WorkerBee28474··on We Will Not Be Divided
> Imagine if a gun manufacturer sold a gun that you couldn't use against X or Y country

That kind of happens with F35s that the US sells to its allies.

WorkerBee28474··on How did Windows 95 get permission to put Weezer video 'Buddy Holly' on the CD?
> they actually sent some shitty live version which would have avoided paying their old bassist.

Their old bassist did not make for good PR... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandy_Smith

Delaying votes may be one of HN's anti-manipulation tactics.

WorkerBee28474··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
> Can US administration claim a domestic election (like the upcoming 2026 mid-terms) was stolen and… do stuff?

With enough guns, anything is possible.

WorkerBee28474··on Warren Buffett steps down as Berkshire Hathaway CEO after six decades
Berkshire had a pivot where, decades back, Munger convinced Buffett to switch from investing in bad companies at a great price to good companies at a good price. Their new strategy is still active.

That said, the turnaround 'mission' you mention about still happens, but is more associated with private equity than Berkshire.

WorkerBee28474··on Perfect Aircrete, Kitchen Ingredients [video]
I heard about aerogel as a kid and only recently learned how extremely hard it is to make [0], so this seems like a cool and more accessible material in the same vein.

WorkerBee28474··on The gift card accountability sink
Who do you think the article's readers are? Random people? No, it's explicitly for people who are interested in both tech and finance.
WorkerBee28474··on The gift card accountability sink
The author is an expert in the field of payments. What you call "being contrarian" is better called "speaking the truth".
WorkerBee28474··on Framework Raises DDR5 Memory Prices by 50% for DIY Laptops
mo·nop·so·ny /məˈnäpsənē/ a market situation in which there is only one buyer.

It seems like the issue we're having is that we are buyers who are competing against OpenAI, who is another buyer. There isn't only 1 buyer or 1 seller of RAM.

WorkerBee28474··on Socialist ends by market means: A history
I find it interesting, perhaps ironic, how much the cause of social ownership of businesses/'means of production' will be advanced by ... Trump, via the 530A a.k.a. Trump Account.

$1000 at a 10% return for 65 years is $490,371

But were any of your classes gender studies?
WorkerBee28474··on Iceland declares ocean-current instability a national security risk
> ... most severe of the effects of climate change is going to be massive population migration due to extreme weather and agricultural failures

Perhaps it's not worth mentioning that because there are existing well-tested methods of stopping population migration that are available to be deployed once supported by public opinion. Specifically, fences, warships, and machine guns.

WorkerBee28474··on New Glenn Update

WorkerBee28474··on Cancer survival rates are misleading
You don't not treat the control group. You give the control group the current standard treatment, and you give the experimental group the new trial treatment.
WorkerBee28474··on In memory of the Christmas Island shrew
> by 1908 the shrew was thought extinct... Brief rediscoveries in 1958 and 1984 brought fleeting hope

So 2025 might be the 4th time the shrew has been declared extinct.

WorkerBee28474··on Why Tech Inevitability is Self-Defeating
You seem to link cars and ICEs, while ICEs predated cars by a century.
WorkerBee28474··on US to retire its only icebreaker, stranding polar research
Because that's what the headline says, because that's sensational and the truth is not.
WorkerBee28474··on The surprising revival of road bowling, Ireland's ancient sport
+1 to helmets. In youth, the very similar sport of lacrosse actually has a higher risk of concussion than football [0].

WorkerBee28474··on Over 80% of sunscreen performed below their labelled efficacy (2020)
Yeah, I hardly see anything under SPF15, which lets 1/15th of the light in (6.7%). I'd be interested in using an SPF 5 or so (1/5th or 20% of sunlight gets in).
