Unearned5161··on College Grades Have Become a Charade. It's Time to Abolish Them.
You sound easily impressionable...

Please remember a few things whenever you talk about the quality of education in the United States (if you care to sound informed and thorough): - The United States is a very large country, with many states (50!) - Education quality is not federally organized (there are guidelines, but states make most of the rules) - Education quality depends on many factors, including but not limited to, the state, the county, the demographics of surrounding areas, the property value of surrounding areas, etc

There is no need for rash and poorly informed takes on the quality of education when there is so much room to criticize on more legitimate grounds.

I could see something like Apples new calculator drawing app taking this by storm. Writing out your code and getting syntax support and all the things in your ide but with your handwriting?

In the same way that the calculator writes in the answers in your handwriting, it could write in snippets of code in your handwriting.

If it's going to be made though, it has to be e-ink. Go big or go home!

this is the way, by far my absolute favorite thing to see when visiting a city is a solid bike share program. they should be absolutely everywhere and heavily subsidized. Mexico City's version of this has been my favorite so far. the way you can get virtually anywhere in the city through a combo of Metro, bus, and bike all using the same card is excellent. It solves so many issues and uses the power of crowd funding to make it all work!

Unearned5161··on Child Labor Is on the Rise
perhaps the friction for minors looking for a job exists for good reason. the focus at that age should be school, not work, i recognize that there are those less fortunate that can't afford to do school sans work, but the solution to that should be financial aid, not making them work. society's goal should be to get a more educated populace, by lowering the friction to enter the workforce at such a young age you're endangering that group of kids on the edge who, given more friction, would have stayed in school and gone to do greater things, but since it was so easy to get into work so early they lowered the overall potential of their lives.

so regarding the poor families this would supposedly help, I'd argue it's more complicated than that, and what this may be doing is providing short term help while sacrificing long term social mobility. keep the poor working and not learning and they'll mostly stay poor.

there's nothing wrong of course with a part time gig to get accustomed to different responsibilities, but it should remain restricted to that. you've got your entire life to work full-time, there's no need to rush things.

I'm going to disagree with you here. Concepts have their place in the world, one cannot just have pragmatic ideas in a society, nor can you just have idealistic ideas, there must be a balance, they both feed each other.

While those weird clothes by pompous designers can only be worn on the red carpet, they offer cues for things to trickle down to the clothes you and I wear. They're big ideas, exaggerated themes, like an extract, you don't consume the extract alone, you dilute, you mix.

Car concepts are the same, you never see a car's concept version go all the way till production, they're the concept, the idea is to shoot big, dump everything, write it all out, you can edit later.

We've got enough people on this earth that a great many of them can stay up in the clouds as astronauts of ideas, intermittently communicating to us their findings from the vast universe of creativity, with no impact on society's advancement, in fact to great benefit.

Just my 2 cents

Unearned5161··on Riding in a peloton is the most energy efficient locomotion – research (2018)
I'd say it depends on the group, if you have a group of riders that know each other and have ridden in packs before then the risk of issues are slim. Essentially just stuff that probably would have given you trouble riding alone anyway. The risk starts when you either have a race going on or you have riders that are inexperienced and don't know the customs/procedures.

Although if your bank has no foreign transaction fees and rebates you on ATM fees, you should be fine to use them, so long as you always decline the conversion that they offer (on all the euronets that I've seen it straight up says that there is a 13% markup involved, you can also compare with visa or mastercards conversion rate on their respective websites)
Unearned5161··on How did people get to Britain 950k years ago?
I am really enjoying Crucible of War by Fred Anderson, it's about the 7 year war (1756-1763?) and essentially how it lay the pretext for the American War of Independence but is often overlooked by modern teaching. For me it strikes the right balance for something that has citations for almost everything, but at the same time is fluid to read and you can get into a groove with his battle and scene descriptions. He also manages to deal with bias rather well, which is a tricky thing to do and is what many books that you cite have struggled with (that and rigor of writing), especially when dealing with the assymetry of information available about the time (much more writings from the British/french side than the Indian). He includes this fact in his writing so that you don't get the impression that this is the whole picture. One more thing I see as another potential folly for many pophistory books is breadth. Many tend to take much to big a bite of history and attempt to get it all in ~800 pages, that's not going to happen unless you do some major glossing over at some parts. A book that's considered "good history" I've noticed will be shorter in focus length (not to be confused with book length), if the author wants to write about a whole century or two, they'll split it up into several books. Overall I think it's a great book for someone that wants to get into more rigorous historical text. And I think it's important to remember that not everything has to be fun, in the end what we're doing is reading past events, some events are going to be interesting to you, others not so much. Find your interests and read history books about that, it'll do some of the "fun to read" legwork.
Unearned5161··on Invade Haiti, Wall Street Urged. The U.S. Obliged
exactly what cayblood said

Too often people take these articles and say "well I didn't do that" "what do I have to do with it" "that happened hundreds of years ago, there's a whole new set of people nowadays". It's not just the actions in the moment, but the fact that actions have an effect over time.

Take for example a country that loses a certain number of men in some battle many years ago. Well some of those men would have gone on to work on the land and have offspring, now no longer. Because of that, there was a hit to birth rates, and food production, which in turn affected nourishment country wide, and a smaller next generation adjusting for growth. Which later in turn affected GDP overall and other certain critical economic factors. The point is that actions don't happen in isolation, one might know this as the butterfly effect.

How does this implicate "the white man that lives in america"? Because of all of this plundering and horrid behavior done on foreign soil and because of the slavery that happened in this country, it was a large contributing factor to bringing us to where we are now. And in the same way that it contributed to our success, it detracted from those oppressed group's success. We now live in a world that whether we like it or not, is founded on these horrible truths, and whether we like it or not there are groups of people, countries even, that are worse off because of that, sometimes significantly so.

This is the foundation for conversations about reparations. What can we do now to balance the playing field, a field that we ourselves didn't throw out of balance, but that we are in the singular position to fix.

Unearned5161··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
I was originally going to write a whole drawn out thing, but I realized it wasn't necessary.

One interesting aspect to think about on how social media affects democracy is the aspect of education. I can't find the video right now, but I remember seeing or maybe reading a post that said how you watch all these videos on all these topics ranging from math to economics to civil engineering etc, and you build this false perception of "oh yeah I know this shit", but really you don't, you know one summary that was presented to you.

Those channels: Tom Scott, Johnny Harris, 3B1B, etc. Are all amazing in the time they spend learning their material and then producing such high quality instruction, but even if you watched an hour long video on econ you still wouldn't be an economist. A lot of us know this, but there are a lot of us that don't, and we then go to vote on bills and politicians thinking we know the implications of our actions and how it might affect the country when we really don't.

Of course this isn't just a conversation about social media and it can devolve into a conversation about the dangers of an uneducated democracy overall. But I feel that social media definitely contributes to this false sense of educated that a lot of people have, pair that with echo chambers, misinformation, and an addictive formula and you've got a troublesome future.
