Vektorweg··on Bill Gates warns on future disease epidemic
This article is more about the man than about what he does. There are lots of people who try to stop diseases and epidemics. The difference is, its Bill Gates and its posted on a tech-heavy news site.
Vektorweg··on Bill Gates warns on future disease epidemic
I expected that. But I don't stop to say what needs to be said.

Its another topic in how far down-votes are a good idea. Somehow, its a populist regulation of communicating non-conform thoughts.

Vektorweg··on Bill Gates warns on future disease epidemic
He shouldn't have made his software closed source. Too many business men followed him, leading to a vast amount of bullshit software no one can easily relay on to make something better.

The free software culture slowly recovers. But we are still far away from the good old and worthy traditions for commercial software developers.

Vektorweg··on Bill Gates warns on future disease epidemic
I'm talking about the free software culture.
Vektorweg··on Bill Gates warns on future disease epidemic
Gates took wealth from many, many people and gave it to the few. It is the inversion of free software. You don't see how he hurt the society and how much more wealth could have been created without his decision.

I don't throw stones because of the mistakes someone made. I throw stones because of the lack of will or understanding why to fix the own mistake when he is capable of it.

Thats what the most crazy evil people in history said in their defense: in the end, it would have been peace -- the mass murdering dictators.

There are better ways to achieve a better living for everyone. No one needs to suffer or to die for that. The path is important.

Vektorweg··on Bill Gates warns on future disease epidemic
I have one question: is it right to destroy a whole culture just to be the good guy afterwards?
Vektorweg··on Bill Gates warns on future disease epidemic
Yes I know ... Hacker News / YC isn't the place to make aggressive jokes about proprietary software ... :/
Vektorweg··on Bill Gates warns on future disease epidemic
How about to try to cure the proprietary software disease?
Vektorweg··on The Pirate Party is now measured as the biggest political party in Iceland
Actually, to get something in german's pirate party program, there must be a 66% majority.

Hm. I never heard of blocks in the pirate party. Luckily, it seems that the core pirates are too liberal for that. Things could go wrong, but then we simply start a new party.

And yes, we must listen to everyone. Whatever troll it might be. You must listen them to tell them otherwise and to learn from them. It might be the only way a democracy can function well.

Vektorweg··on The Pirate Party is now measured as the biggest political party in Iceland
Yes, but they would then know, that they are stubborn. Actually, there are so many individual people in the pirate party because they think the pirate party is doing what the individual does. Teaching them otherwise makes a difference. But this requires lots of communication and since we all have digital dementia and are quick to bore, we better do this quick and often.

Fast communication is actually just a feature for the outer world to tell them, what we work for, in time. Too often it isn't clear what we stand for to a fresh topic. The media is complaining and the reader starts to think badly about us.

Vektorweg··on The Pirate Party is now measured as the biggest political party in Iceland
I think that diversity wouldn't be the problem, when liquid feedback would work. But communication in the PP is really slow relative to their tech based democratic goals. The process to get a clear statement is too slow.
Vektorweg··on Drawing Lines is Hard – an interactive look at GPU line rendering
I wrote some animated SVG's in the past. It was often slow but good enough for most tasks. Quality was/is browser-dependent, but it worked well in overall.

I'm not sure what people want to achieve. So, how well works Scalable Vector Graphics for you?

Vektorweg··on The right to fork code makes open source a breeding ground for innovation
Forking isn't worth much when the code is too difficult to change. Innovation depends also on extensibility.
Vektorweg··on Signs that you're a bad programmer (2012)
A troll you can argue with isn't a troll. Its just too easy to exclude people because of there non-conformism ...
Vektorweg··on Signs that you're a bad programmer (2012)
I guess no one understands sarcasm.
Vektorweg··on Signs that you're a bad programmer (2012)
Inability to comprehend pointers

Inability to determine the order of program execution

I don't think that pointers or mutable variables are important, when you are a pure functional or logic programmer.

Vektorweg··on InstaParse: Context-Free Grammars as Easy as Regular Expressions
The * or Kleene star describes a sequence of values from a specific set. A nice function name would be "many", like in Haskell's Parsec. In comparison between *, "Kleene_Star" and "many" is the meaning of the function, when named "many", is easy to imply without consulting the docs.
Vektorweg··on InstaParse: Context-Free Grammars as Easy as Regular Expressions
Thats why I usually don't point this out. Some people could get infected or something.
Vektorweg··on InstaParse: Context-Free Grammars as Easy as Regular Expressions
English is a common base. Not everyone understands Regex or enough about math. If you use Regex, some people might not be able to understand and change your Regex if necessary.

Well, most of the time, no one else needs to understand it ...

Vektorweg··on InstaParse: Context-Free Grammars as Easy as Regular Expressions
I usually don't point this out, but:

Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.

Like the issue with RegEx, its probably better to use nice English words in code to describe a problem solution, so that other people can understand it faster (before they get demotivated).

Vektorweg··on Using backtracking to undo transactions in Haskell
Sorry, i haven't checked in the last days.

I haven't seen exactly the same corresponding monad. But I would compare it with existing backtracking monads used for logic programming. My point is, that a backtracking monad in general is a well known concept. Your special point is the rollback, which isn't included in the monads i saw. I think that people, who worked with backtracking monads, know that they could implement a rollback if needed.

Vektorweg··on Xfce 4.12 released
we like to party!

Definitely. Love it.

Vektorweg··on Using backtracking to undo transactions in Haskell
Actually, the gold mine is monad transformer. There aren't many things you can do with monads (and the OP's one is nothing new). The real power is in the combination of monads.
Vektorweg··on Using backtracking to undo transactions in Haskell
Many Haskell books and tutorials tell what the "do" really does. People should read more.
Vektorweg··on My personal struggles with learning how to program
Well. There is a magic contingent of how much humans can know at a time. And the amount of time to learn nearly as much as an expert know is five years of hard learning (or better: good teaching). It's just a guess. I think, experts/programmer/whatever will unlearn sufficiently fast, that it doesn't matter much if he is an expert for 10 or 30 years.
Vektorweg··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
Theoretically, everything is related to each other. Practically, no.
Vektorweg··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
Scala keeps features for imperative and functional programming, which is one category too many, because they solve the same problem just different. Thats how Scala is supposed to work. Its impossible to remove an approach.
Vektorweg··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
Actually, the vast amount of features in C# isn't improving readability. But MS can't just throw out the bad half of features, which makes C# practically unimprovable. Scala has a similar problem.
Vektorweg··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
Peyton Jones and some other nice people work at Microsoft to improve Haskell, which is IMHO the right tool.
