WastedCucumber··on Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol
I'm not looking forward to when there's an AI pyschosis case where it turns out ChatGPT sold a bump stock or gave a bulk discount on fertilizer.
WastedCucumber··on Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol
I doubt it. I think it will take a long time to dethrone the tried and true google search of "<product I'm considering> reddit"
WastedCucumber··on Buffett indicator says stock market overvalued
Well, sure, but it's been heavily overvalued territory for a couple years now. I'm not sure the quote about 200% is really relevant anymore, as (as far as I understand it) the "reasonable" bounds in terms of percentage are thought to increase over time, owing to increasing global trade (which of course might now be decreasing).
WastedCucumber··on High-power microwave defeats drone swarm
I was wondering the same thing, but haven't found much. Sounds like it's only ever been a mobile installation - on a trailer, stryker, and a ship. Except for the ship, that probably means a relatively limited power supply. And its limited range probably means that stationary installations don't make much sense.

Sure seems like NATO would love to get a hold of some of these.

WastedCucumber··on Typst: A Possible LaTeX Replacement
In my experience, formatting is just about the only thing that a department/university cares about (outside of the folks on the committee), and they will send back a thesis until they're satisfied with the formatting, and that means lost time. Perhaps throwaway_7274's department has a reputation for particular attention to (meaningless) detail.
WastedCucumber··on Typst: A Possible LaTeX Replacement
God it's so much easier than LaTeX. I wrote so many things in LaTeX over the years, and writing (and debugging) switching to Typst felt like, well, like somebody had been fighting me every step of the way, and then finally stopped. I'm not going back, if I can help it.

But I will say I've mostly written relatively simple documents in it, so maybe that colors my experience.

WastedCucumber··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
Just in a cursory check into some of the other articles using the phrase, it seems like they're mostly cases where an investigator might encounter retaliation for speaking out. It's hard to imagine that happening for the present example.
WastedCucumber··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
This article describes some secret service messaging about busting some basic (possibly?) criminal enterprise, how the NYT amplifies that messaging without question, and names a couple of experts who the author finds questionable (which is the part I'm most unsure about, but honestly I just don't want to have more names to memorize).

After everything the gov't has tried to hype in the last decade (I'm including some things under Biden's term too), and esp. the efforts made in Trump second term, sure seems like it checks out to me.

So maybe you could name one of the conclusions and its premises, and describe how they don't follow. Cause I certainly don't follow what you're on about.

WastedCucumber··on South Korea's President says US investment demands would spark financial crisis
Thanks for your comment and sources. I've found similar information already. What I was really looking for was, say, an in-depth legal analysis of B1 visas and visa waivers.

But as far as I can tell now, there's not any really clear definition of what counts as work under those visa (waivers), and the ambiguity was tolerated by all parties. So, in effect, the only reasoning is (like always) "this is illegal because we say so".

Thanks again for the info.

WastedCucumber··on South Korea's President says US investment demands would spark financial crisis
Do you have a source describing the "illegality"? This is genuine question - I have not found a source digging into the legal question.

The best I could find was a suggestion that their visa waivers were in fact correct for the purpose, except for the fact that their companies were using visa waivers over and over again. Or maybe the workers were? I'm not sure.

WastedCucumber··on To stop Arctic ice from disappearing, one company tries making it thicker
Even if they're a long shots, I always feel a little high from the hope of climate engineering projects.

I guess freezing new water on top of existing ice might also increae the ice albedo, in the case that it's covered in some amount of black carbon, plastics, or other pollutants? But that's probably less relevant in the (more isolated) polar regions.

WastedCucumber··on US Government seeks deportation of Mahmoud Khalil (again)
Thanks for the info! I didn't realize any of that.
WastedCucumber··on Right-wing extremist violence is more frequent and deadly than leftwing violence
Nothing in this article the declares one side "the winner" - it seems to be aimed at the government's cynical attempt to vilify "the left".
WastedCucumber··on US Government seeks deportation of Mahmoud Khalil (again)
This time, ordered by a judge.
WastedCucumber··on Syria: Israel Forcibly Displaces Villagers in Occupied South
Nothing good can come of this.
WastedCucumber··on What Is Man, That Thou Art Mindful of Him?
This is a funny but ineffective strawman° argument. On the other hand, it's given me inspiration for a test - an AI is conscious when it responds to a tricky question with "Brother stop annoying me, why you got all these dumb questions, what's your problem? I got shit to do, man. How'd you even get this number?"

° Actually I'm not sure if this is really a strawman, but it sure seems fallacious when (1) the creators/promoters of AI are equated with divinity and (2) the mistakes of humans are equated with the failings of LLM's, without qualification or citation.

WastedCucumber··on Has Culture Overtaken Genes in Human Evolution?
> Now some scientists claim in a new paper that culture has actually overtaken genetics as the leading force shaping human evolution, marking a major shift. [The scientists] argue that our cultural practices now spread faster than our genes can, allowing us to quickly adapt and problem-solve.

Wasn't this pretty clear for a while now? Like, at least sometime around when Richard Dawkins coined the word "meme", at the latest?

> Waring and Wood also suggest that as culture becomes increasingly important to human survival and reproduction, we will evolve to become even more group-oriented and group-dependent, potentially changing the human condition entirely. If this happens, we will become societal “superorganisms” that adapt through cultural change, they suggest.

This, on the other hand, sounds less settled and more interesting.

WastedCucumber··on Ben and Jerry's co-founder quits, accusing Unilever of silencing social mission
Sounds like Unilever's communication was half baked, and now Jerry isn't feeling so cherry (garcia) anymore... I hope they work it out before the whole operation turns into phish food.
WastedCucumber··on Slow social media
That's been my experience with BeReal as well. I seldom see posts from people I'm close with, and so I post less as well, and presumably that contributes to a similar feeling for other friends of mine.

In fact, these days, I only post in it so that I can record the moment, to add it to the record of fotos which are convenient and fun to look back through.

WastedCucumber··on Ant queen lays eggs that hatch into two species
> Interspecies mating is known in a few ant species, where the sperm of a queen’s own species can produce larvae that become new queens but not sterile workers. The queens have solved this challenge by also mating with males of another species to produce workers

That's wild, explains the whole point of why the cloning is necessary, and leaves me with unanswered questions. Most of all - why??? That seems like a huge weakness!

WastedCucumber··on Waymo has received our pilot permit allowing for commercial operations at SFO
This rings less like some missing key points, and more like an entire, comprehensive traffic strategy. I'm not really sure what the point is meant to elaborate on. Maybe something like "Self driving cars in themselves wouldn't solve traffic, but well designed, purpose-built AV's combined with surge pricing and (when necessary, depending on the location and journey) trains/subways could do it." Did I understand you correctly?
WastedCucumber··on Show HN: Pooshit – Sync local code to remote Docker containers
Dumb question, out of real curiosity - is the double fecal pun deliberate?
WastedCucumber··on New AI hype "Our language models are so 'conscious' we need to give them rights"
Well it's certainly a marketing move. I'm not convinced that it's clever.
WastedCucumber··on [dead]
To anyone considering watching this, it's really just a eulogy. I'm not sure when, if ever, the creator ever actually talks about accountability.
WastedCucumber··on Ireland will not participate in Eurovision if Israel takes part
If a state attacks, just for example, civilian hospitals (which typically do not contain valid military targets) then, in my view, the burden of proof lies on the attacking state.

Leaving aside, of course, the fact that attacking a civilian hospital, even one that has some military targets in it (say wounded combatants), would also certainly mean killing or injuring many invalid targets, and at that point you should really provide not just evidence of a military target but also evidence that you couldn't attack the target in any other way and that the target is valuable enough to justify the deaths of innocent people.

Which Israel has not done, and really, can't do. Because there really aren't many targets worth bombing a hospital for.

WastedCucumber··on Ireland will not participate in Eurovision if Israel takes part
Well, we can also leave North Korea out of the Eurovision Song Contest because it's not part of Europe.
