Unai··on Social Web Foundation launches, supported by Vivaldi
I have to agree with that post. The only objective of this foundation seem to be the advertisement of the term "social web", I guess because they found "fediverse" to not be marketable enough.

The web doesn't have to be "social media" to be social, and federation doesn't make it any more or less social, it's just federated. The web have always been social, way before "social media" came along.

Words have meanings, and taking over them for personal and economical gain doesn't add anything, only subtracts.

I love the web more than anything, and I'm tired of people using advertisement campaigns to try to poison people's minds for their personal agendas. Your crypto-crap is not the third version (?) of the web. And your flavour of social media is not the social web.

Of course, I think crypto is useless and social media have been detrimental to society, so I might be biased.

Unai··on Show HN: I made crowdwave – imagine Twitter/Reddit but every post is a voicemail
Sorry about the dismissive comments you're getting. You hacked something up and I think it's pretty cool and surprisingly fun. You nailed it with the beep at the start of each audio too. Feels warm, like actual humans communicating with you (even if it's something silly) instead of cold usernames just sharing headlines and memes for karma points.

I wish the HN vibe was more like a digital makerspace and a bit less a tech business news. Sure, I don't think crowdwave will ever be as big as twitter or reddit, so what? That's not a bad thing! Reddit was infinitely better 15 years ago. Even if you close the site tomorrow, I already got some joy from it.

Anyway, I like it, really good job! (:

PS: Does anyone know about an online community similar to HN that actually has that digital makerspace vibe? I said that and know I want it to exist.

Unai··on Keyhole – Forge own Windows Store licenses
Yeah, valid point.

You're right, a game with no anti-cheat or a bad one will have more cheaters. But as you said, it's about the tradeoff, and that's what isn't "great". It was for a period of two years or so, since the tradeoff was "lose all control of your PC by installing a rootkit, play a game completely free of cheats", which was compelling, but now that the game isn't sterile anymore it's hardly worth it, at least for me.

Unai··on Keyhole – Forge own Windows Store licenses
> It is for anti-cheat, and it is great.

How is it great? Vanguard is extremely invasive; having kernel access, you have to relinquish your PC to this chinese-owned company at all times (whether you're playing the game or not), and just trust in their good faith.

And for what? Cheaters are more rampant than ever, now that they have moved to DMA type cheats, which can't (and never will) be detected by Vanguard.

So you give away complete control of your PC to play a game with as many cheaters as any other game. I wouldn't call that "great".

Unai··on Common food dye found to make skin and muscle temporarily transparent
You forgot blindness. If you're transparent, your eyes won't be able to refract light. Which is good if you also have homicidal urges, but awful if you get diarrhea.
Unai··on Artificial Intelligence Cheapens the Artistic Imagination (2023)
Was your only input to ask some guy? When I play with SDXL, I can spend an hour or more on a single image, between prompting and inpainting, and playing with dozens of variables. Each final work is a collage made by generating each detail of the image separately many times. And then I would usually process that final image in some other software to get the final result I want.

Photography and cinema are art forms, even if your phone has a camera. So is painting, even if a baby can fingerpaint. You can ask ChatGPT to give you an image of a cat, but you can also use AI as a tool to express yourself in personal and unique ways.

I honestly don't want to be rude or attack anyone's opinions, but I really think one can only believe generative images can't have artistic value due to ignorance.

Unai··on Freetube is the best way to watch YouTube
I think it's ridiculous to try to paint Google as a little fruit stand asking to "please pay me". Google has more money than god. They are an awful abusive company, and they do break all social contracts and abuse every loophole they can get away with.

If you're trying to use morality to defend your argument, then yeah, we just have different values. If Google wants to give me something for free and then, as you said, put a sign asking to please give them my money, I'm sorry, but I don't make donations to trillion dollars companies.

But again, I don't think any of that really matters. As I said, they are using the open web, they're free to stop anytime they want, but not to change the rules the web is based on.

Unai··on Freetube is the best way to watch YouTube
I don't think neither legality nor ad-free viewing entitlement are even factors in this conversation.

What I'm entitled to is to do whatever I want with every bit of data I download through my browser. The day this stops being the way things are, is the day the web dies, and I can't believe anyone (particularly here) could be defending that.

YouTube provides their data freely. You don't have to sign-up or accept a contract. You open a link and locally download said data. It's on my device, and I control my device, not Google. I can do whatever I want with the data I download, I can make the background pink, I can change some text for something else, and I can take out the parts that I don't like, like ads.

If YouTube wants to stop providing their data with no strings attached, they can. Reddit didn't like the way many of their users used their API, so they blocked it, and I don't use Reddit anymore. If someone doesn't like the way the open web works, they are free to leave, but they can't change the rules.

You ask why we are entitled to ad-free viewing. I ask why do you think Google is entitled to dictate what I do with the local files in my personal device. Do you feel entitled to open your browser's dev tools right now and modify this comment I just wrote?

Unai··on AirTags key to discovery of Houston's plastic recycling deception
Were they not recently caught destroying huge numbers of devices when they sued the company hired to destroying said devices for reselling them instead? I remember reading about that some time ago.

I don't know how that wasn't a much bigger PR issue, but at least I would expect an apple-focused publication to not call them "industry leaders" in such context after that.

Unai··on Stable Audio Open
I don't know how long you have been in HN, but I would recommend you familiarise with / refresh yourself on the community guidelines (https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html). While HN looks and works similar to Reddit (and other such online communities), the tone and culture is not the same.
Unai··on Stable Audio Open
I don't understand. If I make a painting (hell, or a whole animated movie) in the style of Studio Ghibli, am I infringing their copyright? I don't think so. A style is just an idea, if you want to protect an idea to the point of no one even getting inspired by it just don't let it out of your brain.

If the produced work is not a copy, why does it matter if it was generated by a biological brain or by a mechanical one?

Unai··on Old dogs, new CSS tricks
I've read a few articles like this in the last few days and I don't understand why everyone is ignoring the elephant in the room. It's 2024 and Safari is still not evergreen.

When people say Safari is the new Internet Explorer, replies always mention how Safari just adopted such and such bleeding edge CSS feature (while ignoring much older features, though), but the truth is many Apple users won't see those features for years, until their devices break.

Apple is stopping both users and developers from enjoying these very same new features they so happily announce. The web is stuck in time, waiting for enough people to update their devices. Just like in the age of Internet Explorer. At least back then people had the option of installing a different browser. So maybe Safari and the apple ecosystem is actually worse than IE and Windows used to be.

Unai··on An alternative proposal for CSS masonry
This is an answer by the Chrome team to Jen Simmons' article on the WebKit blog "Help us invent CSS Grid Level 3, aka “Masonry” layout", discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40130148
Unai··on Help us invent CSS Grid Level 3, a.k.a. "Masonry" layout
I really don't like how disingenuous, propagandistic and patronising Simmons is being in this article. Ending each section saying "all this will be impossible if not done the way I like", which is absolutely not true. There's not one reason why anything that can be done in "display: grid" couldn't be done with "display: masonry".

But I think, and I hope, that people aren't the fools she's taking us for, and can see how absurd her proposition is.

You could basically clone the grid specification, if you want all those features, and that way both can be developed with what works for each. She says doing that means new grid features might take more time to come to masonry. Really? More time than having to deal with new grid features that won't work at all with your version of masonry integrated in grid? You're still having to deal with two layout systems, even if you want to disguise one of them. Except doing it your way you can't select which system gets the features that work with it.

At the end, instead of two layout systems with two complete sets of features, we'll have one single layout system with a bunch of features that sometimes work and sometimes doesn't, depending on a particular value of a particular declaration that you'll have to know about. And that's why people hate CSS.

Seems lazy and an absolute mess to maintain. And it doesn't make sense at an intuitive level, since masonry works similarly to flexbox, not grid; and it doesn't make sense at a logical level either, since a masonry layout is not a grid.

But I guess this is what we'll end up getting, since apparently anything Jen says goes. Like the ridiculous idea of doing "CSS4", which means nothing, does nothing and is nothing, but we're going with it for some reason anyway.

Unai··on Ask HN: What are the YouTube channel worth to follow in 2024?
Given the question was about channels worth following in 2024, I'm not sure about including Tom Scott, since he's sadly just now stopping his 10 year streak of releasing weekly videos.
Unai··on Omnivore – free, open source, read-it-later App
I just tried it both on Android and in the browser, and while it looks very nice for the price of nothing, there are two things that will probably make me not use it. In case it's of any use for any dev that might be reading: First issue would be no AMOLED option. Second issue is that I can't get it to remember where I left reading in an article; every time I go back to the article it auto-scrolls to a random part of it (happens in both app and browser).
Unai··on We’ll call it AI to sell it, machine learning to build it
Arguing what is and isn't AI is kinda futile, since there's no solid definition. I remember some old footage I once found on YouTube of a very primitive automated system for an airport control tower (I think it was). I don't remember the year, but probably the 70's or so. The guy was calling it AI. Then went into detail about what the software was doing, even showing the code (maybe it was just the interface). It literally was just a whole lot of if/else statements. Once we get used to ChatGPT and the like, it will either stop being called AI or we will start talking more broadly about "General artificial intelligence" for the next thing to come.

Until recently I was on the side of not calling anything AI if it wasn't GAI, but honestly... who cares? Words are just tools to communicate ideas; if most people want to call the things we are doing today AI, that's ok, and it isn't even wrong. It isn't sentient, but it is arguably intelligent by some standards, and it is obviously artificial. If we understand each other, that's good enough.

Unai··on Noiszy: A browser plugin that creates meaningless web data – digital “noise.”
How effective could this be? Maybe if it was super popular, maybe integrated on some browsers like brave or opera, it might send a message, but otherwise, isn't it just a way to give money to ad companies?
Unai··on Godly – Astronomically good web design inspiration
Does anyone have a web design inspiration site that's focused on sites that just look good and have a good UI & UX instead of collecting the most out there canvas animation thingies? Those might look good, but I can't get inspired by something that I can't replicate without a team of multidisciplinary people doing 3D design, WebGL, etc.

I used to have a number of good ones added to my RSS reader, but they have slowly cease to update. I could google for inspiration sites like that, but I know google will only give me listicle SEO spam.

Unai··on You can deactivate anyone's WhatsApp account by simply sending an email
Not true. They were charging 1€ a year, not a month (at least that's the case in my country). The math doesn't add up.
Unai··on The Blob Toy
Can't edit on the app I'm using, but I found this implementation of the game I was talking about: https://www.silvergames.com/en/falling-sand. Not the original, but it has all the elements I remember, plus some interesting things like wind. And works decently on my phone.
Unai··on The Blob Toy
Reminds me of that sand game, I don't remember the name, maybe just "Sand" or "Falling sand" or similar? I know there were a bunch of different versions of it, with a lot of different materials you could draw on the screen, and they interacted with each other in very interesting ways; not just gravity, but there was also a "plant" material that would grow when in touch with water, fire would burn it, gas would explote, etc.

Anyone knows what I'm talking about?

This was many many years ago, but I would love to try it again, although I don't see myself spending the amount of time I did back in the day creating complex mechanisms.

Unai··on Beginners Guide to Lemmy
>The issue is that this illustrates that Lemmy has any priorities above the onboarding process.

>which serves as the underlying reason for failing to get the priorities straight.

Having different priorities than you doesn't make them have the wrong priorities. As a counter-point to you, I'd much rather have a barely good enough interface on a platform that works than a great UI on a platform that doesn't work. The solution is not having both, because if they could they would have done that already.

Also, I don't think it matters that this reddit alternative isn't perfect because there's no better reddit alternative anyway. You either stay on reddit or you go to Lemmy.

I really don't see a reason to complain about Lemmy. Anything not working is not because of laziness or malice or greed; it's a platform made by a couple of guys, to solve a problem for thousands of people, and they're giving it away for free. It's a reddit alternative for people who want one. I say mission accomplished, and they're just getting started

Unai··on Facebook Renames to Meta
>Our Actions: Promoting Safety and Expression, Protecting Privacy and Security, Preparing for Elections, Responding to COVID-19

What a joke. Is there a more bluntly obvious PR than inverting everything you're being criticized for?

Unai··on Spanish government orders GitHub to take down Tsunami Democràtic repository
What a tremendously uneducated comment. Freedom of expression has not being limited in Spain in any way or form, not at all. The apk was removed because a judge (not politics, not the police) confirmed that the app was used to organize violent manifestations. And GitHub had to legally comply with the warrant. No action is being taken to stop manifestations, only to stop the organization of violence.

In case you want to also made the uneducated point that the violence is necessary, I want to remind you that the fact that people manifest doesn't automatically mean there exist oppression from the state, as in this case, there is none.

Unai··on “My Google account got suspended because of NewPipe”
No idea, why do you think so? I could see a bot doing all that.
Unai··on “My Google account got suspended because of NewPipe”
That's exactly what happened to me just a few days ago. I got an email alerting me that a secondary Google account of mine had been accessed, password changed, secondary email changed and I think even some kind of security question also changed (I don't even remember Google having those). Ok, no problem, I'll just tell Google I own it for whatever means they ask and change the password back.

Recovery email doesn't exist anymore. There's no phone number attached (I haven't accessed the account since before I had my first smartphone). And the account must be like 12 years old or so, there's no possible human way to remember the precise month I created it (I don't even remember the year).

I have all my Google accounts connected through gmail, and I can even receive the emails that go to that account, since they go to my main account. I tried for a full whole work day to get the account back, but there's just isn't any human I can talk to, so the account now belong to some russian hacker or who knows. Luckily for me is not a very important account and I haven't found anything important attached to it, but it's very scary.
