WesolyKubeczek··on Building Pi with Pi
In this case I have a perfect agent code right here:

    const perfectAgent = (prompt) => "Nope";

Sometimes I’m wondering what to call people who get offended on behalf of other people or entities that they imagine might be offended by some term or other. See, they feel bad, and like small children, they assume everyone else must feel bad.

Okay, in case of people and words like n___er, one could argue they have a leg to stand on. But stupid computer programs? Really?

And then I remember that in my part of the galaxy, we indeed have a word to describe such people. We call them “dumbasses”.

WesolyKubeczek··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
At this point the US is the kid eating glue, it looks like.
WesolyKubeczek··on Going full AI engineer, not touching code anymore
Feels like what one of those morbidly obese people riding electric scooters would write about not missing walking one bit. God forbid they end up in an area where accessible alternatives to stairs are not a thing.
WesolyKubeczek··on The last six months in LLMs in five minutes
> Key has been to spend a fair amount of time on initial overall design document, which is split into tangible and limited phases.

> For each phase an implementation plan is made. At the end, a summary document of what was delivered and what was discovered.

> I do check the documents, and what they're doing. I also check the tests, some more thorough.

Sounds like programming, but with extra steps.

WesolyKubeczek··on The Quiet Renovation at Bitwarden
Don't I have to rely on the OG frontend/GUI components, though? They are one automatic update away from bundling taking custom server address away with important security fixes, in a way that you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.
WesolyKubeczek··on Cannibalistic attacks between gray seals leave telltale “corkscrew” injuries
It is both.
WesolyKubeczek··on U.S. DOJ demands Apple and Google unmask over 100k users of car-tinkering app
Make a law that fines coal rollers heavily, gets their car seized, their driver’s license revoked for life — all for the first offense. Give cops bonuses for the most coal rollers caught, allow them to power trip as much as they like, and I guarantee that a full-on hunting season will open.
WesolyKubeczek··on SecurityBaseline.eu
You still have quite enough people in high places who are direct or indirect beneficiaries of companies that are either Russian or tied to Russia, so nothing will ever happen even then.
WesolyKubeczek··on Postmortem: TanStack NPM supply-chain compromise
When you update your packages, are you using that ssh laptop?
WesolyKubeczek··on Removable batteries in smartphones will be mandatory in the EU starting in 2027
SD cards and phone jacks!
WesolyKubeczek··on Trademark violation: Fake Notepad++ for Mac
I see a Russian name, I assume very cavalier approach to copyright and trademark laws, especially if it is about someone else's copyright or trademark. This heuristic has had enough nines for me to qualify as 100% accurate.

WesolyKubeczek··on Security through obscurity is not bad
Security through obscurity is only bad when it’s the only measure used. If proper security is also in place, it is the cherry on top.

For example, while I know that ssh bruteforcing bots won’t enter my server no matter how much they try, putting ssh on a non-standard port reduces the number of tries to zero.

WesolyKubeczek··on Specsmaxxing – On overcoming AI psychosis, and why I write specs in YAML
If you have ever been to car forums, it's quite the same there.

People are people.

WesolyKubeczek··on Specsmaxxing – On overcoming AI psychosis, and why I write specs in YAML
It's fun how people brag of their agentmaxxing, but if you ask them what those agents are busy actually producing, it's invariably another agent harness so they can agentmaxx better. NFT/blockchain ecosystem was much the same.
WesolyKubeczek··on Where the goblins came from
I feel like somehow Jakub Pachocki’s request for an ascii art unicorn got rewritten into “ascii art of Wholesome Soyjak wearing a butterfly costume who uses Arch, by the way”
WesolyKubeczek··on HERMES.md in commit messages causes requests to route to extra usage billing
This is not just one bug, though; it’s a bug that takes money that ain’t theirs to take.
WesolyKubeczek··on Ghostty is leaving GitHub
If you choose something self-hostable (whether hosted commercially for you or no is of no relevance), I'm very interested to hear about it.
WesolyKubeczek··on Your phone is about to stop being yours
On one hand, having a free for all is very good, especially for developers, and for programmability of our devices as such. Screw iPads.

On the other hand, malware which coaxes normies into installing unverified apks, is an undeniable fact of life. It's nice to be pontificating as a power user who has never been phished or whose devices never became botnet zombies in their life.

On yet another hand, higher-end malware (made by those who can afford the store fees) is there on the freaking play store and app store, so, I guess, shrug

WesolyKubeczek··on I Cancelled Claude: Token Issues, Declining Quality, and Poor Support
But when you write code by hand, you at least are there as it’s happening, which makes reading and understanding way easier.
WesolyKubeczek··on U.S. banks may soon collect citizenship data from customers
Catch-22 lives on.

You are required to prove your citizenship to the government (by proxy of your bank or otherwise). The government lacks a unified document of identity which would by law act as a proof of citizenship, and reserves its right to call any other document it is issuing to be “insufficient”.

WesolyKubeczek··on The RAM shortage could last years
Was it debubked in any way (e.g. by OpenAI actually showing what they do with the wafers?)
WesolyKubeczek··on The RAM shortage could last years
I fear that the real reason we do have a shortage, I mean, the real reason for the demand, is AI companies scooping what they can so that their competitors, whether existing or incumbent, can’t get to it.
WesolyKubeczek··on The RAM shortage could last years
You can still use as much memory, but fit more things into it, so I don’t think the current market hogs will let go easily.
WesolyKubeczek··on It is incorrect to "normalize" // in HTTP URL paths
A sane configuration, of course, would collapse the slashes first, so it would be /?w=a&x=c&y=d&z=.

See, it’s because when we do these acrobatics with turning path elements into query parameters, we do it for humans, so they are more readable. Humans can make typos, and accidentally entering two slashes instead of one is not exactly unheard of.

If we do it for some other code, we shouldn’t be rewriting anything at all, and just use query parameters.

WesolyKubeczek··on "cat readme.txt" is not safe if you use iTerm2
So are a couple shells that use some kind of webkit tty. VS Code’s integrated terminal counts, I guess.

It could be an interesting paradigm, though, to have a hybrid between fullscreen and traditional tty programs: you output some forms, they are displayed by the terminal inline, but your scrollback just works like normal, and you can freely copy and paste stuff into the form. Once you submit the form, it becomes non-interactive, but stays in your scrollback buffer. You can select and copy textual data from it, but the form’s chrome cannot be selected as line drawing characters.

Probably could be a piece of concept art, I guess.

WesolyKubeczek··on "cat readme.txt" is not safe if you use iTerm2
One reason I still prefer iTerm2 or Ghostty over Terminal.app is that it has way saner settings for what the word boundaries are, and it lets me select whole paths by double clicking on them. If there was a way to change it for the default terminal, I would just be using it.
WesolyKubeczek··on "cat readme.txt" is not safe if you use iTerm2
Ask me how I know what “tput reset” does.
WesolyKubeczek··on "cat readme.txt" is not safe if you use iTerm2
Which is why I’m also wary of the ghostty’s integration that is supposed to inject its terminfo when you ssh in.

How about bloody no and working with upstream ncurses to update the terminfo database?

WesolyKubeczek··on "cat readme.txt" is not safe if you use iTerm2
We call those “web browsers” nowadays, they even can execute untrusted code to make your UI livelier…
