security nightmares ahead - running random binaries from the web - but wet dreams of privacy invaders of all sorts becoming real.

very disappointing to see this company not spending one single thought about environmentally acceptable materials, instead polluting the world with even more plastic.

please do not even start with "but recycling works" - it does not. We have to stop using these materials, now.

Apple, of course, is allowed to produce plastic poison products, because they have such a cool logo and buying their stuff makes me a soldier of the cool army of individualists, that I am so proud of being allowed to march in step with.

UserRights··on Ember.js 1.13.0 and 2.0 Beta Released
Here is an interesting story about the flarum forum dev and their switch from ember to mithril due to extensibility problems and performance. Hopefully the auhor will blog some more about his experiences.

Mind the bloat if you do not want to sink the boat.

Joke.
UserRights··on Cleaning an Arch Linux installation
This is BS. I am using debian since many years and apt-get dist-upgrade never blows up anything.

Debian is one of the distros I use for long term installations because it is the only distro that gets release upgrades right, it is no problem using the same installation for several years and jump across several releases. Of course you should read the release notes, but what you are saying is the opposite of my real life experience. Of course it is also very easy to just reinstall.

Writing "every dist-upgrade blows something up" is an indication that you must be doing something very wrong with that computer in front of you. Please provide some bug reports.

UserRights··on Docker Jumpstart
When you start playing around with docker and come to the area where you start to see that many things that should be very easy start to be really complicated, then you should take a look at lxc and the upcoming lxd and compare.
UserRights··on Containers and persistent data
All these problems went away with using lxc, lost so much time with docker, which is definitely the wrong way to do it.

However it is funny to see a whole industry emerging around artificially created problems.

All I can see is the gear turning around, nothing else happens.

It is not fair to present a site in such a premature test stage to the public and title it ironically as "really well". This site will be certainly really good after some professional designers will have worked on that prototype, so why exposing it while still in this early state?

UserRights··on Mozilla's page talking about privacy has Google analytics enabled
When you open a freshly installed Firefox on Ubuntu or Windows (that is where I checked) you will have a google cookie set right before the first usage, without any chance of opting out or being asked before.

Yes, anybody can change the startpage, delete all cookies and restart the browser. How many users will do this? And does forcing every user into google surveillance comply with this privacy marketing of mozilla, or is it just a zynical fake campaign?

There should be a startpage explaining what cookies are, describing the difference between temporary and permanent cookies and how these help to track your web usage, and provide one single, visible button to delete all cookies.

After this I should be asked if I would like to help mozilla funding by redirecting me to a google web search which will set a permanent cookie.

These kind of problems are solved for a long time: use open source software and then you can patch problems yourself if upstream is dead. Any responsible admin will not tolerate closed source black boxes dominating important pieces of infrastructure.
UserRights··on Show HN: Game of Angels – A force-directed graph showing key VCs interactions
No, sorry, I do not know. It would be nice to have some kind of standard format for these kind of info so a visualization like yours could be applied easily to different databases. Maybe with some API-mangling (like yahoo pipes) it would be possible to consume several data sources and feed them into your js. Just an idea.

This reminds me of http://theyrule.net/ - it is a quite old website, still flash. It would be good to have an open format definition and an open source web frontend for visualizations like this.

The connections of your pet investor might be interesting, but there is much more potential to this if you would ask the people that did theyrule for their data, maybe you can find a way of working together?
