Your claims:
- The true origin of COVID-19 is known and being kept a secret [citation needed]
- It’s unreasonable to assume a pandemic can be caused by a natural occurring genetic mutation [citation needed]
- Global knowledge that the virus came from a Chinese lab (accidentally? intentionally?) would cause a world war [citation needed]
Blaming the fact that you don’t have any friends or romantic partners or a “life in this city” on remote working is absolutely absurd. Relying on a corporate office to bring you those things is most likely going to end in disappointment. Get a job that doesn’t demand your entire wakeful life on this earth and find some hobbies you can share with people where you’re not constrained by the weirdness of office politics and culture.
Intermittent fasting contributes nothing to weight loss beyond the psychological effect, which may result in calorie restriction. This is the latest science.
Absolutely ridiculous to call this a “meme”. It is the most basic fact about how to lose weight. Stop eating altogether and see what happens (spoilers: you’ll lose weight as your body devours itself because your body needs calories to operate)
Can’t be that weird considering that the vast majority of the first world doesn’t partake in the death penalty. Perhaps you are the one with a strange take on justice.
I don’t know, if we were to go off of “total number of innocent civilians murdered globally” for establishing moral high ground, Iran has done less harm than the United States.
I think the fact that pg himself is frustrated and pausing his Twitter presence is evidence enough that this is not awesome for everyone except those in the “woke bubble”. Paul Graham is very obviously not a “woke” guy. You are very obviously inside an “anti-woke” bubble yourself if this nonsense is your main takeaway from Musk’s tactics as Twitter CEO.
No, the parent comment is totally fine. The technique is indeed new and yes will be applied in the treatment of other diseases in the future. Don’t know why you went to open with a contrarian tone.
I agree that race should ultimately have no part of it, but that’s not the reality we live in. Systemic racism is real in America, and people are disadvantaged from birth by the color of their skin. I don’t know how to completely fix something so deeply engrained in American society, but taking steps ensure more equitable employment outcomes for people fundamentally disadvantaged by the color of their skin (no, not white) is at least something.
I also agree with your general point that in general, disadvantaged people (eg poor white people) should also get some kind of boost and not be left in the dust, there just needs to be some nuance and acknowledgment of the systemic racism that applies to others as well.
Yeah honestly this community is incredibly disappointing at times. This is barebones basic stuff to try to make America a little more equitable as a society. In response we get a gnashing of teeth about how anti-racism measures are actually racist… it’s like I’m reading trash comments from a right-wing rag instead of a website to discuss advances in technology.
You’re arguing for equality over equity. The reason our societies have moved towards encouraging equitable outcomes is because the equality approach like you suggest doesn’t work. It doesn’t work because it ignores inherent systemic biases and racism built into many of our systems. The point is to try to help people who are otherwise marginalized because of their skin colour, disability, etc. This is basic stuff.
Spending many, many billions of dollars on revamping public infrastructure for an unproven, nascent technology with functionally zero current adoption sounds absurd to me. Good luck convincing governments and the people that hold the purse strings.
A media relations department is a savvy thing to have in order to keep your brand’s reputation healthy. An order backlog stretching into 2023 doesn’t mean much for the next decade of Tesla. Public opinion is important for sales. I’m not going to claim to speak for the car-buying masses, but my impression of Tesla (false marketing claims, shoddy workmanship, bad working conditions, etc) is bad - you’d think a competently run company would want to try to shift that narrative.
Lots of effusive praise in this thread. When I heard the news, I cheered, and felt giddy for a little bit, then the feeling subsided. I’m Canadian and have been forced to observe this bizarre institution my whole life. Seeing any bit of the monarchy and the British empire chip away feels good.
People have been writing like this for like 25 years. You see it on subcultures all over the internet. HN is a bastion of formal pedantry, so it’s a bit more uncommon here, but it’s been a thing for a long time.
You could also become some kind of “hate researcher” if you wanted to. Pick a group of people you don’t like(ethnic, socio, political, whatever), and start hammering out publications on their IQ, epidemiology, sociopolitical beliefs, etc. Maybe do a bit of P-hacking to make the deleterious stuff really pop out. Eventually you’ll have a nice corpus of literature out there framing your target group as stupid, disease ridden and ignorant.
The second sentence is a statement of fact in the world of genetics, phylogeny, and taxonomy. Your criticism of it tells me you are not adequately knowledgeable about these areas of science to participate in this conversation at the level required.
