WatchDog··on Zohran Mamdani wins the New York mayoral race
Nothing on that page contradicts anything I said.
WatchDog··on Zohran Mamdani wins the New York mayoral race
I’m not a New Yorker or even an American, but it’s interesting just how much coverage this election has gotten in social media.

I think most of his major policies are pretty bad, but I also think the reaction against him has been over the top.

He is going to need cooperation from the state legislature, if he wants to collect the taxes needed to fund his policies, and I’m not sure how successful he will be at that.

A lot of people are rooting both for and against him, so it’s going to be interesting either way.

Over 50% of rented units in New York are regulated somehow. 34% “rent stabilised pre-74”, 8% “rent stabilized post-73”, 1% rent controlled, 7% public housing, 2% other

They are both price controls on rent. The eligibility criteria are different, and the terms by which rent may increase are different, but they seem pretty close to the same thing to me.
WatchDog··on Normalize Identifying Corporate Devices in Your Software
He describes OSI licenses as “genocide-friendly”, and links to the OSI page about how their licenses don’t prohibit the software being used for “evil”.

Yet his own license also has no such prohibition. You are free to commit genocide using his tiling window manager, provided that your genocide is strictly non-commercial.

WatchDog··on SocketAddrV6 is not roundtrip serializable
Another day, another reason ipv6 should have been ipv4 with more bits.
WatchDog··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
I’ve been out of the Java ecosystem for a while, so I wasn’t involved in patching anything for log4j, but I don’t see why it would be difficult for the majority of projects.

Should just be a version bump in one place.

In the general case Java and maven doesn’t support multiple versions of the same library being loaded at once(not without tricks at least, custom class loaders or shaded deps), so it shouldn’t matter what transitive dependencies depend on.

Maven releases are immutable
WatchDog··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
My apologies I should have said "version ranging" instead of "semantic versioning".

Before version ranging, maven dependency resolution was deterministic.

WatchDog··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
Lock files are only needed because of version ranging.

Maven worked fine without semantic versioning and lock files.

Edit: Changed "semantic versioning" to "version ranging"

WatchDog··on Wikipedia says traffic is falling due to AI search summaries and social video
Infrastructure has long been a tiny portion of wikipedias costs. I think Wikipedia even makes it easy to export all of its data, I don’t think AI scrapers would be a significant new cost
WatchDog··on Disk Prices
I would like to see a chart that compares the disk price costs, versus cloud storage costs over the last 10 years.

It seems like they haven’t really kept pace at all. Obviously cloud providers have many costs other than disks, but I’m a bit disappointed by how much more expensive it is.

WatchDog··on When Curl Works but IntelliJ Doesn't: The Ollama Connection Mystery
So I understand why preferring ipv4 would fix an issue while using DNS, but why would Java fail to connect when directly using the ip address?
WatchDog··on RediShell: Critical remote code execution vulnerability in Redis
Agreed, adding to this, if a malicious actor already has the ability to execute arbitrary LUA scripts on your redis instance, then you are probably already pretty screwed.
WatchDog··on Nvidia to Invest $5B in Intel
Doesn't feel all that long ago when Intel pushed Nvidia out of the chipset market, and how that felt almost existential for Nvidia at the time.

Tables have turned a fair bit since then.

WatchDog··on iPhone Air
They could fix the camera bump and improve the battery life, just by making the phone thicker.

With the introduction of the iPhone Air, it would have been a great opportunity to do this on the normal model.

Those who care about phone thickness could buy the Air, and the rest of us could have our large battery flat phones.

WatchDog··on Apple pulls iPhone torrent app from AltStore PAL in Europe
Some more context from the linked github issue[0], the app was removed because of European sanctions against Russia, it seems that the app developer who now lives in Malta, has a Russian background.

What is interesting is that it's Apple enforcing these sanctions, rather than AltStore.

The amount of control that Apple exercises over these alternative app stores, really does seem to be against the spirit of the DMA.

WatchDog··on Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war
> Amazon doesn't provide useful tools for building durable multi-AZ applications. Most customers are not going to implement Paxos

Don't really agree here, yes they screw you financially on cross-AZ bandwidth, but all of their popular services are built to work well across availability zones.

Most people don't need access to a low level consensus service like Paxos, instead they will be using one of amazons managed database services, or s3, that provides higher level abstractions, and automatically manages consensus behind the scenes.

WatchDog··on Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war
You have all these labs spending billions on researchers and training clusters, not seeing much return on investment, meanwhile Amazon just partners with the labs, and provides inference for their models, and that seems to be fairly profitable for them.

Why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free?

WatchDog··on Windsurf employee #2: I was given a payout of only 1% what my shares where worth
I'm not sure, but my interpretation is that Gary is implying that Prem Qu Nair received $20 million from the deal, and that by posting this tweet, he has violated the terms of the agreement, which generally have non disparagement clauses, and Gary will see to it that he won't receive anything.

WatchDog··on Do not download the app, use the website
Some of the third party apps were quite good, certainly better than the reddit mobile site, but that's mostly because the reddit mobile site is just so deliberately awful.

There aren't really any major technical reasons why the mobile site couldn't be as good.

WatchDog··on TODOs aren't for doing
The example seems like more of a FIXME than a TODO.

It’s a clear error, but likely unimportant enough to bother addressing.

WatchDog··on FCC to eliminate gigabit speed goal and scrap analysis of broadband prices
All other things equal, higher bandwidth links are inherently lower latency.

Propagation delay usually dominates latency, so it's generally not the biggest factor, but on a simple local network with two PCs and a switch, you can expect about 1ms latency with 100BASE-T, and 0.12ms latency with 1000BASE-T.

  | Component | 100 Mb/s | 1 Gb/s |
  | ---------------------------------------------- | ------------------- | ----------------- |
  | Propagation (30 m) | ≈ 0.15 µs | same |
  | Two NIC serializations (TX + RX, 1 500 B each) | 2 × 120 µs = 240 µs | 2 × 12 µs = 24 µs |
  | Two switch serializations (store‑and‑forward) | 2 × 120 µs = 240 µs | 24 µs |
  | Processing in switch + NICs | \~10 µs | \~10 µs |

WatchDog··on AWS Lambda Silent Crash – A Platform Failure, Not an Application Bug [pdf]
This is a simple misunderstanding of the Lambda execution lifecycle, but it's maybe not a great look for AWS support, that no one there was able to explain the problem to this guy.

I guess it's possible someone did explain it to him, and David hasn't mentioned that in his diatribe.

WatchDog··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X

WatchDog··on OBBB signed: Reinstates immediate expensing for U.S.-based R&D

You shouldn’t interpret this sites focus as the people that post here not thinking there are more important things.

WatchDog··on Continuous Glucose Monitoring
I've been using "freestyle libre" devices on my diabetic cat, but they are quite expensive(~$110 AUD), and typically don't last the whole 14 day period before failing. Although I imagine they are much more reliable on a human.

I've stopped using them because it's just a bit too expensive, and my cat's diabetes is more stable now.

I opened up a freestyle libre 2, it has a EM9304 bluetooth SOC, and a TI RF430 NFC microcontroller, chatgpt deepresearch estimated the bill of materials to be about $5 USD[0].

Some companies[1] are developing reusable CGMs, the electronics are reusable, but the glucose oxidase probe, and applicator needle are still consumable. I'm not sure if that will bring the costs down much, it doesn't seem like the BOM is the main factor in the price of existing CGMs anyway.

WatchDog··on New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profiles
Wow these are incredibly broad, in particular:

> Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations.

There are plenty of dual citizens that would proudly admit that their first loyalty is to Israel.

Other examples from the document use the term "Jews as a people", whereas this example seems to apply to accusing any individual.

Although perhaps a generous interpretation of the example, is that it excludes Israeli dual citizens, because Israel would be one of "their own nations"

WatchDog··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
I'm not American, thus I had no vote in the election, nor do I like Trump for a number of reasons.

However, enforcement of immigration laws has been one of the biggest parts of his election platform, if not the central part(build the wall, etc).

I imagine his voters are happy to see some action being taken.

The protestors could really do with some better optics, destroying property and waving foreign flags is just going to increase approval for military action.

If the protestors had instead marched peacefully with American flags, it would have been a much better PR win.
