Veelox··on Launch HN: Bottomless (YC W19) – Coffee Restocked with a Smart Scale
What I don't understand is why there is the monthly shipping subscription. As someone who has free coffee at work and only drinks coffee at home on the weekend it doesn't seem like it would be worth paying monthly shipping. I would much prefer to be able to choose between the monthly cost and a per bag cost.
Veelox··on Launch HN: Bottomless (YC W19) – Coffee Restocked with a Smart Scale
If you want to get VC funding, pick the one with the biggest market.

If you want to build a profitable business sooner rather than later. Figure out which 3 would give you the best marginal profit and choose the one you think you can execute best on.

Veelox··on US to build six nuclear power plants in India
>I think it's a large scale astroturfing effort by the nuclear industry

Just to be clear, you think that the nuclear industry is paying people to go on line and say positive things about nuclear power? Can I get some kind of source for this claim?

Veelox··on Widening Russia Money Laundering Scandal Hits European Banks
I am with you until you got to the nationalizing part. I don't know if that would be long term best for the country.
Veelox··on Google Employees Uncover Ongoing Work on Censored China Search
I still don't get what logic is used to arrive at the conclusion that Google deploying search in China should be stopped. Everyone I have seen simply assumes it.
Veelox··on Google Moves to Address Wage Equity, and Finds It’s Underpaying Many Men
Unfortunately I can no longer tell is this statement is meant in jest or not.
Veelox··on France Plans 5% Digital Tax as Governments Chase Internet Giants
To complicate the situation, a French citizen, living in Spain, the sole owner of a company incorporated in Ireland, buys software from an American company to run for a customer in Brazil.

Which country/countries should be able to tax the revenue?

Veelox··on Apple makes billions from Google Search each year
If they could not receive any kind of payment or kickback from any company I would give it a 70% chance they pick Google. As it stands, Apple knows that it can charge Google and Google knows its worth paying so they stay in the mutually beneficial relationship.
Veelox··on Why I quit a $500K job at Amazon to work for myself
The 40th percentile income in the US is $43.3k [0], with 126 million households [1], that comes out to about 50 million households that make less than $44k.

To put my feelings bluntly, get out of your bubble.

Its a great week to live in the Bay Area.
Veelox··on DeepMind StarCraft II Demonstration [video]
According to a site [1] Mana is 19th. While that is probably overly high, I would say he is easily in the top 200 Starcraft 2 players in the world. I would also say that to get from beating a top 200 human to beating all humans is much smaller than from scratch to beating a top 200 human.

Veelox··on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Is Absolutely Right About Racist Algorithms
Here is a somewhat modified situation. Say you use a machine learning algorithm to recommend if a person currently accused of a crime should be allowed bail. The fitness function should be to maximize the number of people who are allowed bail and minimize the number of people who miss their court date.

Say that the model allows X% of people to have bail and makes sure only Y% fail to show up.

The model then adds race as an input to the model. This improves the model so that it allows X+5% of people to have bail and makes sure that only Y/2% fail to show up. It also has the effect that it increases the chance that a black person is denied bail and increases the chance that a white person is allowed bail.

Do you think the inclusion of race is bias? Should race be removed from the input to the model?

Veelox··on DeepMind StarCraft II Demonstration [video]
Wow, Alphastar was able to 5-0 vs TLO (when he was off racing) and 5-0 vs Mana in an impressive manner. I am quite impressed that DeepMind has been able to take down Go and now Starcraft. From here on out, if DeepMind makes an announcement about a demonstration of X, I expect them to beat the top humans at X.

Edit: In the live game Mana is able to beat Alphastar. Alphastar was trained with a more limited camera than the previous games. Mana was able to harass Alphastar with a warp prism then push in and win.

Veelox··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
This comment makes me think you have never played starcraft.

As long as the change we well advertised and gave people time to adjust norms, I would be all for it.
Veelox··on Illinois Bet on Video Gambling and Lost
I know what you are getting out but I would like to remind you that US corruption is nothing compared to parts of the world where it is expected to have to give the police cash when they pull you over.

Veelox··on Monorepos and the Fallacy of Scale
It still does, while someone might point out that a few percent of Google's code is not in the monorepo, most of it is in the same repo.
Veelox··on Stripe Terminal – Programmable point of sale
Hey if Stripe really is reaping in the profits I have great news for you! Someone, maybe even you, can launch a competing project, offer a similarly polished API, and charge 2.5% and reap slightly less profit but still almost pure profit! Once that happens, Stripe will be forced to reduce its fee and everyone on the internet will be able to keep a little bit more of their money. Everyone wins (except Stripe and NewCo)! In the meantime, people get to choose if paying Stripe 3% is worth all the headache that it saves or if they are better off with a different approach. Hopefully not to many people will get tricked into pay Stripe outrageous fees for being a middleman while we wait for capitalism to work.

Veelox··on Some Facebook Employees Unite to Challenge Its ‘Intolerant’ Liberal Culture
Lol. Do you have no self awareness? In a post, where it talks about trying to be more open to conservative viewpoints, you imply that the default reason to support border security is racism? This is exactly the line of thinking that causes people elsewhere in the thread to comment that they rarely meet conservatives. If someone is in an environment where they have to argue just to prove they are not racist, why bother?
Veelox··on Some Facebook Employees Unite to Challenge Its ‘Intolerant’ Liberal Culture
Also in the memo he stats

>Your colleagues are afraid because they know that they — not their ideas — will be attacked. They know that all the talk of “openness to different perspectives” does not apply to causes of “social justice,” immigration, “diversity”, and “equality.” On this issues, you can either keep quiet or sacrifice your reputation and career.

You shouldn't be called a racist because you think that the US should work to ensure no one crosses our southern border without permission.

Veelox··on Some Facebook Employees Unite to Challenge Its ‘Intolerant’ Liberal Culture
>So then why do you wonder why he pushes for politics in the workforce? His goal—hell, it should be all of our goal—is to stamp out places where such hate is encouraged.

How do you think a person who wore a MAGA hat to Google or Facebook would be treated? What about someone who advocates that people who entered the country without permission should be charged with a crime? I think the point being made is that be careful how the minority is treated because one day you might be in the minority. The best way to do that is to keep out politics out of work.

Veelox··on Why U.S. Corporate Boards Don’t Include Workers
One thing that article doesn't touch on, if we returned ceo pay to 1978 average of 30:1, how much of a raise would that give each employee?
Veelox··on Twenty-two states ask appeals court to bring back net neutrality
>right to free speech from governmental interference

I don't like where this argument goes. Do you think it should be legal for Google to remove every search result of a cannabis business? Should it have been legal for Google to censer anyone advocating for LGBT rights before they were a protected class? If you answer no to those questions its hard to justify saying that 1A only applies to the government.

Veelox··on US bosses now earn 312 times the average worker's wage
>A proposed fix would be to stop giving tax cuts to the rich/businesses in hopes that the not rich will somehow magically get some trickled down benefit and instead do things that actively benefit the lower economic classes.

So it seems like you are saying, tax the rich and do something to benefit the lower economic classes. What specific policies to you support that would benefit the lower economic classes?

Veelox··on US bosses now earn 312 times the average worker's wage
I skimmed it and the closest I could get to find an answer to my question was

>Finally, it also seems worth noting that this decoupling coincided with the passage of many policies that explicitly aimed to erode the bargaining power of low- and moderate-wage workers in the labor market.

I am in my 20's I was not alive in the 70's. What did Nixon, Ford, and Carter change in that time that eroded the bargaining power of wage workers?

Veelox··on US bosses now earn 312 times the average worker's wage
Thank you for providing that link. It seems like that the divergence started in 1973 and was clear by 1980. Do you have any ideas on what changed in that time phrase that caused the divergence?
Veelox··on US bosses now earn 312 times the average worker's wage
>But I have some issues as to why that inequality happens.

Can you expand on why inequality happens and some ideas to change/fix the causes?

Veelox··on US bosses now earn 312 times the average worker's wage
>(For example, luxury condos get built, but affordable housing does not.)

One think to think about, in a lot of areas where only luxury condos are being built, there tend to be pretty limited numbers of condos being built. If you are a developer and you know you will only be allowed to build 50 units, you are going to build the most expensive units you can so you can maximize your gross profit even if the marginal profit rate isn't as good. If you were allowed to build 1000 units, you might choose to build affordable housing that has a better marginal profit since the larger number of units allows you to have a higher gross profit.
