Workaccount2··on ChatGPT Health is a marketplace, guess who is the product?
The obvious retort to this is:

"If I focused on my health, ate clean and exercised daily, why should I also be subsidizing Billy "video-games-are-my-exercise" fatass's chronic health conditions?"

This is why there is a hyperfixation on shifting blame away from (failing) individuals. The logic breaks when Billy has to admit he just hates exercising.

And yes, before you comment, I know "maybe Billy has (condition outside all control) so it's not on him". Please, see what I just said in the previous statement.

Workaccount2··on AI coding assistants are getting worse?
Sythentic data is already being embraced. Turns out you actually can create good training data with these models.
Workaccount2··on AI coding assistants are getting worse?
Internally everyone is compute constrained. No one will convince me that the models getting dumb, or especially them getting lazy, isn't because the servers are currently being inundated.

However right now it looks like we will move to training specific hardware and inference specific hardware, which hopefully relives some of that tension.

Workaccount2··on AI coding assistants are getting worse?
Remember when "Googling" was a skill?

LLMs are definitely in the same boat. It's even more specific where different models have different quirks so the more time you spend with one, the better the results you get from that one.

Workaccount2··on Japanese electronics store pleads for old PCs amid ongoing hardware shortage
The impossibly large cost is the difference between hardware and software returns.

Hardware by nature forces redesigns whereas software it's always possible to just keep building on top of old bad designs, and so much cheaper and faster to do so. That's why hardware is 10,000x faster than 30 years ago, and even simple word processors are debatabely faster than 30 years ago. Maybe even slower.

The problem doctors have is that 99/100 times ABC is caused by xyz, so they prescribe 123 and the problem goes away.

Overtime, as a human, the doctors just turn into ABC -> 123 machines.

Workaccount2··on How Google got its groove back and edged ahead of OpenAI
I often put the models in direct conversation with each other to work out a framework or solution. It works pretty well, but they do tend to glaze each other a bit.

I'm almost positive that using gemini on ai studio is the cause for a lot of strife.

Most users on it are using it free, and they almost certainly give free users bottom priority/worst compute allocation.

Workaccount2··on How Google got its groove back and edged ahead of OpenAI
People get used to a model and then work best with that model.

If you hand an iPhone user an Android phone, they will complain that Android is awful and useless. The same is true vice versa.

This is in large part why we get so many conflicting reports of model behavior. As you become more and more familiar with a model, especially if it is in fact a good model, other good models will feel janky and broken.

If you don't want crappy e-mail service, you need to pay monthly for it. If you are not paying for it, you are not the customer.

I'm just so tired of people endlessly complaining about things they have never paid for. Let the ad-model carry those who genuinely cannot afford the services they need, it's revolutionary in that regard. But most of you here have the money, so start paying.

Workaccount2··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
Well that's going to do nothing.

But at least people eating the chaff of property owners will celebrate it, I guess.

Just to reinforce this, the last place I lived in was owned by a corporation...of one man, who lived a town away in a modest house and worked as a paper pusher by day.
Workaccount2··on US Job Openings Decline to Lowest Level in More Than a Year
It's even better than that, pay less and support global trade.

Just make sure you have a degree and a service sector white collar job though.

Again, open models exist. These companies don't have a monopoly on the tech and they know it.

So maybe celebrate open/private/local models for empowering people rather than selfishly complain about it?

Workaccount2··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
Open/local models are available.

Maybe not as good, but they can certainly do far far more than what was available a few years ago.

Democratizing coding so regular people can get the most out of computers is the opposite of oppression. You are mistaking your interests for societies interests.

It's the same with artists who are now pissed that regular people can manifest their artistic ideas without needing to go through an artist or spend years studying the craft. The artists are calling the AI companies oppressors because they are breaking the artist's stranglehold on the market.

It's incredibly ironic how socializing what was a privatized ability has otherwise "socialist" people completely losing their shit. Just the mask of pure virtue slipping...

This is a repeating cycle however. The boomers where all hippies riding the wave of a future utopia where everyone is making art and dancing with each other all day. Screw the man, grass and love all day!

Getting older what I have realized is that the enthusiasm of the youth is born from the lack of experience, lack of responsibility, lack of anything to lose, and a position to really only gain from any changes. When you are young you are largely a spectator to the game, and just like any other game, your views will change when you become a player instead of an armchair expert.

Anthropic dropped out of the general "AGI" race and seems to be purely focused on coding, maybe racing to get the first "automated machine learning programmer". Whatever the case, it seems to be paying (coding) dividends to just be focusing on coding.
Workaccount2··on Mamdani Targets Junk Fees and Hidden Charges in Two Executive Orders
It's totally viable and trivially possible to just payout earned interest to these accounts. You can still issue giftcards, it's just no longer passively profitable to do so.

The assholes on reddit aren't the problem, often they are the people who are closest to breaking free from the swamp (yes, some are just assholes).

The problem reddit has is the celebration of it's doomerism, even in the small hobby subs the vibe is still present. The highest upvoted comments are so nauseatingly repetitive and formulaic, ridden with whatever the contemporary dogma of reddit is, substantiated by snowballs of echo-chamber fallacy with pebbles of truth in the middle.

The goal is to kill those payment schemes which mostly exist for exactly the reason I laid out.

Sell a product for $7 but only allow "recharge" in $5 increments. It pretty much guarantees that you will have tons of accounts with random dollar amounts laying around in them, never to be used. Even for regular gift cards, the counter party would be beholden to honoring them at their full value, as they should.

Besides, nothing it stopping you from rolling monthly treasuries and using those as a bank. Something people with enough money to exploit this proposed "gift card bank" would almost surely already be aware of.

Workaccount2··on Mamdani Targets Junk Fees and Hidden Charges in Two Executive Orders
Make an order that any service which holds your money for spending with them (starbucks app, giftcards, ez-pass) has to pay you interest at the benchmark rate (or BM - 0.25%, something small).

It's such a money maker but no one complains because they either don't know it's happening or don't care enough to say something. But 1 million people with $10 in their account will generate $1,000/day in free money for the holder.

I was chronically on reddit daily from when Digg collapsed until they pulled the API. I was long overdue to leave by that point anyway.

Now in the last couple years, both my sisters have discovered reddit, and hanging out with them is like the god damn /r/all comments sections all over again. So insidious.

"There is a bush over there" is not news.

"There is a bush with berries over there" is news.

"There is a tiger in that bush over there" is adrenaline inducing huge news.

The cynical doomerism of reddit is like an infectious disease that ensnares you in their pit of misery with it's initial blast of catharsis. People whose lives bring them out of that swamp leave reddit and stop contributing, so it's mainly populated with miserable cynical doomers all jerking each other off about how screwed they are. Most of them are teenage/college kids working bottom rung jobs/entry level work/unemployed, with all the naivete that comes with it. Stay away from it.
Workaccount2··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
The batteries on modern EV's have full dedicated heating and cooling systems. They will not charge until they heat up to charging temperature.

Discharging in the cold and sitting in the cold are not bad for the batteries, but it does limit available power.

Believe it or not, Canada has a robust EV market.

Workaccount2··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
We're not speaking down to people like that, we are telling them they are not part of the conversation. You really shouldn't get an EV if you cannot plug in overnight.
Workaccount2··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
It would be embarrassing if they jumped the gun with promises from a Chinese oem who was also just white labeling some other Chinese battery. Or giving engineering samples to Donut from a process with a 1% yield hoping they can figure it out in time.

To put in HN terms, if someone sold you a 20TB SDcard knowing your R/W speeds are limited to 100kbps, it's going to take you a while to confirm that the card is actually 20TB. Rough analogy, but there are similar ways you can hide true battery performance.

It's just extremely suspect that a company full of mechanical and electrical engineers, who made (supposed) blow out gains in electrical motors this year, also found the holy grail of (battery) chemical engineering too.

Workaccount2··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
This is so out of left field and so "ideal" that it warrants some pretty heavy skepticism. Donut isn't even a battery company, and plenty of other battery companies with lots of knowledge and lots more money have been pouring over this problem with mixed results.

Because of this, now I am even a bit skeptical of their electric motor claims, which before I didn't really question much at all.

Workaccount2··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
The biggest issue is that people think EV's are gas cars that have electricity instead of gasoline, with the main difference being you have to sit at the "gas pump" for 45 minutes instead of 2.

But the way you daily an EV is totally different than a gas car, and even the way you travel is totally different. People have no concept of EV ownership, so they just go with the gas model that they know. But it is totally incorrect.
