
The idea is that there should not really be a trade-off. If you manage congestion well, you can send just what the network will allow, keeping throughput high but lowering latency. It could even increase throughput as you do not have the default TCP congestion algorithm which drops it's rate after dropped packets meaning it does not dully utilize the link
Yujf··on Ask HN: Article on software only increasing complexity?
No problem, I actually hadn't read it myself but was intrigued enough to go looking. Worth it!
Yujf··on Ask HN: How can my mom downshift as a SQL developer?
Coasting is entirely realistic. There are still many jobs that require knowledge that has been releatively stable, that are not stressful. And it is perfectly fine to want them id you realise pay is going to be less than you could get in other positions. You are just being an asshole.
