History in a nutshell: did consulting in the 80's, independent online database consulting in the 90's, lost my shirt in the early 00's and switched to technical translation and am doing fine, thanks. Lately exploring agricultural robotics in Puerto Rico, which is about as blue-sky a venture as it is possible to imagine, but the weather agrees with me.

[Note in 2018: I guess some of the weather was less agreeable. I'm currently putting a roof back on the house. ¡Puerto Rico se levanta!]

Vivtek··on New Covid variant BA.2 detected in at least 40 different countries
So safe, in fact, that more people are dying in Puerto Rico this week, due to the omicron spike, than at any earlier point in the pandemic.

This has always been my problem with Duolingo. You get a streak going, forget it two days running because you're busy with work or the dog has to go to the vet or the kid needs taking to the airport - and bam, 80 days irretrievably gone.

When this happens, I set the whole thing aside for a year, every time, even though I shouldn't.

For anybody that needs it, you can toggle a colorblind mode in the gear-icon setup screen. I was very confused until I realized I couldn't tell whether my correct-but-out-of-place letters weren't actually in the right place.
Vivtek··on Ask HN: News site that provides world updates only when relevant?
I've always wanted to see (or do) that - just something that you can check in on a year later and say, whatever happened to X from last year?
Vivtek··on Ask HN: Why is building Windows apps so complicated?
It's been a very long time indeed since I developed Windows-targeted software, but this rings true from what I remember. It always seemed to me that Microsoft wanted to give you just enough tools to imagine doing what you wanted to do, but not quite enough support to get it done - thereby encouraging the growth of a consultancy industry to get their feet into more corporate doors.

The tool dependency is a vendor lock-in strategy. "Just use the Microsoft tool" is always the answer. Weird.

Vivtek··on Ask HN: Why is building Windows apps so complicated?
No, in doing so they expected the IDE to continue to function as a build tool even if the programmer is using a text editor that works for them.

Rust really only affects sungrown arabica. We've got some rust on our own (shadegrown) trees, but if they're healthy and happy and not too hot, they stay ahead of the fungus pretty handily.

If you're just after caffeine, though, robusta has more caffeine than arabica.

The downside is that robusta needs pollinators and arabica doesn't - so you're damned either way as the century wears on. You'll probably need to learn to like excelsa.

Vivtek··on How to build a second brain as a software developer
I use a sloppy meld of Zettelkasten and PARA for this very reason. I used to get nervous about the subject ontology, and the link-to-anywhere aspect of ZK's tags fixed that for me. Plus having a unique ZK tag on every file means I can move subdirectories around to suit what I'm working on at the moment without any links breaking.
Vivtek··on The most impressive linguistic feat I’ve ever seen
It's pretty common on Twitter if you've got more to say than fits in a single tweet. There are even tools to let you manage it (i.e. write a thing and break it up and post individual tweets in order).

Sometimes you'll see them numbered like /1, or if the author knows how many there will be in advance, 1/13, 2/13, etc.

It's not uncommon to put a separate link in many of the individual tweets in the series.

This reminds me of a similar homophonic rendition, in which the French actually makes some sense (https://www.blueridgejournal.com/poems/mots06-etquirit.htm) - I actually first saw this in the Whole Earth Catalog, of all places.

Vivtek··on Warning Signals for Collapse of The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
Brazil is well within their rights to say, "Fuck you. Pay me."
Vivtek··on Warning Signals for Collapse of The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
It's almost like Brazil is switching from a crop (oxygen) which pays nothing to another (beef - or literally any other use of that land) which will.

If the richer nations cared about the Amazon rainforest, we'd pay rent on it.

Stop immigration?

How do people moving around on the planet make a difference? Especially since immigration moves people from more impoverished places, where they are more likely to have more kids, to less impoverished places, where they are less likely?

Vivtek··on Candide – Identify Plants with a Photo
Well, it gets easy ones pretty well - misidentified arabica coffee as robusta but did at least get "coffee", and identified a mango tree - but tricky ones (the various weed trees on our farm) are even more hopeless than my own efforts.

To be fair, it's probably for houseplants more than anything. On the other hand, half the stuff growing on a tropical farm is houseplants.

Wish there were more information about their model.

Do you literally just do this deduplication with your brain alone? Or do you have some kind of clever indexing scheme and, if the latter, have you ever written it up? Because that would be interesting to read about.

I live in Adjuntas and no amount of cats would eat this many frogs - fortunately!

They tend to quiet down during dry spells, so our rain last week has made things sound much nicer.

Vivtek··on Ask HN: Would issue “bounties” make contributing to open source more appealing?
I keep telling myself this is something I'd enjoy doing - but then I do something to scratch my own itches instead and live without the bounty.

There's https://gitcoin.co/explorer, too, and it's always got new jobs posted and people doing them.

Vivtek··on Ask HN: Has Google search been worse at finding information lately?
It feels like maybe the past year.
Vivtek··on Ask HN: Has Google search been worse at finding information lately?
Yes. It's great for finding commercial products and absolutely terrible for anything else.

It's making my research for technical translation a lot harder recently.

Plenty of people in America think that having your kids put in refrigerated cages is a perfectly normal and justifiable consequence of your commission of a misdemeanor.

Just threatening them temporarily with violent death is nothing compared with that.

But look, this is exactly because Spotify/Amazon/Netflix are responding to reality and providing media at a price point that reflects it.

That's a desired outcome.
