VerifiedReports··on Compact disc story (1998)
Similar story! The first disc (and song) I heard was "Let's Dance," David Bowie.

I have hundreds of discs, but only have Let's Dance on vinyl.

I also have the second pop digital recording ever, The Nightly by Donald Fagen, only on vinyl. I use it to show people how good records can sound.

I'm glad I bought and kept so much music when I did, because now the labels have destroyed everything with dynamic (not data) compression. It's disgusting. Now that everyone has dirt-cheap access to pristine recording & playback technology, music sounds like absolute shit because some suits thought it needed to sound "louder."

It's possibly one of the biggest but least-understood crimes against art in all of history.

VerifiedReports··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
No, it doesn't. First, I don't know what you mean by "HTML form." It's not HTML at all.

Second: If the formatting codes are going to be ignored by all the viewing applications, why are they in the document in the first place?

Every time this comes up, someone floats this weird "but all you need is a text viewer" argument... indicating that Markdown is pointless.

VerifiedReports··on Anthropic drops flagship safety pledge
Just like OpenAI dropped the "open" but kept the bullshit name?
VerifiedReports··on Looks like it is happening
Anything containing a single descriptive term. But don't you dare criticize a headline here.
VerifiedReports··on Looks like it is happening
They ARE the rule on HN. If you criticize bullshit titles like this, you'll be downvoted and shadow-banned.

Ask me how I know.

VerifiedReports··on Looks like it is happening
But HN loves them. How dare you call one out!
VerifiedReports··on I'm helping my dog vibe code games
Prompt-code. Not "vibe code."
VerifiedReports··on Emulated Windows 3.11 in the Browser
Not on mobile, though.
VerifiedReports··on Show HN: VectorNest responsive web-based SVG editor
Thanks for the reply. I can't think of a situation where I'd just have SVGs hanging out on my phone, though.
VerifiedReports··on Emulated Windows 3.11 in the Browser
I'm not really complaining; just harking back to a shitty time that is, on some commercial sites, threatening to return. Especially as Apple finally allows Chrome on iOS, eroding the main bastion against it: Safari.
VerifiedReports··on Closing this as we are no longer pursuing Swift adoption
Yes, that's what I said.
VerifiedReports··on Emulated Windows 3.11 in the Browser
"For the best experience, use Chrome."

That's not Windows 3.11. That kind of thing is circa 2000, and a state none of us should want the Web to return to.

VerifiedReports··on I verified my LinkedIn identity. Here's what I handed over
The link isn't working, but anyone handing over unnecessary data to LinkedIn (AKA Facebook Pro) is probably too gullible to be online safely at this point.
VerifiedReports··on A word processor from 1990s for Atari ST/TOS is still supported by enthusiasts
Word's outline mode is a sham. You can't export the text in the outline format. Stupid AF.

Word used to be a great product. Today it's a shambolic testament to incompetent design and dereliction.

With all respect: Why would one want a drawing tool to be Web-based?
VerifiedReports··on Closing this as we are no longer pursuing Swift adoption
I started using it around 2018. After being reasonably conversant in Objective-C, I fully adopted Swift for a new iOS app and thought it was a big improvement.

But there's a lot of hokey, amateurish stuff in there... with more added all the time. Let's start with the arbitrary "structs are passed by value, classes by reference." And along with that: "Prefer structs over classes."

But then: "Have one source of truth." Um... you can't do that when every data structure is COPIED on every function call. So now what? I spent so much time dicking around trying to conform to Swift's contradictory "best practices" that developing became a joyless trudge with glacial progress. I finally realized that a lot of the sources I was reading didn't know WTF they were talking about and shitcanned their edicts.

A lot of the crap in Swift and SwiftUI remind me of object orientation, and how experienced programmers arrived at a distilled version of it that kept the useful parts and rejected dumb or utterly impractical ideas that were preached in the early days.

VerifiedReports··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
Yes, downvote facts.
VerifiedReports··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
"What had promised to be a boom to workplace productivity.."

No. BOON. A BOON to workplace productivity.

And then the writer doubles down on the error by proving it was not a typo, ending the sentence with "...was for several years a bust."

VerifiedReports··on AI is destroying open source, and it's not even good yet
Nope. It just means made-up... like your "definition."

Or were you in a fugue state and hallucinating?

VerifiedReports··on AI is destroying open source, and it's not even good yet
"a writer used hallucinated quotes"

No; FABRICATED quotes. We have a perfectly good, correct word for what's going on.

VerifiedReports··on Privilege is bad grammar
I don't know where this guy has worked, but I've never worked for anyone who communicates like an ignorant, lazy ass.

Also, while I find his criticism valid for having had indeed seen it, this is ironic: "how sloppy and unprofessional emails from executives looked like."

VerifiedReports··on LEDs Enter the Nanoscale, But efficiency hurdles challenge the smallest LEDs yet
The question is when mass-produced micro-LED TVs will finally arrive.
VerifiedReports··on uBlock filter list to hide all YouTube Shorts
And Google whines when people install ad-blockers. It's pathetic.

I was willing to watch ads. But then Google introduced NEVER-ENDING ads, when the program is interrupted frequently and will never return unless you herd it along periodically by clicking Skip. Screw you, Google. I'm cooking, with my hands covered with who knows what, and now I can't watch the program.

VerifiedReports··on Breaking the spell of vibe coding
Step 1. Stop calling it "vibe coding."

VerifiedReports··on History of UHF Television: TV Above Channel 13 (2024)
Late '70s through the '80s, which is consistent with your citation here.

Who the hell downvotes a first-hand observation? Toxic losers who should go back to Reddit.

VerifiedReports··on History of UHF Television: TV Above Channel 13 (2024)
"channels above 13 almost no one could receive"

This is a weird assertion. In major cities, as far as I know, everyone could receive them. And out in the boonies (rural Indiana, for example) there were ONLY UHF channels.

VerifiedReports··on Microsoft Outlook thinks Microsoft Azure emails are spam
Fair enough!
VerifiedReports··on Billing can be bypassed using a combo of subagents with an agent definition
Premium models of what? None of that is in the headline, where it belongs.

No idea what you're calling a "ticket."

But .Net goes back way farther than 15 years.

I attended one of the evangelist roadshows Microsoft put on when they announced .Net, back in the late '90s. We were developing Windows applications and using an SQL Server/ASP back-end.

We walked out of there saying WTF WAS all that? It was terribly communicated. The departing attendees were shaking their heads in bafflement.

I'm impressed that it has stood the test of time and seems to be well-done; I've never had occasion to use it.

But man... that stupid name.
