X4··on The $200 Billion Rip-Off: Our broadband future was stolen (2007)
I never said that QT is a really available commercial technology. Look I wrote:

>> … firstly because "Quantum Teleportation (QT)" is available soon enough for a broader audience than just Physicists …

Look up: doi:10.1038/492022a if you don't believe in QT. Then I'm glad to see your arguments on that.

>> I would like a cite for your bandwidth claim

Here you go 10-Gbit/s vs 1-Tbit/s → doi:10.1038/nphoton.2012.138 if you need other details on encodings: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1208.2891v2.pdf and http://arxiv.org/pdf/1304.0709.pdf

You mention latency, I know about that and I was not sure if I should've mentioned it, or not, but decided not to. That's because I thought you would know from my writing that I know about latency pretty well.. However, you know that the topology of a system defines if, a system is as strong as it's weakest link. Because I don't know how the latency in the given wireless system is, I can tell you that.

Oh man.. Can't I say anything on HN without having a scientific proof, or what? holy moly... What am I, everyone's slave? Do yourself a favor, just ask politely next time and I will do that, when time allows. But accusing somebody of being a bullshitter, without having any proof yourself, except that your work on HFT stuff is creating an "unfriendly" atmosphere. If being right matters more for you than being helpful, then that's your problem, but it doesn't help to improve the atmosphere in here. And sorry, if you feel attacked or something in any way, it's absolutely not my intention to do that.

Oh great and microwaves are what, not wireless? C'mon please read what people write before you blindly accuse someone of being wrong. I wrote wireless NOT WiFi! But you know what, I'll still give you a free +1, because you tried to help.

» completely unable of transmitting data...

Flat out wrong.

Yes the references supplied were bad, I didn't bother looking deep enough for a good reference. I don't care if you believe that it's science fiction or comic science, it's there and the race to commercialization has already started. If you really care about what you say, then you should read this and stop being a naysayer: doi:10.1038/492022a

X4··on The $200 Billion Rip-Off: Our broadband future was stolen (2007)
@pjc50 Thank you for your input, really appreciated. What you say is that proximity gives you more benefit than having antennas transmitting data 'wireless', right? I agree with that and I don't, firstly because "Quantum Teleportation (QT)" is available soon enough for a broader audience than just Physicists [1] and such "directed antennas" positioned in the same proximity to the datacenter as the 10G links can result in equal or higher bandwidth. Otherwise it's an unfair comparison. Also QT is making rounds in the defense and aerospace industry now much more than ever, because they could use it to send data to satellites much faster than with earlier methods.

Please correct me, if I'm wrong, but I'd be grateful, if you had a source for your argument. :)

TL;DR: » If you're not in the same datacenter you're too slow; That applies to wireless and for cable.

By the way, what's your job title, if I may ask?

>> WiFi is slow though, I just want a lan box.

hahahaha :D

OK, dear anon4, do you have idea what the fastest connection to the stock market today is, no? Hint, it's "wireless". High Frequency Trading set an arms race to have the best and fastest connection to the trade-market. Every nanosecond counts.

TL;DR?

Wireless is faster than Cable. Yup.

X4··on New algorithm can dramatically streamline solutions to the ‘max flow’ problem
that's cool! I've not seen any use of a SDD, what do you intent to use this for, or could you tell how it could be used?

Yes. Downloaded that too. Here is more: http://math.mit.edu/~kelner/publications.html

I cant wait to see the C99 code for that! (maybe I should try that myself)

>> Real story: I hated when I found out that I got presumably 2x more than other people and weren't allowed to tell them contractually. What I found out was that it was a lie and that some pet or favorite employees later or earlier got the same amount as I did. I don't like unfair payments even when I win! There are alternatives way of payment, like self-chosen salaries and collective efficiency based correction, but I don't know how such things are solved on a social level without causing anger and hatred. For example, I have a "friend", who is such a lazy ass, he would consider him smart for doing only what's necessary to get things done without doing actual work. That means finding ways to apply pre-made solution etc. and he hustles at every single job that you may have heard about. Yes he makes themes, IT-Stuff, changes your tires, washes your car, sells stuff on local classifieds ads, sets up stuff at events, works on your mc donalds and more. What would you do about such people? That guy would choose the highest possible salary for himself, his salary would get corrected by the employees based on performance, well if he doesn't try to social engineer his way up. You see, it's hard. I don't know a solution to fair payments to be honest. Do you?

Try http://getkirby.com or http://concrete5.org or http://silverstripe.org there are many many other CMS or Blogging platforms too. For just Blogging as the main thing, you're perfectly set with https://ghost.org/

Without exaggerating, I've downloaded almost any CMS on Github and Bitbucket and Sourceforge and I'm almost done with testing all of them. I think about 15 remain. With all honesty, I cannot say that I'm impressed with any CMS so far. There is just one thing that stood out, with it's concept, but it's still only Alpha grade quality, that's: http://parsimony.mobi/

I've you're curious what I ended up with, just ping me and I'll share my results, after I've really compared all CMS with each other. Currently I would say that there are about ~10 good quality CMS, with hundreds of miserably coded ones. That is a good benchmark, for how good developers are in the real world, I mean there is only so much space at the top of the iceberg. Not everybody can excel with every project they start (well, except people like Fabrice Bellard)

I've not compared Typo3, Alfresco and other Enterprise CMS, because even when they come with all features loaded, they suck at code complexity and user friendliness

You can't tell me that Wordpress is the only blogging platform that fits to all of your requirements, because there are thousands of CMS out there and you'll spend weeks testing all of them.

X4··on Ask HN: What's your speciality, and what's your "FizzBuzz" equivalent?
These are questions I remember being asked. But they also asked what experience with servers I have and stuff..

     * At which layer things are in the OSI model.

     * How to reset AD user passwords.

     * What different kinds of servers are for.

     * Access port 25 in VLAN1 but not VLAN2 using port forwarding in the firewall

      * What ways of securing a DMZ are available in emergencies.

>> to a recent version of Wordpress

Saying recent here isn't logical, because after patching the incident, it's not an incident anymore. But I guess you mean how secure you are with a recent version of Wordpress. I think this is though question, because Wordpress relies to a high degree on external components and plugins. There is probably no single pure Wordpress Blog, because the original Wordpress archive already relies heavily on external dependencies. That's where many of the issues were found as correctly pointed out by wyck. However this reliance on external code, without a Wordpress team or at least a software that is evaluating the code-quality or any other metric, you can't be secure. Yeah we can argue with: "But Wordpress is n-times more popular than X." However it still makes WP very vulnerable to attacks. I've cleaned and recovered some hacked commercial wp blogs and shops myself (not installed by me, but the previous dev). So whatever you believe in WP may be, just get over it. There are so many other opensource alternatives that wait for you to be tried out.

X4··on Backdoor found in Linksys, Netgear Routers
I agree, there are also some laws that force ISPs to do things they don't feel comfortable with. I know it's not entirely their fault.

I've heard of some cases that ISPs tried to stop by going to court, like permanent-storage of all data, but lost the case. It's not just the NSA btw. in Germany there is the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), which translates to "Federal Intelligence Service"

X4··on Backdoor found in Linksys, Netgear Routers
>> "you can easily install other firmware"

That's what I did, I flashed it with a custom firmware (that was after I got aware of the backdoor). I've not "reverse-engineered" the base image of my own router like in the article above, because that's a lot of work. I've worked on an awful lot of routers, hubs, switches of all sorts, enterprise and consumer. Have been network administrator for a large global company and I think that I can trust my sources.

What the new user "blablablaat " mentioned is obvious, I'm not stupid to make something like this up. Of course I have no "Provider Services" or anything remotely similar enabled, but it's still possible to connect to the router and take control over it according to my source and I've seen it back then, when I asked for him/her to show it. Now why, do you expect me to prove that? A security researcher, is more qualified than me to create the convincing report you're asking for, sorry. You can feel free to do it yourself too, if you want. It's not my intention to spread rumors or FUD, but to make you at least aware of that your router ain't secure.

X4··on Latvia becomes 18th state to join the eurozone
They are fued.. I feel sorry for them as a European. Our politicians will rip their economy away. This pact they signed essentially sold their country including their people. It's always the same, the strong countries look for weak countries to join their forces by promising money. When the small countries need the money the most, they will get promises and packages coming with many hooks. Hooks that will cripple and kill the economy of the country, such that at the end the strong countries can suck up all that is there. Their money, their land, their resources, their best engineers and workforces. And what's left at the end is not a country, but a lost fight. A fight that was never fought and silently won. Both governments win and assure their own security in trades and assets, but the people loose.
X4··on Backdoor found in Linksys, Netgear Routers
I hacked my Fritz!Box (yeah, a bad name for a german router) and I'm entirely sure that it has a backdoor integrated too. That's why I wiped and flashed it with an alternative image. That and the Telecom's Speedport router are the most popular routers by far in Germany. And both have backdoors, I know that other router manufacturers also integrate backdoors from a source who works at such a company. A friend can also verify the fact, because a different employee told him the same. Also it's public that the ISP can upgrade, modify, flash and disable features remotely. My friend's router has wifi, but their provider disabled it remotely within the firmware (it even has an antenna) and his ISP wants him to pay 5€/m to re-enable wifi.

I really wonder why nobody complained about that earlier. Also the interesting thing here is that for a very long time, you weren't allowed to use a different router than the one provided by your ISP. Which enforced their surveillance monopoly.

Here's an article about reverse engineering the backdoor in D-Link routers using IDA:

Indeed and they buy german spying technology products. However I think the logical fallacy you've stepped in is that the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) doesn't want to get spied on themselves by Skype and Microsoft, maybe. haha :)

But I fully support the message here, I think that spying inside of consumer products is a sign of the abuse of power and monopoly.

X4··on Are my friends and family crazy?
I don't know what your idea is, but most people have objections that are simply not realistic. You cannot create a social network and hope to become a billionaire without knowing what people want/need or at least hitting a tangent. You maybe thinking of Zuckerberg, he hustled hard to get there, really. People simplify what he did, because they don't want to believe that success is either luck, vitamin C (connections) or hard work.

I'm soon available and want to work on some projects for fun anyway. Let's chat on https://vline.com/ about the idea and vision, if you want.. I'll do it, if I believe in the idea, otherwise you can create a profile of what type of developer you need and what needs to be done and post it here or on some job board. (post your email or other contact info on your profile so that people can reach you)

Look, what people here are telling is almost completely true. You've heard that ideas are cheap and execution is hard or that ideas are pipedreams and don't mean anything without "proper execution". The essence of this is true, but there is a part to that picture that is missing. Insider knowledge and making the product so that it's effective and efficient at what it needs to do is what ideas can't offer. That is what you shouldn't share, except with those who you need to share it with.

Nobody will steal your ideas and become a billionaire with it without putting a lot of effort into it. And if they do that, it doesn't mean that they will be any successful by a long shot. That's because there is only so much that can be winners, the rest is doomed to work or to become "the losers" in this race. Someone needs to believe as much as you do into the idea to make it.
