Yeroc··on “Please let me know if I should stop developing apps for Google Products”
It's not clear how a willingness for the end-users to pay $3-5 monthly would help the situation given that he can't use $$ to increase his quota-controlled access to the api.
Yeroc··on Why don't MacBooks come with cellular networking?
I can't say I care much about having cellular networking in my MacBook but what I want to know is why they're still being sold with internal DVD drives and no hybrid SSD/HDD drive combination. Apple doesn't sell a laptop with a SSD large enough to fit my photos/video clips so my only option is a relatively slow HDD. They should be offering the best of both worlds by providing a combination of the two. Other PC manufacturers are doing this but not Apple. Somehow Apple seems to be fixated on display and battery technology and is failing to address storage issues and appear to be just waiting for SSD prices to fall. All I can say is it's not happening quickly enough...
Yeroc··on Why are there no true cross-platform filesystems?
I think a lot of people would contend exFAT is NOT a great option by virtue of the fact that Microsoft holds patents on the filesystem and has (in the past) enforced those patents. So it's pretty unlikely that it's ever going to have great support on Linux.
Yeroc··on One way to fix your rubbish password database
Unless I missed something you're describing exactly what the linked article suggested to do.
Yeroc··on Three things you should never put in your database
If you're talking about Postgres most people would likely implement this using date/time-based partitioning which provides a more seamless solution to this problem.
Yeroc··on Tuning JVM for a VM - Lessons Learned, Directly from VMware
Azul Systems has been marketing a different solution to this same problem in the Zing VMs for some time now. I believe their solution is based on adding extra APIs to the underlying kernel etc. so the JVM's heap isn't so opaque to the OS/hypervisor.

The VMWare solution sounds like a simpler, pragmatic "hack" to solve the problem. It would be interesting to hear from someone that has used both technologies to see how they compare in practice.

Yeroc··on Indian Government uses special powers to slash cancer drug price by 97%
Keep in mind that the government did NOT force Bayer to manufacture the drug, only to license it. I don't believe Bayer had any interest in pursuing the Indian market whatsoever since it was priced well beyond what the average person could afford.

On the question of fairness: Is it fair for people to die because they can't afford a life-saving drug? I'm sure that's what it boiled down to for the Indian government.

According to my math if Bayer priced the drug over here the same way they did in India relative to average per-capita income the drug would cost around $1.5 million per year. Would that change your perspective?

Yeroc··on Indian Government uses special powers to slash cancer drug price by 97%
The really simple argument is that at the previous price very, very few people in India could afford it. So in the end it is more than likely that the revenue that is gained is higher than it would have been at the very high price.
Yeroc··on Texts Editor - True WYSIWYG Markdown
You mention using it to author books. Is there a plan to make support exporting to epub/mobi formats then?
Yeroc··on True Scala complexity
You must be one of those lucky people that only write new code all the time and never have to maintain code written by someone else. For the rest of us poor suckers who have to do a mix of writing new code and maintaining existing code bases written by other sadistic (!) developers then it's a very valid concern.
Yeroc··on Eclipse launches new language to cut down Java boilerplate - Extend
I'm surprised there's been no mention of Lombok (http://projectlombok.org/) since the goals seem to be the same. Lombok of course, is not a language but just a set of annotions and annotation processors to handle the code generation behind the scenes. Will have to look at this more closely to see how the two compare...
Yeroc··on Everything I Ever Learned About JVM Performance Tuning At Twitter
I really don't think you can equate tuning the JVM to writing/debugging C and C++ memory management. Tuning the JVM doesn't require wizardry. It requires some attention to detail and careful monitoring but most of what you need to know were shared in these slides. There are also a few whitepapers out there on the subject that are pretty readable. I hardly think changing a few command line arguments on the JVM, using jvisualvm to monitor or -verbosegc etc. are anywhere near as difficult as actually implementing your own memory management system.
Yeroc··on Lost skills: What today's coders don't know and why it matters
I'm curious why you'd choose an algorithm that on average takes O(n log n) comparisons with a O(n^2) worst case versus simply iterating O(n)?

Unless there are other requirements I don't see why you'd suggest sorting the elements.

Yeroc··on Realtime Search: Solr vs Elasticsearch
FYI, LinkedIn open-sourced the work they did to build real-time indexing/search on top of Lucene. It's called Zoie (http://javasoze.github.com/zoie/), I've played with it and it's nice from a performance point of view...
Yeroc··on Why Engineers Don't Write Recipe Books
I do think that a proper engineer would use weight measurements (grams) in most cases (with the exception of liquids) rather than less accurate volume measurements.
Yeroc··on Show HN: Our new $149 hackable Bluetooth wristwatch
I didn't see this anywhere on your website: is the watch water-resistant? I know you're focused on the programmable aspects of the watch but to me this is important information.
Yeroc··on Big Just Got Bigger - 5 Terabyte Object Support in Amazon S3
How long before the AWS division is spun off as it's own independent company?
Yeroc··on The Death Of RIM
Sure, but if you're a personal user using BIS the email experience on the BB is pretty poor compared to the other phones out there today. With BIS connecting to IMAP it doesn't actually do a two-way sync so if I read and delete an email on my BB it isn't reflected when I get home and check my mail on my laptop. Total fail. All because they're trying to push BES server licenses onto people. I think it's actually this pig-headedness that will kill them in the end. In fact, they're too focused on extracting BES money out of businesses to properly address personal IMAP/POP mail properly.
Yeroc··on Lisp has too many parentheses...
And machine code printed in binary is all 1's & 0's. What could be more elegant than that?
