VieElm··on UBlock Origin
Sounds like you've come up with a nice comfortable rationalization for creating bad experiences for your users. How convenient for you. You don't seem to think very highly of your site's visitors.

> Most (but not all) users today feel entitled to content, games, music, etc for free and get mad when it isn't granted to them and turn up their noses at things like ads that support the content for the price they're willing to pay (free).

This is an obvious generalization and an opinion you have. People who block ads do so because ads have been and continue to be annoying, exploitive, invasive and vectors for viruses. I am not sorry I block them, and you're not going to make me feel bad for making decisions about what my computer does or doesn't do.

A recurring monthly payment doesn't track my activity does it. It just tracks that I've paid for something. Many sites offer PayPal so there's no personal information conveyed at all.

I pay for a lot of Twitch subs. I am currently subbed to like 7 channels. I've also payed for the NYTimes and Washington Post through Amazon's payment system. I've paid for Ars Technica. I pay for Pandora. I pay for Reddit gold. I also buy skins and mounts in free to play games like Heroes of the Storm and TF2.

I pay lots. Do I meet your approval now?

VieElm··on UBlock Origin
This isn't true, I'm perfectly willing to pay for content. I just don't want ads and I don't want to be tracked. Thanks to browser extensions I don't have to no matter how much that hurts your feelings. You say I'm entitled but it's actually you who isn't entitled to control how the software works on my computer.

I'm perfectly willing to support business models that aren't terrible. Perhaps you might also consider users not wanting to install rootkits, spyware and adware to support content entitled? It's the same, it's a shitty experience people don't want.

VieElm··on UBlock Origin
> uBlock blocks piwik all the same

Good. I don't want to contribute to your analytics. I don't want ads. I just want to browse the web without being tracked. I don't care if that means you can't pay for your site, other sites will spring up that can without annoying users with ads and without tracking them.

Editorialized title should probably be renamed.
VieElm··on A YouTube built for gamers
They don't make it easy, broadcasters just add a link in their profile. There's no information transmitted to PayPal about the donation being for Twitch broadcasting. In fact a lot of broadcaster use third party tools, tools not made by Twitch or PayPal, for the donation system so that it updates in their stream and chat.
VieElm··on Plans for Redis 3.2
Aphyr has a great post about Redis:

https://aphyr.com/posts/283-call-me-maybe-redis

Recommends using it on a single server or if distributed as a cache or for data that can tolerate write losses.

VieElm··on A YouTube built for gamers
Twitch doesn't make any money from streamer tips as most of that is done through a link to PayPal. Twitch has no tip system.

Popular streamers like Lirik have said they much prefer getting a subscription through Twitch than a donation as it's much more reliable. Some streamers like Summit1G probably does make way more money through tips because of their personality some people just throw money at them, but again none of that goes to Twitch.

Here's a similar case where a writer left her son in her car for a few minutes in a parking lot at a store:

VieElm··on Blackberry might switch to Android as OS
I doubt your Passport will see an Android update even if they did this. Someone might have an unofficial Android build for the Passport though.
VieElm··on Inverting Binary Trees Considered Harmful
You can ask the interviewer to clarify what the question is or what the result should look like. You should always ask for more details ask if you don't understand the question, and sometimes people ask in a vague way to see if the candidate will ask for clarification for better or for worse. It will not make you look stupid.

The simple action of saying "I don't know what you mean by X" or "I don't understand what X is" builds up your credibility, not reduce it. People who aren't afraid to ask questions demonstrate credibility because when they do say they know something you know they probably actually do.

I have learned so much from not being afraid to say "What is X" when someone starts talking to me about something and assume I know what it is already.

Nobody has ever laughed at me for this. Even if they did, it wouldn't bother me, because I'd rather I look silly and then learn what it is than to pretend I know and then actually end up not learning what it was someone was talking to me about.

Finally if they did think you should have known what the topic was you'd rather they know that about you while they're evaluating you not after you're hired and end up in over your head. This is a really unlikely scenario. These interviews are not so much about what you know, but how you solve problems.

VieElm··on Inverting Binary Trees Considered Harmful
To change the nodes to point the other way around. So if the left edge of N1 points to N2 and the right edge points to N3 you make it so that N1's left edge points to N3 and the right edge points to N2. It's a trivial problem of changing pointers around. It's like 4 or 5 lines of code if you write a recursive function.
VieElm··on Apple Music and Labels Investigated in Two States
Well she made public comments about it. She basically said something about if people value the music they like they should pay for it. So it wasn't just the label, Taylor Swift was involved.
VieElm··on It's the Future
As an engineer I feel an obligation to know about these things and how they work. It might be appropriate for my work. For my own projects I am just going to start out with a Django or Meteor app and if I'm lucky enough to have to worry about scale I'll have some idea of what to do next.
VieElm··on It's the Future
Well these technologies are there to help bring Google type infrastructure for businesses that need it. If you're running a CRUD app just fine on Heroku you don't need to do any of this and you shouldn't.

When your availability starts having problems or your data is getting too much for one machine, you start having problems of scale. Where you are in terms of scaling issues should lead you to the next iteration of technology required to keep your service up.

Starting out of the gates with that one idea you're not sure anyone will be interested in? Just stick to deploying something fast and not worry about Google style scaling solutions.

VieElm··on A Constructive Look at TempleOS
Someone should start a Kickstarter for a professionally done documentary of Terry Davis and TempleOS. He's such an interesting person. I'd watch it. It would probably be an amazing documentary if done well and assuming Terry Davis would be OK with it.
VieElm··on Hyper – Hypervisor-agnostic Docker engine
That's a serious bash script. That's the craziest bash script I've ever seen. It's like a full program. It is terrifying.
VieElm··on Harry Potter in Ancient Greek
I've read the Count of Monte Cristo in English, which is basically my native language and I wouldn't be embarrassed to say that my skills aren't good enough to even read that book's English translation. It's not just the English, it's all the book's references to previous literature, ancient and otherwise, as well as French history.
VieElm··on GitHub streak: End-game and post-mortem
Using a lack of GitHub contributions as a way to disqualify candidates sounds like a really bad idea. Does anyone do that? Seems like a strawman argument.
VieElm··on Fantasy must shake off the tyranny of the mega-novel
If anyone is interested in a great single volume fantasy book, I recommend Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. It's a very good book.
VieElm··on Fish shell
> I had to switch away from fish as well because of its lack of vi bindings.

No you didn't. I use vim and fish just fine. Just put this in your .vimrc:

VieElm··on SpaceX Dragon CRS-6 Launch Webcast
Well it's well documented that what happens is that the system ends up being gamed. For example managers hire people to fire so they don't have to fire the people they've friended. See Microsoft Stack Ranking.

VieElm··on SpaceX Dragon CRS-6 Launch Webcast
You guys regularly fire some portion (3% to 5%) of your employees every year yes? I love what you're doing and I'd love to be part of it, but the press doesn't make it out like a great place to be an employee. It makes sense I guess, given the risk involved in launching rockets, but this kind of work environment is probably not for everyone.

Is there some way to opt out of these studies on Facebook? I don't use these services to be studied.

Techcrunch is usually accessed via unencrypted HTTP as a quick search for Techcrunch will show: Google offers the HTTP URL. Techcrunch is hosted on Wordpress VIP[1] which explains the SSL cert you get. In other words, nothing to see here.
