WinterMount223··on Clockwork raises $21M to keep server clocks in sync
For GPS precision is much more important than accuracy.
WinterMount223··on Does quantum mechanics need imaginary numbers?
Those are complex numbers, just expressed differently. Complex numbers are not tied to a notation.
WinterMount223··on Does quantum mechanics need imaginary numbers?
I’m not convinced. Complex numbers are a representation of a system. Yes, you can express it somehow else, but at its core it’s the same. As I understand it, they are saying that using complex numbers is the simplest (pun not intended) representation necessary and there’s no further simplification possible. That is meaningful because an ancient Greek would say that reals or even integers are sufficient to describe the world. They are not. Just like Euclides was not enough.
WinterMount223··on California bill would let parents sue social media companies for addicting kids
Perhaps that’s what they are naturally inclined to do?
WinterMount223··on California bill would let parents sue social media companies for addicting kids
So what’s the incentive to open and keep a playground? It seems like a huge liability. Part of the problem is adults let children play with cellphones because it’s “safe”.
WinterMount223··on Russia Is Spiraling Toward a $150B Default Nightmare
Not every market is a free market. Also there’s not only one rubles market rate.
WinterMount223··on TELL HN: Stripe STOLE OUR $159k
Honest question: do you not determine that during onboarding/account signup? Or do you do warm onboarding wherein essentially everyone is accepted and some vetted later on?
WinterMount223··on I found a security issue on a competitor, got fired and served a summons
Very neat idiom. Is it really used and understood by people in real life?
WinterMount223··on Levels of Technical Leadership
That approach is useful and has been discussed in works like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Requisite_organization
WinterMount223··on Hands-On with PostgreSQL Authorization – Part 2 – Row-Level Security
Can you refer to roles? Something like “set local role (SELECT name FROM roles WHERE id = 7)”
WinterMount223··on Deliberately optimizing for harm
I guess developments are not published on Nature.
WinterMount223··on The Godfather almost never happened
It’s usual in Spanish in variations like “Revenge is best served cold.”
WinterMount223··on Google Fi bricked my iPhone 11 Pro Max (2020)
I didn’t say that. In your example, you are a consumer of a public service. In the Google case you are a user of a private service.
WinterMount223··on Google Fi bricked my iPhone 11 Pro Max (2020)
It’s not unusual. They decide that they don’t want to do business with you anymore. It can be included in their TOS that pre-arbitration is mandatory. By you going directly to civil courts you are breaching their TOS which is a reason for termination.
WinterMount223··on Ask HN: My Google account was hacked, Google says they can't help
Still that can be vulnerable. If you really wanted to give up privacy, it could work like bank accounts work where a human banker actually knows you. But this would cost.
WinterMount223··on How To Do Less
AKA brain dump.
WinterMount223··on Why am I building a programming language in private?
What’s wrong with that? (Serious literal question.)
WinterMount223··on Storing UTC is not a silver bullet (2019)
Semi-serious question: At what speed does time propagate away from UTC? Do systems take into account relativistic effects when synchronizing across the earth, given that “Now” does not propagate instantaneously?
WinterMount223··on Storing UTC is not a silver bullet (2019)
Wall clock is solved by having a camera pointed at local live news where local time is shown, and having your system updated periodically where this period is arbitrarily short.
WinterMount223··on A Formal Theory of Spaghetti Code
Thanks. That’s very common in weak relational database schemas where people like adding redundant stateful columns.
WinterMount223··on A Formal Theory of Spaghetti Code
I’m sorry I don’t get it.
WinterMount223··on A non-standard book list for software developers
Depends enormously on your level and willingness and dedication. At that level the best ones are Spivak, Apostol, Fichtenholtz, Kudryavtsev.
WinterMount223··on A non-standard book list for software developers
Good books but still quite standard. Spivak’s is standard on initial calculus courses at universities.

If you really wanted non-standard but relevant authors I would add Feyerabend, Kuhn, Kahneman, Dostoyevsky, Borges, Taleb, Montaigne, Popper, Hofstadter, Don Norman, Alexandrescu. Add something about systems of representation by Kierkegaard or Nietzche or some interpretations by later authors.

WinterMount223··on Why the 2020 census has 9 fake people in a single house
Flip a coin. Heads you answer the truth. Tails you flip again: heads you answer A, tails you answer not A. Construct a binary tree as required.
WinterMount223··on Launch HN: Micro Meat (YC S21) – Technology for scaling cultivated meat
Some thoughts. Tumors in muscular tissue are relatively rare. The growth cycle in these bioreactors should be short, giving less probability of runaway mutations. It’s a hyper growth medium with supernatural levels of growth hormones, so tumors may actually be favored. Are tumoral mammal cells integrated by humans when infested raw?
WinterMount223··on Postgres Auditing in 150 lines of SQL
Usually you make heavy use of SELECT DISTINCT ON (…) FROM … ORDER BY ts DESC and you can use WHERE ts < ts_0 to recreate until ts_0. Liberal use of MATERIALIZED VIEWs.
WinterMount223··on Postgres Auditing in 150 lines of SQL
DDL transactions should be committed orders of magnitude less frequently than data transactions, so it’s reasonable to separate their logging.
WinterMount223··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Squats and deadlifts.
WinterMount223··on Stainless steel leaches nickel and chromium into foods during cooking (2013)
Unglazed ceramics can leach arsenic depending on their composition, so if you are really paranoid your safest bet is new lab grade borosilicate glass.
WinterMount223··on Stainless steel leaches nickel and chromium into foods during cooking (2013)
Tomato sauce is not only acidic but also has a strong chelating agent citric acid which is known to corrode stainless steel in industrial settings.
