Roast

Spends so much time talking about EV charging that they probably have range anxiety while walking Claims to be security-focused but probably still uses 'password123' for their coffee machine So Swiss they probably organize their HN bookmarks with the precision of a Geneva watch

WelcomeShorty··on Self-driving Tesla does 'the craziest things you can imagine'
Watching the film I knew where I have experienced these exact same problems:

When I thought my wife and kids to drive!

Incredible how many of the exact same mistakes it makes as they did.

WelcomeShorty··on Google Maps now requires WiFi scanning to use navigation
What I found is that google maps EXCELS in redirecting past traffic jams and what have you, when driving (cross Europe) and really no other navigation available to me (iPhone) does that even remotely as reliable.

EDIT: Meaning I am able to keep my wheels rolling and do not end up in traffic jams.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: Should HN users be incentivized to use/visit newest submissions?
Rather not, I like NH as it is. I do not want to get notified upon reactions, I do not want to be fed the latest, I do not want emotes wilder then :)

What makes this site so compelling is the quality replies & discussions and the lack of anything blinking and shiny.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: What is your home networking setup?
Switched to the Google WiFi about 2 years ago and I love it. It just works. The mesh is 4 large, provides WiFi / Internet for 3 households (7 people, about 30 devices, iPhones, iPads, Chromecasts, PS4, Smart TVs, printers & iMacs) and takes absolutely zero maintenance.

Only thing I have to when adding an old new device (printers!) is set the WPA to 2 when adding it, then switching back to WPA3.

WelcomeShorty··on How to quit like a boss
My experience is you can tell them in the exit interview what you want to, it will be ignored just like your early signals.
WelcomeShorty··on GPS
Side note:

> The current Android platform supports GPS, SBAS, GLONASS, QZSS, BEIDOU, GALILEO, and IRNSS[0].

But it depends (and varies wildly) on the hardware of said Android. I buy 3 to 5 cheap (sub 100 euro/US$) Androids per year and it always surprises me which device supports which GNSS is supported and how accurate or not they are.

PS I use them to Wigle (https://wigle.net) mainly, and the WiFi reception is exactly as diverse as the GNSS.

WelcomeShorty··on Dinosaur food: 100M year old foods we still eat today
My kids had friends (round 10 yo) who claimed they did not like the taste of water. That blew their minds since they'd been drinking water their whole life.

It is still the main beverage we drink, and there are still those who never drink it. Incredible.

WelcomeShorty··on Poll: Why are you staying at your job?
> Retiring soon anyway

Yeah, I took a low level job to spend my last 10 working years to get to do what normal people do. I mean, get a hobby and so on. Been at it for a couple of years now and found nothing that really triggers me. Miss my 60+ hour job and dread the enormous amount of days off.

But I am afraid I can not deliver any more so I stay where I am, attempting finding a hobby that grabs me.

WelcomeShorty··on The curious case of the Raspberry Pi in the network closet (2019)
PR makes it possible.

I have personally identified more than a handful of employees who'd use their work computers for... let's say "access to inappropriate content". All of them where invited by HR & legal and let go with a more then decent deal.

Absolutely everything was done to prevent the company being associated with anything nasty.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: Unusual Recruiting Stories?
DBA friend asked for help with a critical performance problem, let me in the building as guest. I identified the (network) problem in minutes, his manager walked by and ask how the issue was going.

When my friend explained I spotted the solution in minutes, he offered me a job on the spot.

Applied for a job in another country. Was invited within days. I landed the job instantly since I helped a guy with a big zombie network problem years ago via a mailing list. He was now the hiring party and recognised me by my background.

Re-met a school buddy while bringing my kids to school, where he brought his. Needed help with a large, multiple year, consulting job. We rocked it.

Met some googlies at a conf I attended while on holidays. Had a couple of great conversations. Was "interviewed" on the spot and accepted the job offer 2 hours later. Wife not so happy since we had to move countries again :)

Coming to think of it, most of my jobs I landed "unusually" compared to how that process seems to go for many people.

Edit: not all went well, BTW. Once I was interviewed and some HR person wanted to explain the results of a "test" I had done before the interview. Told her no, I have no interest in what looks like an astrology drawing. She instantly left the room and after 10 minuted I figured I was not the ideal candidate and left the building unattended.

WelcomeShorty··on Minecraft as a Kubernetes admin tool
20 years ago I pitched something like this, but based on network traffic (shaping with routers, switches & fws) managed in a 3D world.

My presentation skills suck, so it never got off the ground but I still visualise network traffic in my head that way. Would still love to roam around in networks and enjoy the graphics.

WelcomeShorty··on How to handle difficult clients
I once was thought a very different attitude towards "difficult clients":

Embrace them. They are the ones who make you / your product better.

Without the "difficult clients" you will not improve fast enough, you will become complacent and will be out performed by others.

Now *ç%%/&% clients are a different issue, but I would not call these difficult.

WelcomeShorty··on I became the internet’s most notorious bike thief
Funny anecdote, but the initial reason for us to all drive shit looking bikes was the reason that these did not get stolen so often :)

Not so sure your design / desirable bike will last long thou. See here (1) where an absolute unique Audi RS6 DTM was stolen WHILE being used in a film shoot.

WelcomeShorty··on The case of the recursive resolvers: What happened during Slack’s DNSSEC rollout
We had to do DNSSEC (for a couple of "system relevant" services) too.

Was it a hard requirement? No, but the fat fingered audit companies really like to tick that "should" box green and would be more lenient with other debatable findings, so it was suddenly "in our best interests" to comply.

WelcomeShorty··on Buying an ebike
> The solution here is speed limits on bike baths

He speaks about Amsterdam, there is no such thing as law enforcement there, specifically when it comes to bikes & mopeds. Whether it is about stealing or selling stolen bikes, speed limits or zebra crossings, cycling on sidewalks or against traffic, nothing stops anyone to do whatever they want.

WelcomeShorty··on How to Ask for Feedback (2020)
Interesting, and since I see quite a few of these request come by, I wanted to share my pet peeve on the subject:

Sure you would like to know everything about me AND your subject, but as soon as you ask me "ASL?" I am out.

Or in other words: do not over ask.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: What was your experience like moving from an IC to a manager role?
That brings it to the point quite well from my experience.
WelcomeShorty··on Are people lying more since the rise of social media and smartphones?
Maybe I am old or just tainted, but in my experience people have always lied as much as today. Basically as much as you get away with and then some.

Surely "online" makes it easier to vastly over act / lie in that specific "carefully curated window" (I like that expression, will steal it from you), but AFK people have not changed in my experience.
