Unearned5161··on Americans increasingly see legal sports betting as a bad thing for society
I'm surprised at the lack of mentioning the effects of gambling on the thing being gambled on!

Sure gambling will always happen wherever there's something with uncertainty. But to make it fully legal opens the doors wide open for growth, leading to the only possible outcome of "more money being bet". I think it would be naive to assume that the integrity of any sport stays stable when such a large amount of money is staked on it.

Nice article, I wanted to point out though that your example board at the beginning has no such ambiguities or 50/50's. Here's a recreation of it so you can see for yourself, if you open it up from the bottom left as you did, the 1 2 1 leads to the board being solved rather quickly:

Something notable to recognize when comparing LLM's to calculators, is the fact that the skill a calculator is replacing can be learned by any competent adult in about a week. Manual division, addition, even more complicated stuff, it will just take much longer. However, the skills that an LLM is targeting, once atrophied are not replaceable in such short time frames.

Being good at coming up with ideas, at critically reading something, at synthesizing research, at writing and editing, are all things that take years to learn. This is not the same as learning the mechanics that a calculator does for you.

I mentioned Micheline just as a commonly recognized ranking for restaurant quality, but its irrelevant to the point. Based on whatever internal ranking of food that you have, if you suddenly experience something that goes off your internal chart, you will have to re-scale your ranking to make it fit. I.e your previously ranked experiences will be affected.

Maybe as a whole its a poor example though because enjoyment of food is a multi-dimensional problem. Whereas obliterating a dopamine receptor is one dimensional.

The second part of your comment seems reasonable, but your glasses analogy makes no sense. Glasses don't make things look exciting, they make things sharper and help you see better.

Furthermore, if you're trying to say that taking off my new glasses makes things less clear then yes, that's precisely the symptom that made me acquire them in the first place.

Unearned5161··on What happens when clergy take psilocybin
I get the direction you're trying to go in, but I think this metaphor is flawed. If all I've seen in life are mediocre street musicians, and then one day I go to some concert and it's the best thing ever, sure that's going to change how I see the street musicians from before.

Replace with food and its even clearer. Going to some top of the line Micheline star restaurant _will_ alter how you look at food for the rest of your life.

Watching a movie in blue-ray full quality no compression _will_ alter how you appreciate streamed movies for the rest of your life.

You can still appreciate it for what it is, but it will forever have that relative smallness.

Unearned5161··on What happens when clergy take psilocybin
Right, that sounds reasonable enough. Maybe that's because it's more of a semi-permanent neuron rewiring and less of hitting a dopamine receptors rev limiter?
Unearned5161··on What happens when clergy take psilocybin
I wonder if a similar thing to the dwarfing high of heroin applies to these psychedelics. Would the amazing awakening experience I'd have with an LSD trip make all other mentally exciting moments and smaller awakenings I come across in day to day life more boring in comparison?
Unearned5161··on Kagi Reaches 50k Users
Honestly I said that as a shoe in for a representation of my larger view of corporate idealist philosophy. Now that I think of it I don't really have an interest in that particular communication bridge, although I recognize that some people might like having an "omni" search tool that brings results from everywhere.

I'll rephrase to state that I'd much rather have a unix-like philosophy where you have small-ish companies each specializing and being very good at one thing and then you have an active medium they all live in and talk together and hold hands and...

Unearned5161··on Kagi Reaches 50k Users
I'm worried about certain projects, like maps, which while pretty, I still never use because it lacks basic functions like stackable filters when searching for restaurants, or navigation of any sort.

Also am worried about the move to mail, I already have fastmail, and kagi would need to create a heck of a mail client for me to even consider switching. I'd much rather have a company that does search very well, a company that does mail very well, and a good communication between the two.

And I also have less tangible worries about Vlad's demeanor when I see some of his writing in the feedback forum or discord. It comes across as ambitious but not very circumspect, but maybe that's what's necessary to make it in this sector. I won't pretend to have enough experience to offer much opinion on the matter, all I can say is that its unsettling at times.

Unearned5161··on Kagi Reaches 50k Users
I love Kagi, and have been a proud user for almost a year now. Lately, however, the more I read about Vlad and the variety of things the company is working on, the more I get worried. My (potentially naive) hope is that more companies enter this sector of paid search engines and the competition helps iron out the kinks. I want nothing more than a good set of options to choose from.

It looks nice, but I'm not sure I'd jump ship from my snippets setup I have with vim. I'm always very entertained when I'm talking with someone and pick up on some very slight deviation from the "norm" in their accent. I think it shows two things: that its near impossible to totally wipe that fingerprint of a past tongue, and that our ears are incredibly adept pieces of tooling

Unearned5161··on How University Students Use Claude
I'm not settled on transcribed conversation being an adequate substitute for writing, but maybe it's better than nothing.

There's something irreplaceable about the absoluteness of words on paper and the decisions one has to do to write them out. Conversational speak is, almost by definition, more relaxed and casual. The bar is lower and as such, the bar for thoughts is lower, in order of ease of handwaving I think it goes: mental, speech, writing.

Furthermore there's the concept of editing which I'm unsure how it could be carried out in a conversational sense in graceful manner. Being able to revise words, delete, move around, can't be done with conversation unless you count "forget I said that, it's actually more like this..." as suitable.

yes, that's the general idea, no? Further studies funded by the government. Pushing the boundaries of knowledge is expensive but critical for any country that wants to remain influential in the world.

Regarding employment rates, I can't speak too broadly on that as I'm more focused on the econ field, which does not have employment issues. But I would be interested in hearing the base for you numbers.

I guess that's a nicer touchscreen than others, but I just don't get why we need touchscreens at all to begin with. I'm a fan of Mazda having a touchless screen, and I'm even more a fan of my 2004 bmw X5 that has the beautiful control of minutely adjusting the temperature by turning a dial in the middle of the dash.

You can set the temperature to something moderate like 70 or whatever and then if the air hitting your face and hands is too hot or cold, you just turn the dial, all other vents continue doing their thing at 70, but you can have hot/cold air on your hands at the same time. And, of course, you can do this adjustment in a split second while you merge onto the highway.

Unearned5161··on Tips for mathematical handwriting (2007)
I've gone through so many phases on this. But lately, the more writing intensive my math classes get, I've settled on lined paper.

Blank paper is too... Blank! And I'm more prone to write big and messy and waste pages (even though it's all digital)...

nice writeup, I always like taking extra care to view the actual motions a professor uses when writing the symbols on the board as it can sometimes be non-obvious the order or direction to start in.

would also love tips on making right curly brackets not be the bane of my existence. I don't get it, I write a right one basically for every left and yet they feel so different!
