Velox··on Apple Store display in London
I happened to see this in Bellevue, Washington today as well. I was in a rush though so I didn't get to stop and look at how it worked. I actually assumed it was just fishing line. It served the correct purpose though of catching my eye in a store where I normally just walk straight past.
Velox··on New Machine Can See Bones, Organs in Stunning Detail
The colours provide contrast. It makes it much easier for a doctor to find the parts they are interested in as quickly as possible. Not to mention the fact that doctors aren't always interested in the tiniest imperfections and may be looking for large changes.

When you have things segemented out and coloured, it is also much easier to view the object, be it an organ, blood vessel, etc. in 3 dimensions, which is something that is very useful.

Admittedly, they can get in the way sometimes, but that's why it is an optional feature.

Velox··on Plague
What is the definition of "nearby users" in this context? It seems like someone can start something in Seattle for example, and then only 1 other person has seen it, but they are in France?
Velox··on Teenage Haskell
At the University of Edinburgh, the first programming class we do in first year is an introduction to functional programming, which uses Haskell as the main language (it helps that Phil Wadler is the lecturer). Lots of students take to it much more easily than Java which is taught in the following semester. It definitely seems that viewing Haskell as a "hard" language is a product of an imperative programming education.
Velox··on eBay user data for sale?
Just because there is no evidence doesn't mean that it should be ignored. Lots of things don't yet have evidence but it is still worth letting people know so that they are ready to take the appropriate action when the time comes.

Let's face it. Lots of posts on HN are pure speculation but they don't get buried. In this case, leaving it up won't do any harm? If it's not real, then no problem. You may have convinced a few people that they should change their passwords though, but that is a good thing. If it is real, then people will already have changed their passwords. It is win win.

Personally, I'm getting really sick of the mods deciding what news is and isn't relevant and/or suitable for me.

Velox··on Ask HN: I am looking for a server monitoring tool featured on HN

Velox··on Passwords for JetBlue accounts cannot contain a Q or a Z
What's the issue? They force a reset so there is no difference between giving a temporary password like this or a URL which is unique to them?
Velox··on Syntax highlighters are wrong
One of the main rants in this is about superfluous comments. I completely agree that comments which are superfluous should be removed. However all his examples are JavaDoc. Yes, in the code they are useless because of the variable declarations, however they are of great use in an IDE.
Velox··on Spouses of Some H-1B Visa Holders to Be Allowed to Work
Anyone want to explain what this is? It's a paywall and I'm not american so there is no way I'm paying for a subscription to it.
Velox··on Suggestion: Improve Hacker News algorithm to serve Europe better
If we want Europe to be served better, then disallowing articles behind paywalls would be the best option to make me happy. Most non-americans won't have a membership to the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times. That would make me much happier than an algorithm change. But the powers that be have stated that this just won't happen.
Velox··on OpenSSL CVE-2010-5298 / CVE-2014-0198
This doesn't seem all that important. There are numerous bugs around most software out there which can cause it to crash. It's not good, but it's also not the worst one out there.

If it was that bad, it would have been fixed earlier. It was reported first in 2010: https://rt.openssl.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=2167&user=gues...

It was also fixed a few weeks ago.

Edit: Just noticed that the openssl bug tracker passes the username and password in the URL. Oh dear...

Velox··on Seven People Who Hold the Keys to Worldwide Internet Security
Signing the key is the important part. Proving that the key was in fact created by the people it was supposed to be. (I think they key does have to be kept secure, which could be done by using a one time pad. Theoretically unbreakable.)
Velox··on Show HN: Google Music for Mac
They are not necessarily more insecure? And the great part about them is the fact that if an app goes rogue then its password can be revoked. Also, while they can access my data, they can't change data. No one can log in with an application specific password and steal my account.
Velox··on Javascript injection game
Interesting idea. Just goes to show I don't know nearly as much Javascript as I should considering I'm stuck on level 3.
Velox··on Tell HN: DuckDuckGo (ddg.gg) blocked in the UK by High Court(?)
I'm on Virgin and it has been blocked for me. duckduckgo.com still works as normal however.
