But you're sure I'm "angry?" Maybe your point of view is skewed toward apathy.

When a manufacturer deliberately creates a perpetual pain in the ass with anti-consumer actions such as deleting the headphone jacks from media-centric devices, it should be no surprise that self-respecting consumers will condemn that move. If you find it surprising that people are annoyed by such actions, I don't know what to tell you.

No, because their icons can simply be collapsed into a disclosure control.

I disagree with this one. If a VPN is important, I want to see that it is still connected and hasn't crashed.

That's the standard apologist response to ANY defect you point out in anything, or any question they don't know the answer to but still want to bloviate about.

One thing's for sure: No application should be allowed to have a menubar item without a ToolTip. WTF, that should have been obvious from day one.

At the moment, I have 11 of them on my system (not counting the clock), a mix of third-party and Apple ones. NOT ONE of them has a ToolTip.

Even worse, if you click on them, the resulting menu does not show the name of the owning application. This too should be forced. For example, I unfortunately have to run Microsoft Teams, and its toolbar menu gives you no indication of what application it belongs to.

"Courage"

The pissing and moaning about "bezels" is cacophonous in certain echo chambers.

It's sad to see Apple taking cues from a minority group of infantile users, but that's one way we got here.

VerifiedReports··on Tailscale's new macOS home
That's not really defensible as an excuse, especially considering Apple's grooming of users to believe that they never need to quit applications.

All Apple had to do was add a "more" indicator at the end of the area, at the very least. Or... to give all applications' entries equal footing, collapse them all into a disclosure control once there are too many to show.

But no... once again, a simple and fair solution eludes Apple's "designers."

Yeah, because I want to junk up my car with all that crap. You're just admitting that your "thin, elegant" Apple product becomes a Christmas tree of dongles to make it practical.
VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
Then you obviously don't do much work with it.
VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
It's just like Apple to create a problem and then have to implement an overly-complicated and flawed "solution."
VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
Then they're not paying attention to how little of the pad they actually use, and the irritating-as-hell spurious presses that can cost you several minutes (or more) of work.

There's nothing like filling out a form (or comment) on a Web page to have it suddenly reload or back-page, deleting everything you entered.

VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
The Surface is a tablet.

I don't know one person who has a touchscreen computer. It's a dumb way to work: not only impractical because your finger is too crude of a pointing device and your hand blocks your view of what you're trying to manipulate, but also uncomfortable to wave your arms around in front of you all day... pushing the lid of your laptop away to boot.

VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
Not while you're charging.
VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
You say that now. And yet Apple now forces you to use shitty Bluetooth headphones to listen to its most popular music player.
VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
And then everyone will realize that it's stupid shit, like the embarrassing emoji bar on Jony Ive's MacBook "Pro."
VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
It's totally pointless, because the trackpad is already a touch device... and you use it to manipulate a precise cursor that doesn't block your view of what you're working on.
VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
They'll say it sucks ass, and they'll be right.

Touchscreen computers have failed for a reason.

Then again... so did "transparent" UI, which Apple just exhumed.

VerifiedReports··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
And here we are, and the Pencil STILL doesn't work on the defectively oversized trackpads on Apple laptops.

So... we're talking about more than one blunder here.

What an absurd attitude. The gymnastics to avoid circular inclusions alone are something nobody should be giving a thought to in the 2000s.

"But headers are perfectly fine to deal with and have been for decades and decades!"

I would have thought this was a joke... but your follow-up indicates otherwise.

So what are you going to float next? "So what if people broke their arms hand-cranking their cars to start them! People did it for years, so we shouldn't move to electric starters! Or automatic chokes!"

"And these electric ice boxes are for the birds! Speaking of which: People flying through the air in machines? POPPYCOCK!"

Thanks. It's been a long time since I started a C++ project, and I've never set up any build chain in Visual Studio or Xcode other than the default.

VerifiedReports··on C++26 is done: ISO C++ standards meeting Trip Report
As long as programmers still have to deal with header files, all of this is lipstick on a pig.
