VT_Drew··on Civilization 6 is coming in October, with big changes
They can fear and hate me, as long as they are too scared to do anything about it.
VT_Drew··on Civilization 6 is coming in October, with big changes
Agreed. I was kind of disappointed in the "AI" in Civ V. The first time I played and an country denounced me I obliterated them off the map and thought to myself, no one else will be foolish enough to denounce me now. Wrong, if you take over nation completely then everyone starts to denounce you, that is the way the "AI" is programed to think.
VT_Drew··on Benefits of 1 Minute of All-Out Effort during Exercise
>Finally! I can get my entire workout done in one minute' and that's kind of missing the point.

I can't agree with you more. However, I think this shows the importance of going hard. When I am at the gym and I see these people leisure peddling a bike while reading a book or a magazine, I just don't get it, why bother at all? Peddling slowly for 40 minuets isn't going to do jack. If you go to the gym go all out, push yourself as hard as you can until you body fails. Then rest and push until it fails again. Work through the failure. If you aren't wobbling out of the gym then you failed.

McAfee offered to do it free of charge. Should have took him up on that, rather than wast $1M.

No thanks. I pay just slightly more than $1,375 for the mortgage on my 4 bedroom house on 3 acres of land.
VT_Drew··on Money Creation in the Modern Economy (2014) [pdf]
>The dollar bills you hold in your wallet are nothing less than 'certificates' indicating that the US government has a liability of the amount shown on those dollar bills, payable to the holder of those dollar bills.

Except dollars are no longer backed by anything. So the governments liability is nothing. What are they going to do trade you a dollar for a dollar? It is literally just paper. It is a stretch to still think of it as a 'certificate'.

VT_Drew··on Stop calling it poaching
Ugh....this article totally misrepresents hunting. Cecil was NOT poached. The hunter paid $50,000 for a LEGAL HUNTING TAG. This is the exact opposite of poaching. Poaching happens when you don't have a tag and hunt anyway. Hunting, especially in poorer countries, actually helps protect the species. The government body issuing tags wants to continue to issue tags in future as it is a revenue stream. The last thing they they want is to bring the population of a species below sustainable levels. The revenue from the tags employ park rangers and people that stop poachers. When you don't have park rangers or anyone to enforce legal hunting that is when poaching becomes a big problem and animals are hunted to extinction.
VT_Drew··on Why Gold?
>e) No other use - Gold is terrible for most other things

Not true, Gold is one of the best conductors of electricity and is used in electronics and wiring.

VT_Drew··on Intel's New Xeon E5-2602 V4 CPU to Sport 5.1GHz Clock, 165W TDP
>The problem is, Intel's super-quick Xeon E5-2602 V4 processor will only be made through specific OEMs, and will not be pushed out into the world for public consumption.

So I basically wasted my time reading this.

VT_Drew··on Hosting Survey: GoDaddy #1, CloudFlare #2
Surprised that DigitalOcean isn't on this list.
VT_Drew··on AMD's Answer to GameWorks: Open Source Tools, Graphics FX, Libraries and SDKs
>NVIDIA isn't exactly losing this race

Because AMD has been putting out great cards the past few months, completely revamped their their driver software. Meanwhile NVIDIA has been doing not much of anything. The latest reports have shown AMD regaining market share in discrete CPU's and this trend will most likely continue. AMD has ZEN coming out next year, and they will probably be profitable again by the end of 2016. AMD isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

VT_Drew··on Let's Redesign Web Design
Is it just me or is every picture/photo in the article broken?
VT_Drew··on Prices for starter homes are crowding out millennials
20% down would mean even fewer millennials would be able to buy a house. I don't know anyone that has 40k sitting around in their bank accounts for a 20% down payment on 200k starter home.
VT_Drew··on On the manifestos killers leave behind
From your first paragraph:

>‘I have noticed,’ it says, ‘that so many people like him are all alone and unknown, yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are. A man who was known by no one is now known by everyone. His face splashed across every screen, his name across the lips of every person on the planet, all in the course of one day. Seems the more people you kill, the more you’re in the limelight.’

So, PLEAE can you stop fucking mentioning these assholes names? For the the love of God you are perpetuating the problem.

VT_Drew··on Native Americans aren't genetically more susceptible to alcoholism
No shit. We took their land, killed their families and friends, and quarantined them to "reserves". Then introduced them to alcohol. What did you think would happen? It isn't genetics, it is escape-ism.
VT_Drew··on Fed Leaves Interest Rates Unchanged
>People are alot more concerned about trade with China than a token Fed Rate hike, sorry.

This is the most bogus thing I have read all day. The China argument is smoke-and-mirrors, and it doesn't hold any water. The real reason is because of the rate hike. Yeah it would be small rate hike, but the any country that has any stock in US dollars has been expecting rate hikes to gradually increase. So everyone is expecting that if the Fed raises rates, it will continue to do so for awhile. That is why the markets go down when there is talk of a rate hike. And now the jig is up, you can expect to see the dollar start to fall because the world now knows that the Fed doesn't have the galls to up the rates and any stock they have in US dollars is pretty much worthless.

VT_Drew··on Pineapple – A standalone front end to IPython for Mac
I am pretty sure they are using virutalenv or something similar so that the python version that comes with it is contained and doesn't overwrite or interfere with your system python.

VT_Drew··on Ask HN: How do you feel about ad blockers?
Depends on what context. ISPs should not block ads, unless they are offering it as an extra service (i.e. optional that a customer must opt into). ISPs need to treat any and all traffic exactly the same by default. Home users and business have the right to block any content they don't want to receive(either by plugin or proxy server).

VT_Drew··on MIT discovers batteries with indefinite lifetimes using solid-state-electrolytes
You might be sleeping a long time. I doubt this will see the light of day anytime in the near future. It goes against the current "planned obsolescence" model.
VT_Drew··on Russian antivirus firm faked malware to harm rivals, say ex-employees
Even better would be: "Ex-employees from Kaspersky Labs say the firm faked malware to harm rivals."

If these claims have any truth to them at all, then it is completely irrelevant that Kaspersky is a Russian firm.

VT_Drew··on The Web We Have to Save
>(3) is happening with bitcoin and tor

You can't centralize bitcoin, that would be like trying to centralize p2p sharing, the protocol doesn't allow it. An alternative digital currency may emerge that is centralized, or more likely, a single currency exchange will dominate bitcoin. But in reality exchanges would become obsolete if bitcoin really took off (you would just get paid and purchase goods all in bitcoin, no need to exchange to another currency).

VT_Drew··on Show HN: A Hand-Drawn QR Code Alternative
> and solves a lot of the problems with QR codes. Not just the hand-drawable-ness

Who is trying to hand-draw QR codes? Why would you need/want to hand draw a QR code? The aesthetic thing for me is just a personal preference. I don't see how meshtags solve any problem that isn't already solved.

VT_Drew··on Show HN: A Hand-Drawn QR Code Alternative
> once the Meshtag service goes down or closes for good, all tags become impossible to read

That is my concern as well. Also, what problem does meshtag solve? Why wouldn't I just use QR codes? I mean meshtag is neat and all, but seems like a novetly to me.

VT_Drew··on Run as the Root Account

VT_Drew··on Should every website send you an email when you login?
I would not want my inbox flooded with notifications every time I log into a site (I would probably just make a rule to put them in the trash, which would defeat the purpose). Gmail has pretty good system where it notifies me every time I login from a device that I haven't used to login to gmail before. Since most of the time I am checking Gmail from the same two devices I rarely get these notifications. It is nice to know that this security is there, I would quickly realize if someone else was trying to login to my account.
