Vvector··on The West's historic drought is threatening hydropower at Hoover Dam
The measurements given are from sea level. The deadpool height of 895ft (above sea level) is the output level, where the water dumps downstream. The intakes have to be above this height.
Vvector··on New Arizona law makes it illegal to film within 8 feet of police
C. this section does not establish a right or authorize any person to make a video recording of law enforcement activity.
Vvector··on New Arizona law makes it illegal to film within 8 feet of police
> ...only applies to officers who are questioning, arresting, etc.

and the vague "enforcing the law". The fear is that the bad actors will always claim they were enforcing the law.

====================== For the purposes of this section, "law enforcement activity" means any of the following:

1. Questioning a suspicious person.

2. Conducting an arrest, issuing a summons or enforcing the law.

3. Handling an emotionally disturbed or disorderly person who is exhibiting abnormal behavior.

Vvector··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Thomas - "...in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell. ... we have a duty to “correct the error” established in those precedents"

Griswold - contraceptives

Lawrence - same-sex sexual relations

Obergefell - same-sex marriage

That's a big distortion of the article. You left out the first line of the paragraph "When using the average global energy supply...". That is calculating the CO2 from coal and gas plants to generate the electricity.

The very next paragraph says that when recharging on renewables, "the breakeven is just over 30,000 miles (48,280 km)". That's under three years for most people. We are not there yet, but great progress is being made.

Vvector··on How Dwarf Fortress is built
I've followed DF since 2010. Tarn treats his game more like a hobby than a business. Of course, that is his prerogative, and maybe his objective.

Vvector··on Planting trees “doesn't make any sense” in the fight against climate change
From the article: "You plant the forest but you don't start seeing carbon retention and sequestration happening for at least 10 years after they're planted, so there's a long lag time in doing that"

Maybe we should have planted those trees 10 years ago? And 10-20 years from now, will we be wondering why we didn't plant more trees now?

Vvector··on Why Teslas Keep Striking Parked Firetrucks and Police Cars
Radar detects stationary objects just fine.

From my understanding, the problem is the software doesn't know if that radar object is a car or a sign or an overpass. So it assumes that moving objects are cars, and makes a good guess at stationary objects. Occasionally when it is wrong, there would be unusual braking for signs, or just plowing into stationary cars.

Vvector··on The Texas Power Grid Is Hanging on by Its Fingernails
> the population has gone up a lot

Texas is growing ~1.5% annually over the last 10 years (15.6% for 10 years). This is all expected, it's not a surprise. And Texas is expected to grow to 40-50m by 2050. The power companies have access to the same info. It's ridiculous to blame the low capacity on population growth.

The real issue is that it is "unprofitable" to build spare capacity that will only be used 4-5 days a year. "population growth" is just an excuse.

Vvector··on Leap seconds: Causing bugs even when they don’t happen
Monday 13:30 and Monday 14:30 are now a week apart for you. But for someone in the next timezone, it is 1 hour apart.

Basically you are replacing Time Zones with Day-of-Week Zones.

Vvector··on Leap seconds: Causing bugs even when they don’t happen
What about leap milliseconds? There are plenty of applications that need millisecond accuracy.
Vvector··on Leap seconds: Causing bugs even when they don’t happen

So when does Monday start? 14:00 UTC in your location?

Vvector··on It doesn't take much public creativity to stand out as a job candidate
Can you clarify what you mean here? I would argue that any decent programmer could hack out a sorting routine, without having the code memorized.

If you cannot write a binary search routine from scratch, how can you be expected to solve much bigger problems?

Vvector··on It doesn't take much public creativity to stand out as a job candidate
> Nobody is writing binary searches in their day-to-day jobs

But in an interview situation, they cannot give you a three week task. Like FizzBuzz, a binary search is a simple task that can be done during an interview. They are not testing your ability to write a binary search. They are testing you on your ability to implement a function, given specific requirements.

Vvector··on NTSB: Tesla Model S in Crash Couldn't Have Been Using Autopilot
Waymo believes that the the roads need to be fully 3d mapped, with crosswalks, street lights and signs before their car can autopilot safely on it. More mapping will happen if/when the AI autopilot is ready.
Vvector··on Writing books is not really a good idea
> I do also think that the expectation/standard of a $100k/year salary is a bit high.

Agreed. Most writers do it because they love writing, not because they expect $100k/year. The money comes after the success. I wish her luck

Vvector··on Apple Now Selling More M1 Macs Than Intel-Based Models, Says Tim Cook
AMD Ryzen 7 5800U - 15/25 watts TDP

Apple M1 - 10 watts TDP

If the numbers are accurate, then it is close. However, each company measures TDP in different ways. Plus AMD can boost to 30W for short periods of time. Obviously the boost is good when you need it. The big question, how does this affect battery consumption?

That said, AMD's biggest issue is supply. I don't know if it is supply issues from TSMC, or component issues with the OEMs. But it is nearly impossible to buy a 5800u.

Vvector··on Neighbour manages to pollute the 2.4 ghz spectrum with his 120 IoT devices
If you install in-wall cat6 it’ll probably be obsolete by the end of the decade.

No. Most devices will still work just fine on Cat 5e for another 10-20 years, running at 1gbps. Cat 6a, running at 10gbps, will be fine for residential for another 25-30 years.

Putting fiber in the walls is an expensive overkill. If you are worried about future proofing, just install conduit with cat 6a.
