TwoBit··on Software is eating the car
OK but with the complexity of games today there is no way such a game could be released bug-free. Could games be released better than they are though? Probably. We needed game software updates in order to allow the 10x complexity increase, but developers took advantage of that to also give them a couple more months of development time.
TwoBit··on Tell HN: SMS-based two-factor authentication is not secure
Yeah the attacker now also has email control.
TwoBit··on How Facebook deals with PCIe faults to keep its data centers running reliably
Facebook discovered that in their data centers heavy usage of SSE instructions caused overheating that broke the chips. It was happening frequently. Source: I worked at Facebook.
TwoBit··on Apple’s tightly controlled App Store is teeming with scams
> most Android devices ship with undeletable malware from vendors

And how are those vendor app actually malware? Their presence can be annoying but they aren't malware.

TwoBit··on How Facebook deals with PCIe faults to keep its data centers running reliably
Has Facebook ever publicly written about the major Intel chip SSE failures they ran into a few years ago?
TwoBit··on U.S. to give ransomware hacks similar priority as terrorism, official says
And not by targeting hospitals?
TwoBit··on “Computer science is not about computers”
It's about computing, not about computers.
TwoBit··on Abolish High School (2015)
Depends a lot on the school, or possibly more specifically: the location or demographics of the school. Many high schools with motivated students (eg where I went) have few issues and good education outcomes. Some others are little better than prisons with dysfunctional students.
TwoBit··on It's virtually impossible to read old iMessages and they take up tons of storage
OK, so document that?
TwoBit··on Marvell Announces First PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD Controllers: Up to 14 GB/S
Doesn't it depend a lot on the game? A well designed game could get a lot more out of a fast SSD.
TwoBit··on Marvell Announces First PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD Controllers: Up to 14 GB/S
IMO disk tech of 25 GB/s vs 100 GB/s for memory counts as approaching.
TwoBit··on Tesla loses U.S. designation for some advanced safety features
Did your lane split into two and it took the left one? What do you think caused it to do what it did?
TwoBit··on Garamond is not a good font to use in web copy (2010)
What is your definition of "retina grade"?
TwoBit··on Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes?
The article has only a single sentence on it, but bar ends are illegal in racing, because they can gouge you and because they can hook on things.
TwoBit··on Cheese photo leads to Liverpool drug dealer's downfall
Right and the design flaw was that a server breach meant all phones were breached. Which is what happened.
TwoBit··on Teardown of a PC Power Supply
How do you tell a quality power supply?
TwoBit··on Teardown of a PC Power Supply
Well he was destroying a power supply to make this report and so maybe there was a budget.
TwoBit··on ABI Mistakes
> Yes, as long as the original pointer was to a non-const location.

So then actually no - it's not guaranteed to be portable. That non-const location qualification of course means portable code cannot just cast const pointers to non-const.

TwoBit··on Why you can’t buy a thermapen on Amazon (2016)
My Thermapen is fine, so is my one with the F/C button. Because I happen to need both and so this supposed distraction is a big benefit. Super simple is nice, except when it's too simple for a given user. Reminds me of how Apple stuck by their guns with single button mice for years but two button mice with scrollers won out because the one button was too simple.
TwoBit··on Why you can’t buy a thermapen on Amazon (2016)
This idea that because a commercial kitchen doesn't mix F and C and thus nobody else should ever have to is ridiculous and is a form of gatekeeping. I download recipes and measurements are sometimes F, sometimes C. Sometimes ounces, sometimes grams. Sometimes cups, sometimes mls.
TwoBit··on Why you can’t buy a thermapen on Amazon (2016)
> Switching between F and C should be difficult. This is something you set once and pretty much never change.

No, because my own experience says otherwise. And this idea of accidental changing is hogwash, again because I've used this for years. Experience is worth a thousand opinions.

TwoBit··on Text editing hates you too (2019)
Good article but I would like to point out that I too looked into the Windows Text Services Framework years ago and it was literally the worst designed and implemented API I had ever worked with in my career. I got ahold of some engineers within Microsoft to ask wtf? and their response was that was written by some disconnected Asian office who understood Asian requirements well but were terrible architects.
TwoBit··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
Those games are using a lot more of the gpu than just the compute functionality.
TwoBit··on Bette Graham, inventor and founder of Liquid Paper
It's a different product created about five years after Liquid Paper, but grew in Europe while Liquid Paper was growing in US.
TwoBit··on Bette Graham, inventor and founder of Liquid Paper
Maybe it would have initially sold better with that name. Or maybe not, given how product naming and advertising was so bland back then.
TwoBit··on FDA finds wood pulp in major American parmesan cheese brands (2016)
Why the $100K fine then?
TwoBit··on The disappearance of a Soviet skiing party in 1959
I wish people would step back from conspiracy thinking and trying so hard to explain specific injuries and apply some occam's razor logic. eg people freaked out by an avalanche are going to bolt in their underwear; simplest explanation.
TwoBit··on The disappearance of a Soviet skiing party in 1959
> it makes little sense for Igor, Zina and Rustem to climb back up the slope in a weakened state if they knew the tent was inaccessible from tons of frozen snow on top of it.

That's a speculative statement. "it makes little sense" as an argument is weak on its own, but is 10x weaker when it's based on supposition you just invented regarding the state of their tent and their somehow knowing that state well.

TwoBit··on Why you can’t buy a thermapen on Amazon (2016)
I don't understand the downvotes. I have an $18 Amazon food thermometer which has read with identical speed and accuracy as my Thermapen for years. And I like it better because the Thermapen is a pain to switch between F and C whereas it's simply a face button on the cheap one.

TwoBit··on ABI Mistakes
Are you saying that in C a callee can cast a const pointer to non-const and write to it and that's sanctioned by the Standard?
