Yadi··on Ask HN: How often does technical debt lead to the failure of a startup?
Thanks, I agree there are a lot of factors for a startup to fail.

Thought in the context that I mentioned, it is about some startups that have surpassed the point to find their first thousands of customer and now they need reliability.

But again there are different interesting tradeoffs of these issues.

Regarding:

> Another example is Instagram, I read recently (but can't find the link) that the founders were learning to code when they built it, and that some of that code is still in production, and apparently, it's embarassingly bad, but it gets the job done.

I was at the OpenAir conference this year where Mike Krieger mentioned the above story. But I'm not sure if the Video is out.

Yadi··on Ask HN: What equivalents of Erlang/OTP exist for other languages?
Thanks a bunch!
Yadi··on Ask HN: What equivalents of Erlang/OTP exist for other languages?
Indeed, thanks!

One quick question:

Aside of the docs, any suggestions for learning on further Celluloid & Ruby /actor based patterns?

Yadi··on Ask HN: What equivalents of Erlang/OTP exist for other languages?
Do you know why this comment is awesome? I've used celluloid for so long with Ruby.

But recently I've been trying to understand OTP/Erl and I'v had no luck.

Now seeing these two as an alternative makes a lot of sense for diff langs.

Yadi··on Now that we have IPv6 – do we need TCP/UDP port numbers anymore?
This is the perfect response!

Much like a CCNA review from a few years ago :) Thanks.

Yadi··on Ask HN: What are you using for system architecture diagraming?
Looks pretty neat!

Any plans to move it to mobile for touch surfaces?

Yadi··on Ask HN: What are you using for system architecture diagraming?
Big white papers are the best! I love sketching it out a few times, and throw some of them.

Until it reaches a diagram that I would actually like, then I will transform it to this FREE googleDrive tool called (draw.io).

Yadi··on Ask HN: Which functional programming language is the popular enterprise choice?
Yup! I did a research while ago (end of 2014). Scala was by far the most used among the other choices (Clojure,Haskell,F#).
Yadi··on Ask HN: Which functional programming language is the popular enterprise choice?
I was like wait what...Then I saw your comment.

Yup Pretty much same reaction to that suggestion.

Yadi··on A Walk Around Chernobyl [video]
I learned all about Chernobyl from the video game Call Of Duty: Modern Warefare. It's tragic and sad!

There are some villages in North Iraq where it's similar to this, due to the chemical bombing. It's gives tou shivers just knowing that a town use to be a normal day to day living place and now just a ghost town.

Yadi··on Show HN: Free Company Logo API
Brilliant, this is helpful for building MVP products as well!
Yadi··on Ask HN: My startup has failed. What comes next?
These are my two different experiences and hopefully one of them might help you.

My first startup didn't go that badly, which is why it left me with enough cash for rainy day during my 2nd / 3rd startup.

So without saying, yes the 2nd and 3rd crashed n burnt pretty badly.

Experience after 2nd:

I know this might sound meta, but your sanity and your self worth more than anything else and that's what you should be looking at. I was a noob by all means when I did my 2nd startup, because my first startup had an early acquisition which I didn't really go through a lot of things. So due to that my 2nd time it left me with a lot of bruises of rookie mistakes.

It was awful, but I decided take school and help me forget about Startups, business and the sorts of things I was obsessed was before. So this helped because I got to talk to people whom were not necessarily talking startup and business, which diverts your anger/disappointment towards something different.

After 3rd startup:(run out of money, quite literally)

After my 2nd startup I had enough cash to not get a job, but this time around I had a lot more pressure which left me with no choice, but getting a job. I had some great investors whom knew why I fall into this situation, which helped a lot.

Few things I did:

1- I put behind everything I was hopping for before, because I knew that I have reached a new low (which is not good).

2- Making new hopes!

3- I started fresh (joined a tiny startup and worked for them like it was my first ever time programming / building a team).

Things learned:

1- I wouldn't jump into another startup of your own. (don't, just don't) The pressure becomes too much and productivity tanks.

2- Make sure you agree on leaving behind the miseries of a startup to start something new (aka joining a team). It's a good time to let go of things when you feel your shoulder is holding too much.

3- Your sanity and your life is the most precious thing you have, after my 3rd startup I had death threats and that was the reason I had to let it go. So things like that shows you how cheap life can be in others eyes, while for you, that is the biggest asset you have your control over.

So feeling shitty or guilt shouldn't stop you from going into something new.

Also, if you have enough of experience with programming and building, then you can do some consulting or freelancing very easily.

PS: if you're in based States don't freaking try Elance or Odesk. Because that will just destroy your thoughts more, it's like race to the bottom for prices. Try using HN (Who is Hiring) or Reddit /r/forhire or Twitter or friends to get some gig.

Ah and one last thing, ego and pride can be hard to get over, but don't bury them, because these times will be your medal of honor and soon enough you can feel proud of them.

Yadi··on Tell HN: These are some of my favorite talks for software engineers to watch
Awesome! Thanks, I will definitely check them out.
Yadi··on Ask Me Anything: Dynamic Memory Networks for Natural Language Processing
Such an interesting paper that I came across just now from a tweet.

Are there any other papers around DMN for Q&A, or particularly other use cases of DMN?

Yadi··on 21 year old makes 12k/day selling CS:GO skins
Oh, that is interesting!

And yes, it's pretty cool tying a part of that virtual world to real money in this way.

Yadi··on Ask HN: What are some good books to read as a developer?
This is about the fundamentals of HTTP, most of the changes are based on these fundamentals.
Yadi··on Ask HN: What are some good books to read as a developer?
I would recommend you to look into this book: HTTP: The Definitive Guide

As a web developer understanding how the Internet stack and some specific protocols work, could very easily make your life easier.

Yadi··on 21 year old makes 12k/day selling CS:GO skins
Kudos, though as Flammy pointed out, this could become very obscure sort of niche if the game changes something or decides to move some option around.

I had a few friends on this game called APB (All Points Bullet In), These guys were making legit money selling MOD cars, guns and tattoo designs.

However, in their case, they became an actual known group that some of their design and tattoo's were sold outside of the game.

No VC money, no nothing, just a few 17 years olds from Chicago and Poland making around 5k each in a month to create this whole design entity for unique products. + Their YouTube channel doing videos tutorials for the game.

I can't really link to them or anything, due to some of their restrictions, but that's just another way similar to this person doing the CS:GO thing and turning it into a business.

Yadi··on Model-Based Machine Learning
My first introduction to Machine Learning was C. Bishop's book!

So this book must be awesome and I also have been looking around to find more on model-based ML stuff to read.

I guess this is a part of the 2013 Microsoft Research[1] paper

Yadi··on Ask HN: What are some frequent questions your non-technical team members ask?
Haha, I get those as well! Thanks!
Yadi··on Slashdot Burying Stories About SlashdotMedia Owned SourceForge
That's interesting, I didn't know about their relation to SourceForge. But I guess every one of those giant sites would have a Digg moment if not really well taken care of.

I remember the first time when Slashdot was suggested to me by my professor teaching OS 304. (5 years ago)

Yadi··on Tell HN: Thank you whoishiring, a.k.a. Matthew Walsh-Cloonagh
I''ve never applied to through his posts, but I've to say it's pretty awesome am sure lots of great candidates can come through those posts he have posted in the past.

Kudos on volunteering my hard working internet friend.

Yadi··on Mattermark Engineering: The Path Forward
This is super awesome!

The data mining part is the most fun part I'd say!

Yadi··on Ask HN: Do pure math grads make better software engineers than CS grads?
I think one can become a better software engineer only by working your way up to be better in software engineering.

Doesn't matter that much (to a certain degree) if you are the CS Master, Math Wiz or the Alchemist, you have to program, program and program to become a better software engineer.

It's true that studying CS will give you the privilege of understanding some pretty darn complicated concepts that you wouldn't actually read in your free time.

And the same for studying Math, picking up all the good logic and proper way of writing your algorithms.

But again, the only way to become a better software engineer is to do software engineering.

Yadi··on Show HN: Finally, a table for your online meetings.
This looks pretty cool!

It's one of those things where I'm like, Ah why didn't I not think of that :D!

Yadi··on Leaving Stripe
Congrats Greg, You ROCK! time to start a new chapter!

The codebase you have contributed to (built), is just incredible.

Yadi··on Ask HN: I'm considering trying a 4-day work week. How has it worked out for you?
I actually do T,W,Th or last 3 days of the week.

It helps with my clients to do their other work in the start of the week.

Yadi··on Ask HN: I'm considering trying a 4-day work week. How has it worked out for you?
I'm doing 3 days of the week work, and the rest of the week working out of office if I needed to.

It's working pretty well for me, but it needs a lot of self discipline and self indulgence to keep things in place hah!

Specially if you are doing some sort of consulting it could work well.

Yadi··on Prime Minister of Singapore Coded Sudoku Solver in C++
This guy is such an inspiration. Perhaps a different side of Politics. Well at least from where I come from originally.

He wants to build a data marketplace, invest in tech R&D )since 2010). OH and he also programs in Haskell.

I mean this is amazing how he have dedicated so much for this topic.

Yadi··on DevPort – Portfolios for Developers
Looks cool, I think it just went down though, I'm not sure but this link wasn't working
