VMtest··on Ask HN: How ready for daily driving is Asahi Linux?
how does the new deep sleep s2idle work compare to older gen of laptops?

some people reported that a night costs 20 - 30% of battery life on framework laptop (after they configured s2idle deep properly), but nobody cares to measure the possible battery life difference between s2idle deep and s3

edit: I have 11th gen i5 intel nuc, but I didn't check whether the deep sleep works or not since it's a desktop

VMtest··on The saddest “just ship it” story (2020)
this is with regards to GP

GP asked 'They "can" but will they?'

No, they won't

in reality most people won't do it because they don't know whether it will print money

your comment "If it prints money" doesn't apply in reality and it comes off as if you won this argument to HN readers, which in fact no

VMtest··on Rust is hard, yes, but does it matter?
imagine Rust is being introduced as the first language to teach students.....

Nothing is wrong with that

VMtest··on I’ve spent my Easter break customizing Neovim
> most of my experience using similar features in other products (Intellisense in Visual Studio, whatever the equivalent broken thing in Xcode is called) is that it really was never that useful?

No, they are not useful

I have been using IDE for sometimes, none of the features helped me to solve very complex logic in the codebase. I have to debug, test and trace the errors manually

And those who often refactor their code (with their IDE), I don't know if they are designing the architecture correctly. Once in a while is fine, but if they are doing too much of that, yea probably they are messing up the codebase. I don't really want to work with somebody like this, imagine that you have to solve the errors that they produce and IDE doesn't actually help at all

VMtest··on Experience Report: 6 months of Go
nobody significant uses it in linux and cloud space nowadays

don't give me the crap that java is for system programming just because java can, it doesn't mean anything if nobody significant is using it

any programming language can system programming as well if you go by that definition, python, lua, javascript

VMtest··on Notes on an Observability Team
such long article to talk about how teams should work together, yet no proper explanation of the o11y concept popularized by Charity Majors
VMtest··on Experience Report: 6 months of Go
Go is being used for system programming, that's not what Java is for
VMtest··on I've used all the notebooks
So I have a habit of noting down HN links, in digital form of course, here are some you might find interesting

1. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30395238 | My Notebook System (ratfactor.com)

2. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30344237 | Notes apps are where ideas go to die, and that’s good (reproof.app)

VMtest··on Fig (YC S20) – Adds IDE-style autocomplete to your existing terminal
this opens my eyes, TIL some people on HN have the ability to downweight a comment (which is not equivalent to downvoting)
VMtest··on Lies we tell ourselves to keep using Golang
> At what cost? How many man-hours did it take? How many bugs could have been avoided? How much faster could it be done with other languages? Most importantly: if Google stops backing its development, who else could replace it?

Same question can be asked when Rust or C/C++ are being used to write k8s

> And if you did see anyone using that argument, we probably would say that this is just a lie they tell themselves to keep using C.

A bad programmer is a bad programmer. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail

People who did read this article should be aware of the shortcomings of Golang by now, and some of them will still be using it, and I am very sure of that

VMtest··on Lies we tell ourselves to keep using Golang
Author's criticisms are valid, but

"There's two types of languages, languages people complain about and languages no one uses"

Is author being serious about all people who write Go for production would be waking up at 3am to fix issues? If this is happening, software engineers are being abused, enough said

And not recommending C/C++ because it is easy to shoot yourself in the foot, apparently the devs enter hospitals so many times when memory-related vulnerabilities happen in Windows/Linux/Android/MacOs/iOS and Chrome/Safari/Firefox

people should stop idolizing programming languages

VMtest··on OpenRA: Open-source RTS game engine for games such as Command and Conquer
I wonder how RTS game on mobile could look like, since it requires a lot of GUI buttons to control

perhaps simplified version could work, like MOBA on mobile

VMtest··on The SymPy/HackerRank DMCA Incident
do they also DMCA strike replicated repositories hosted in other countries, like China/Russia or SEA countries?

I definitely won't tell you guys to copy the orignal HackerRank questions and solutions to other self-hosted git services once in a while

VMtest··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
Correction: it doesn't mention whether people outside of US/*Canada* can apply or not
VMtest··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
Yea I am aware of that, my apology, I should have mentioned that I was asking more about getting EU blue card, they have a score system for foreigners and a degree/master could count towards that if we want to work as a IT worker in Germany/Austria

Another comment mentioned it as well, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31182122

I would be glad to know whether the Master program from georgia tech is recognized in Germany/Austria

VMtest··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
I checked the admission page but it doesn't mention whether people outside of US/EU can apply or not
VMtest··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
Glad to see somebody mentioned this, I asked about this in another comment regarding georgia tech online master https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31182962
VMtest··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
anyone knows if the online Master from Georgia Tech is recognized by Germany/Austria? this is to get a visa to work in IT sector in those countries
VMtest··on The Superhero Industry Hates Children (2019)
I think you have a comprehension problem
VMtest··on Twitter buyout puts Mastodon into spotlight
I can block emails that I don't like as well...

That's their mastodon instances, not anyone else's, it's up to them to do what they want

VMtest··on Khan Academy launches Khan World School online high school
Online learning is for those who can take advantage of it and accelerate their learning or manage better their time

For those who couldn't stand it should stay behind by attending classes physically

VMtest··on The Superhero Industry Hates Children (2019)
I am not sure if you are short-sighted, but this kind of comment doesn't contribute to HN

I am from Asia, while we love super hero movies because they are cool (including the dark side), but that doesn't mean we appreciate the culture described in the article, to be honest, it's kind of lame

VMtest··on In defense of swap: common misconceptions (2018)
1. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26244093 | M1 Mac high SSD writes

Not sure if the above case has been solved in M1 Mac

On x86 Mac, if the programs exceed the memory available, it would start swapping to disk too, though that is not as how Windows do swapping. On Windows, if I don't enable pagefile swap, some programs will crash even if there are so much memory available

Anyway, I do monitoring on memory usage on any OS that I use. Out of memory situation by people mostly is due to negligence, it's what it is. If people are unhappy because doing memory monitoring would waste their focus energy, just buy more computers

VMtest··on QEMU 7.0
I didn't see anyone mentioning about GPU acceleration for 3D graphics so just in case for those who are not aware, Virtio-GPU, a virtual GPU implemented in Qemu for Linux and classic Windows OS guest machines, which works under Windows host. Just like VMWare.

You can watch some demo videos from the YouTube channel "KJ Liew",

1. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl8InhZs1ixZBcLrMDSWd0A/vid...

I think KJ Liew is also the person that submitted patches to Qemu for M1 Mac to have 3D acceleration in Linux/Classic Window OS guests

VMtest··on Leaked Game Boy emulators for Switch were made by Nintendo, experts suggest
And of course sending C&D to fan games' developers is justified

Not to mention taking down Steam Deck Nintendo Switch Emulation videos on Youtube

Overall great investment

VMtest··on 5-min breathing workout lowers blood pressure as much as exercise, drugs (2021)
I also watched Wim Hof on youtube during the pandemic, he even made a video regarding Covid at that time

Well, I never really got Covid myself, I feel good knowing your recovery experience with that method

Now, I should start using Wim Hof or similar method already

VMtest··on Advantages of Monorepos (2015)
Your frustration has already been addressed in danluu article under the header "Cross-project changes"

I believe he said that he wrote this article to avoid repeating the same convo again and again....

VMtest··on Storing UTC is not a silver bullet (2019)
> If the convention hall could be booked hourly and had different events every hour, suddenly a slot would've opened up, at the 2 AM on the DST-change Sunday, the hour which would've not existed if the daylight savings law stayed the same...

I did not think of this before...interesting....leave these problems to politicians, software engineers and end users to accommodate, I just want to be a naive programmer

VMtest··on Storing UTC is not a silver bullet (2019)
I assume you mean UTC plus the latitude and longitude

isn't UTC alone is enough?

VMtest··on Storing UTC is not a silver bullet (2019)
Not very often that system timestamp and UTC related posts sometimes appear on HN front page

I think 3 days ago I was checking on it again, because I was wondering how websites put timestamp in their published RSS/atom feed

https://hackerdaily.io RSS feed made me confused, to select timezone for the RSS feed as they want to think "Yesterday" means different thing for different timezone, not sure why, but I don't want to confused myself thinking how timezone and "Yesterday" work together

HN is using UTC, I realized that by hovering the mouse pointer on the "2 hours ago"

Again, if people don't want to use UTC for future events it's their choice. Personally I would advocate to use UTC and manually calculate the local datetime for future event, even if local timezone changes

You know, I wonder how watches work in this case, how do you alter the time on your watches according to the DST changes? The mechanical engineer of the watch takes this bug into account?
