Tutorials like this are good for learning, but since computers are great tools which can help to prevent repetitive work it would be great if the author published a virtual machine image or, even better, some saltstack or ansible recipes to build this on github, so it could be improved and maintained by everybody.

Hint to authors of similar tutorials: yes, just release the scripts to build the vm or docker image. This is 2015, it hurts to see 100 of people manually copy pasting things.

UserRights··on Ask HN: The “I want to do everything but end up doing nothing” dilemma
Problem: Information Overload. Solution (immediate): Cut input. Solution (long term): Stop wasting time with BS.

Do NOT start to read books / weblogs to solve "productivity problems". Biggest bullshit you could do right now. This will only increase your overload. Not all of these books are bad, but read them later, it will not help you right now. Instead do this:

YOUR MISSION (ONE WEEK SPECIAL OPS):

-> STOP USING THE COMPUTER FOR ONE WEEK - START RIGHT NOW.

No exception. Be absolutely strict about it. It is only one week - it might change your life, so no exception, not one single minute. Send emails now about being offline for one week to most important people. CLOSE ALL BROWSER TABS before shutting down the computer and then put your computer into a wardrobe or in a place you can not see it. Hide it.

-> Calm down your neurons.

Sleep a lot. DO NOT WATCH TV. Do not read any books. Eat very good, this means healthy, not much. Eat lots of vitamines, fruits, salad, etc., no toxic waste like meat from industrial production (too many hormons and medics), no sugar, no alcohol, no drugs. Spend much time with things that let you feel physically good, e.g. taking a bath, massage, sports, etc. Go outside, walk, move your body, WASTE TIME sitting on some sunny place doing nothing. Do some meditation or just sit down and try not to control your brain, just let your ideas flow like clouds in the sky.

-> you will feel better after two days, but DO NOT TOUCH THE COMPUTER AND DO NOT WATCH TV. Do not read books. Go on with relaxing and feeling good. If you start feeling an urge to "do something", go out and move your body or ask your girlfriend what she would like to do.

-> After the week passed, you will realize that you are still alive and that you did not miss anything. You do not need a computer to have a good life. Interesting experience, try it yourself.

-> Now write down what you want to achieve the next week and what exact task you want to accomplish, just a few words are ok, but this will be your plan for the week and you must follow it strictly. Before startig the computer again, write down what exact task you want to solve with it.

-> Stop using the internet like a news paper or a tv show. Stop visiting this site. Stop using any social networks, twitter, reddit, imgur, whatever. Only do things you need for accomplishing your task.

-> Start using the internet as a place where you can look up things, when you hit a wall and need some specific information.

-> Still stop watching TV. It will help a lot. From time to time download some interesting movie or documentary, but absolutely avoid being radiated with an non-controllable unidirectional information stream.

You are now in a special condition and there is much more to explore about this state of mind, but you have to control your input very strictly. Be aware of the dangers and you will succeed. Good Luck!

Anybody knows a good alternative to this that runs without trouble on Ubuntu and Arch 64 bit Linux machines? Nothing in AUR and I do not feel like hunting for PPA right now.

Meanwhile it would be great if Google could provide a repository with a linux version that runs flawlessly.

Thanks!

But who will ever again trust an US company with private group communication after they put so much effort into converting into a salafist-stalinist-stasi-like surveillance state and after such a long time of the Snowden revelations there is still no real sign of the US people, the companies and the communities are able to get rid of their mentally distorted secret dictators?

It is such a shame. A nation that was the synonym for freedom is now the world role model for how a postmodern dictatorship looks like. Please, all you freedomlovers, finally wake up and change it, I do not see any sane alternative than reverting USA back to a free country...

Very good initiative, thank you very much!

If you would like to switch to are more capable framework it would be much easier to add some collaborative features. I recommend strongly looking at the Python Pyramid framework or at Flask (or at Django, if you want more "rails that lead you") as soon as possible, so this could grow into something really powerful. Many java frameworks also have everything you will need.

Unfortunately there are still many frameworks used nowadays, that are missing very important things around groups, ACLs / RBAC and collaboration. I do not know why, but especially in the PHP world these things seem to be looked at as some "advanced science", with a few exceptions.

Not integrating these features from the very beginning into your product will determine the long term direction of your project without you even knowing about it. This is the dangerous result of using popular, but very limited and limiting frameworks that do not support your growth.

An experienced developer will of course identify these weak points of a framework immediately, unfortunately many people still waste a lot of time with these misleading trap-frameworks, just because they are cool today.

It is important to spot at the weaknesses of these half-assed "frameworks" and clearly tag them as dangerous for serious project work. Laravel is ok for a quick and dirty prototype that helps you to model your ideas, like a brainstorming session, but should not be used for a real project. And this modelling phase should be very short, quickly moving on to the more involved engineering process that takes all aspects of a modern web app into consideration.

Hopefully it is not too late for your project to switch - it will be a very good investment of time, I promise!

UserRights··on LSD: The Geek's Wonder Drug? (2006)
A few important things are missing:

Before trying it, get yourself some diazepam, like e.g. xanax or valium, this is a very good treatment if the trip is getting too wild and it will take you down in less than 30-45 minutes, at least to a level where you can relax. This is your "life jacket" and will strongly reduce the danger of your experience becoming a bad trip, just because you will know that you can easily get out if you want to.

Do not buy from strangers, ask an experienced person you can trust. There is a lot of much more dangerous stuff on the black market sold as LSD that can seriously harm your liver or other organs. Having a good trusted source is extremely important. If you can allow, try to get clean, professionally produced substance from switzerland (ask psychologists or other doctors who are open to this).

Do not take it if you are in trouble, emotional stress, despair or feel overwhelmed by your personal situation. This substance will not solve any problems for you. Clean your life up as much as possible before doing it. Yes, LSD is still used to overcome heavy depressions and other serious problems, like e.g. alcoholism, but such a treatment will most likely only succeed with professional psychological care and is a long term process.

Have a nice trip!

hmm, this can not be complete, I have read about places in the middle sea that are heavily toxic but can not find them here. Is there any collaborative review and research process connected to the data represented by this map? If not, it should be created!

But this should be shared, a lot!

UserRights··on µBlock for Firefox
Blocking at the DNS level produces a lot of requests to 127.0.0.1, which can be quite annoying e.g. if you are using a local webserver for development. Also if you do not have a local webserver on 127.0.0.1 the browser still will wait for answers to your request, what can be an annoying experience. Would be interesting to measure how much CPU and memory actually is wasted with many tabs waitung for elements from 127.0.0.1.

It is the better approach to not let these requests happen right in the browser, what this plugin does, if I get it right.

A warm and big THANK YOU to the developer of this great software, it is so important and good to see that many developers are helping users to protect against the morally challenged who are stealing the privacy of millions every day.

UserRights··on Prison Map
You should take it one step further! Add some interesting information to each prison, especially if it is one lead by a private company, and, most important, the actual profit.

Then in the next step add some charts, user login, connect to a payment service and make it a really cool prison investment exchange! Maybe you could issue some prisoncoins based on the profit numbers. Of course do not forget to publish your own javascript framework that evolved while building it...

However cynical this can get, I doubt that most people will understand that the US model of 'society' is deeply br0ken.

To add something useful: a collaborative data collection of human right violations like e.g torture might be a good tool for triggering a positive change. I am sure there are many other issues that could be attached to the basic gis data collection [1]

Please crowdfund this, so it can grow.

To the authors: please add immediately accessible documentation, best in form of a 'Quick Start' document. Also please add one page to your website that you call 'Features' where you describe what it can do / can not do and add another page to your site that you call 'Documentation' where you put the USER DOCUMENTATION. No, nobody wants to read a paper to get some sync software up and running. THANKS!

Is there an API / webservice that could help developers check for the latest torrents / binaries / badstuff and prevent that upload? The millions of dollars that went into copyright wars certainly brought up something useful, but I can not find it.

Or is the dmca-related workload just the right anti-growth measure to prevent interesting new things coming up?

How do you explain this to your investors: "The site is technically ok and we are growing, but we need money for some people to handle dmca requests and this kills our business modell."

So many cool ideas are blocked because of the retarded dinosaur-politics of corporate stalinism. We need a real breakthrough here for a jump to the next level. Current copyright laws are protecting the wealth of a very small group of people but do seriously damage the development of new industries and thousands of jobs. Stupid.

Technically very nice, but please add these informations: * who are you * in which jurisdiction is this site located * especially: is this site US based or in an EU country * what happens to my data I put on your site * please publish a general privacy policy (collection, retention, distribution to third parties etc.)

At the moment you are just demonstrating very clearly that you give a * thinking on user privacy - that is not very clever.
