Yes it is my own product. Sorry for not pointing it out.

With or without equations, just use MonsterWriter. It gives you LaTeX results without needing to know what LaTeX is.

But, yes LaTeX has other benefits, e.g. citing references, or creating PDFs according to layout and typesettings best practices.

You will have to store it in the cloud eventually, otherwise it is just local software, not local-first

now you can compare it to pull requests in software development, but in software development we have compilers, linters and tests which point out merge bugs.

but will you ever be able to trust the automatic merge?

Imagine a complex document with a few collaborators which work in parallel offline and make significant changes (that is the use case of automerge?).

You will have to proofread the entire document after every non trivial automatic merge, or how good does this work in practice? Would it be easier to just wait for a wifi connection and do the changes in real time?

Any insights/research on what kind of users care / don't care about local first software?

It is the same problem with a pandoc-based workflow. You just end up yak-shaving and spending more time tuning the toolchain than with your writing work.

I think there is a market for users who don't wanna bother with a "set of tools" as Manubot describes itself on the website.

While MonsterWriter uses LaTeX in the background, you do not see it. You only get the resulting pdf. Also, while it is possible to integrate with Zotero, you don't have to, you can just insert the DOI/ISNB/... into MonsterWriter and it will fetch the info as well.

For now, it is only copy&paste

To have some content, open any website and press cmd+a, just past it into the editor. depending on the size it might take a little but the editor tries to clean up your pasted content and inserts it.

For now you could check if Paperpile supports BibLaTeX export and just import the references using BibLaTeX.

I guess it is to make it crash save, e.g. in case the server dies in the middle of a write, the database would be corrupt after restart, with the wal file it can recover.

I'm not much into the details but I'm wondering why is it not always writing to "<database>-wal" once it is full, it is renamed to "<database>-wal-0" and it starts writing again into "<database>-wal", once it is full again it is renamed to "<database>-wal-1" ?

do you need to stop the db for the backup in order to ensure consistency of the snapshot?
