Veelox··on The United States’ Unamendable Constitution
> Meanwhile, Ireland manages to amend its constitution regularly [1] without exploding.

Ireland has population of ~5 million or about the same as Alabama. It isn't the best example.

Instead of a general critique could you instead offer a specific general improvement?

>"Race", even though it's a only a social construct with no link to science in any way,

Can you flesh out this thought a little more? My first reading of this makes me think your trying to say race has no basis in scientific fact but that doesn't make any sense to me. What do you mean?

Veelox··on Ask HN: One team lead always builds a monoethnic team – what to do?
> There are a lot of white males in this thread who take the lack of diversity in tech so personally.

I understand this example lacks some important nuance but directionally useful. Imagine there was explicit hiring goals for left handed people and industry conferences for left handed and organisations for promoting left handed people in tech. In that world I don't see why right handed people are wrong for taking it personally that a whole bunch of effort is put into hiring not them.

Veelox··on Ask HN: One team lead always builds a monoethnic team – what to do?
Here is my 2¢ on the matter. Most tech companies currently have publicly stated goals to hire more under-represented minority engineers. Almost all of them publicly say they want to hire more of these engineers. Thus I conclude the demand for these engineers outpasses supply.

> Aside from lowering our hiring standards for minorities, I’m not sure what else we could be doing better.

Your options when supply constrained are to pay more, buy lower quality, find untapped supply or do without. It sounds like you are doing without. I don't see many issues with that approach.

Veelox··on What do lawyers do?
> what is the motivation of the anti abortion bloc?

I'm going to take this question seriously. The pro-life bloc is sincere when they say they think killing a fetus after conception is murder. They also on average have right leaning policy. Since you didn't list specifically what you meant by "exhibit these quantities" so this is guessing. I see a lot of arguments from left leaning folks that round to "if pro-life people were REALLY pro-life they would agree with all my policies (health care, climate change, gun control, ect)" and then use this argument to say pro-life people are liars. Nope, they just disagree about when killing the pre-born humans counts as murder.

Veelox··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
> When I see that it always seems to me that the real issue is the CEO has made a conscious choice to pick profit over doing the right thing

Just going to toss my hat in the ring and say that I think selling data to ICE falls on the right half of the right/wrong spectrum. Not everyone agrees with your specific take on right and wrong. Sometimes those discussions shouldn't happen in the workplace.

It's amusing to me that you comment complaining that fascists will seize power given the chance. I have seen the same thought process but pointing at wokism instead of fascism. The parallel is so strong I had to reread your post to double check which side you were arguing to support.
Veelox··on No one expects young men to do anything and they are responding by doing nothing
Suicides are an informal measure of how unhappiness. The thinking is that if people reach a certain level of unhappiness they opt out of life. The implication is that there is a lot less unhappiness in Greece.
Veelox··on Ask HN: When did 7 interviews become “normal”?
It depends on what you are counting as interviews. Normally there is 1 recruiter/hiring manager initial call. Then there is 1 phone screen of some sort. If you pass that it's normal to have 4 onsite interviews in a day. That gets to 6. Sometimes there is a follow up interview and sometimes you skip the phone screen. I feel like 5-7 is the normal routine. Is there something else you expect?

> I think people would generally agree the user experience of Uber is an improvement over taxis even if the labour conditions are a regression.

I am going to make my point bluntly. Do you think the people driving for Uber are dumb? Every time I see this kind of argument I feel like it removes any agency from the gig workers. The implication is "Uber's drivers don't understand they are getting screwed. We need to change the rules of the game so Uber stops screwing drivers."

I have never seen a good argument for how Uber is exploitive that doesn't assume the drivers are to dumb to realize they are being exploited.

Hey, let me see if I can play this game!

We have the same problem in the US. Certain "Equity loving" sects applaud disregarding national boarders, easy release of multiple time offenders, shouting down those who disagree, and the death of any vaccine protester.

Forget tolerance I want liberty back. What makes tolerance so good that it should be prioritized over everything else? I want everyone granted certain inalienable rights and then allowed to live how they want as long as they abide by their rights and the rights of others. If people want to use their right to vote, follow the process, and support something that others disagree with, that's liberty in action.

Veelox··on Go Replaces Interface{} with 'Any'
In C++ there could be 7 or 8 different ways go about implementing similar functionality. This is powerful in that it lets you do exactly what you want because each of those ways is subtly different and sometimes you need each one.

Go's proponents think it's okay to be a bit less powerful so that there is only 1 maybe 2 ways to do something. This makes code at different companies more similar.

It also mean that a new grad can join the team, read the code, copy it, modify it some, and it's pretty much right. A staff SWE and a new grad will right very similar code in Go. In C++ it's anyone's guess how similar their code will be.

Veelox··on 100 years of whatever this will be
"All men are created equal" is a pretty compelling reason to end segregation. "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" is a pretty compelling reason to end gun control. "nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law" is a pretty compelling reason to require a trial to have an abortion.

You can make really good arguments from our established principles for and against most controversial issues. There is a clear method to add rights to the Constitution. I would say that happened for segregation and it took awhile to be enacted. If someone wants to change something for abortion or gun control let's amend the founding document otherwise let people live within the rules we have set.

Veelox··on 100 years of whatever this will be
You seem absolutely certain you are right about certain issues. One of the big draws of America originally was that is was huge and open and you could join a community that agreed with what you mostly.

Yes some people view abortion as a right, others view it as murder. The process shouldn't be to gain enough power to force everyone to follow what you want. It should be to establish rules we can all live by and then live and let live. Mississippi wants strong restrictions after 15 weeks. Let them. New York wants on demand until birth. Let them.

Honestly, if I know your opinion on abortion I shouldn't be able to guess your opinion on taxes. It would be good to allow more diversity in options and long term we can see which ones work.

> I do think the ending political metaphor doesn't quite fit, however.

Literally none of my immediate family has gotten the vaccine. I know several more people who haven't gotten it. I have been reading Scott since around 2015. I would say I sit in an interesting intersection of worlds for this issue.

While the facts of the metaphor are slightly off, I think Scott got the emotional feeling exactly correct. There are hostile aliens who actively gone against my interests in the past, they have been wrong before, their is a good chance they could use this for their own gain. That is exactly how my parents feel.

Veelox··on How Michigan grew its startup ecosystem
By reputation, University of Michigan has a very good engineering program. It's good enough that if you finish you can get a job anywhere else. It's kind of sad that if the school was worse more people would stay in state.

Long term I think the best bet is let people go and get experience and find a way to get them to move back later in life.

Veelox··on What 3°C of global warming looks like
Oh it's not fool proof and there are would probably be cost over runs and you would probably need to make power produces whole for their capital out lays. There might be an nuclear incident. I feel like if the world was going to end in 30 years people would be willing to discuss more direct action.
Veelox··on What 3°C of global warming looks like
I forget where I saw it but I remember someone on the right criticizing those on the left by saying "I will start treating climate change like an emergency when they start acting like it's and emergency". A lot of the "solutions" to climate change that are suggested align with what the left already wants. If it's really an emergency let's act like one. The navy runs A1B reactors that are somewhere in the range of 500MW the US uses somewhere around 450000MW at any given time. That's 900 A1B reactors. They cost somewhere around $200m to put on a carrier. That puts it at around $180b to take us to 0 carbon power generation. If people believed the world was going to be uninhabitable soon you think they would be willing take some kind of path like this but instead they suggest lots of things they already want.
Veelox··on Employees pleaded with Facebook to stop letting politicians bend rules
14th Amendment violations are only in play when a government tries to advantage or disadvantage based on sexual orientation and thus we have fully resolved the issue of if you have to make a cake for a gay wedding. You don't since you're not a government. Nice, simple easy, see my point?
Veelox··on Employees pleaded with Facebook to stop letting politicians bend rules
I feel like this argument only ever gets used in this specific situation. Americans are granted freedom of speech, if companies are large enough they are meaningfully infringing on that right we should do something about it.

>People don't want freedom of speech, they want freedom from repercussions of speech.

To use a pointed example, I'm pretty sure Trump just wants to be able to tweet again with all the repercussions that brings.

Veelox··on GitHub, fuck your name change
Trump did plenty of dumb stuff. It bothers me when people misquote him so bad they are practically lie about it because it makes people doubt all of the bad things he really did.

Did Trump do something improper by calling the Governor and pressuring them? Yea. Was it so bad as directly tell them to "find votes"? No.

Veelox··on GitHub, fuck your name change

Fyi, the Washington Post offered an official retraction of that quote recently stating it wasn't based in reality.

>there needs to be a positive bias for minorities who were historically disenfranchised

>I absolutely think we need affirmative action to relieve historic deficits, but at the same time this affirmative support is in itself discriminatory and can have negative effects. What to do?

Quit affirmative action at anything above the high school level and poor resources into fixing the issues before high school. Personally I reject the framing that we need it and fully agree with you about the negative effects. The long term effects of people "being given" jobs or school placement I think are more negative than positive and you are seeing that. The Irish, Italian, Jews, Chinese, and Koreans were all able to get to parity or better without affirmative action.
