Trombone12··on The Colorado mystery drones weren’t real
He said "drone", and surely it wasn't simply a point light that Myers observed, but rather a perceptibly extended object at least?

So did this credible Myers also demonstrated the about 6 cm diameter binoculars needed to resolve a 20 metre "drone" 25 miles away? Or maybe he was using a 30 cm telescope to resolve a 5 metre drone?

Trombone12··on Starlink Is a Big Deal
ITT:

> Too poor to make stove out of bricks

> Goes spend full day per week to go an check on their bitcoin transactions

Uh, are you sure you have a grounded understanding of what rural poverty means?

Trombone12··on Starlink Is a Big Deal
Yeah, all that talk about free internet for all the poor and oppressed sounds pretty suspicious set beside the claims that starlink is supposed to make money too. How will a rural Guatemalan farmer that cooks on a three stones fire provide any sort of profit?
Trombone12··on Starlink Is a Big Deal
> Too bad we have to give up the night sky for it, though.

Oh, I wasn't aware we were getting any choice in the matter? Isn't this SpaceX just putting whatever they want up there?

Trombone12··on Demoscene, the secret behind Finnish game industry
If there is any connection, it will not be as simple as "darkness == demoscene". If there is any connection it will be that winters and bright summers get you used to just staying inside with blinds down all year.
Trombone12··on Portability and Interoperability
Copyright is no less a concrete concept, and that can have single owners, so this is already a somewhat solved problem.

Invoking rights helps nothing, ownership is already inherently about who has rights, so all you do is muddle the meaning of "own" by diluting it.

Trombone12··on “Banclist.com is probably the most lucrative direct messaging platform”
To me the scope seems rather narrow, and the technical requirements about on par with a mailing list.
Trombone12··on Halley: Lightweight Game Engine Written in C++14
Right, tell that to your semiconductor based computing device.
Trombone12··on Could 'Oumuamua be an icy fractal aggregate ejected from a protoplanetary disk?
At that level of detail you could just be chanting "god did it" over and over, it comes out to about the same explanatory power.
Trombone12··on Grave Concerns Over White House Efforts to Transfer Nuclear Tech to Saudi Arabia
Uh, no. Pretty textbook nuclear proliferation, the KSA doesn't have the required treaties with the IAEA to buy a nuclear power plant from responsible parties of the NPT.

This doesn't matter to Bolton of course, because he simply hates international treaties on pure principle.

Trombone12··on Grave Concerns Over White House Efforts to Transfer Nuclear Tech to Saudi Arabia
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia don't have the agreements with the IAEA required for a party to the non-proliferation treaty to sell them regulated technology as they currently don't have any nuclear facilities.

But you know how Trump is with international treaties; I'd guess this is mostly about letting nuclear tech companies sell regulated tech in violation of the conditions of the NTP.

Trombone12··on Grave Concerns Over White House Efforts to Transfer Nuclear Tech to Saudi Arabia
Who ever? It's the Trump administration, says so right at the top.
Trombone12··on Could 'Oumuamua be an icy fractal aggregate ejected from a protoplanetary disk?
Well, there is this entire science describing the universe and how it works you see, and that science makes certain prediction about things like how easy it is to kick something out of a star system and how likely a rock thrown in a random direction on the other side of the galaxy is to hit a our particular sun.
Trombone12··on Could 'Oumuamua be an icy fractal aggregate ejected from a protoplanetary disk?
Uh, what? Plait makes the important point that the light curve is hard to explain without tumbling, and if the "sail" is tumbling the entire acceleration calculation presented in the paper is shit. Kind of a big deal.
Trombone12··on Magic Lantern
Big cpu means shit battery time, and thus a shit camera. And locking into a specific hardware configuration in a field that is basically all about making hardware developments seems kind of short sighted.
Trombone12··on Magic Lantern
Are you actually, and unironically, suggesting that cameras should be replaced by smartphones? I mean, edit on a camera? If that is a serious use case for you then you can make do with your smartphone, you don't actually need the accuracy of dedicated hardware and optics.
Trombone12··on Magic Lantern
Yeah, I was happily expecting an interesting radio station, and instead got a disappointing SPA about camera software :(
Trombone12··on EU Copyright: Block Everything, Never Make Mistakes, but Don't Use Upload Filter
So how are the click troughs on the amp stories doing in the land of the free?
Trombone12··on Do I really need to get out the soldering-iron again?
Were would that go? The author doesn't seem too keen on actually soldering on the inside of the devices, and they all give analogue out. Maybe you meant an amp?
Trombone12··on Picture houses: a last glimpse of Moscow’s beautiful and derelict Soviet cinemas
Well, they are derelict. When derelict house you become, look as well you will not, hm?
Trombone12··on Picture houses: a last glimpse of Moscow’s beautiful and derelict Soviet cinemas
There is not a single concrete facade among those pictures, so that seems a strange question to ask.

In any case, the answer is of course that concrete cubicles can be made both poorly or with great skill.

Trombone12··on Tricks That Can Outsmart Deepfake Videos for Now
That sounds useful for making porn to sell, but what is the point of making your own sextape if you can't tell it's you on it? There is already loads of porn...
Trombone12··on Seals Used to Protect Voting Machines Can Be Opened With a Shim from a Soda Can
For paper ballots you can't usually manipulate them ahead of time to record an fraudulent vote, and you need to sneak around with a big box of votes which is just logistically more challenging.
Trombone12··on Are Black Holes Actually Dark Energy Stars?
A article about "alternative" black holes without the word LIGO in it? Yeah, I'm gonna have to stop you right there and ask you to sell that snek oil somewhere else.
Trombone12··on Are Black Holes Actually Dark Energy Stars?
That makes no sense, black holes are like super much the opposite of a void. Further, repulsion is precisely the opposite of gravity.
Trombone12··on For 11 Years, the Soviet Union Had No Weekends
> It’s quite possible, argues Eviatar Zerubavel [...] that the calendar reform tied into a traditional Marxist aversion toward the family.

Oh, right. This is from history.com, known from the Aliens-meme, so I shouldn't expect they asked someone who would actually know about the background...

Trombone12··on Supply Chain Security Is the Whole Enchilada, but Who’s Willing to Pay for It?
No, but it matters that you can't get any because some adversary decides to cut your supply. Protecting your supply by force is obviously easier if the source is within the borders of your country.

This is the basic reasoning of every "national security" argument about having domestic production.

The parent is merely stating that basic necessities are also important for the well-being of the nation, it's not just about the IC for ballistic missiles or the 3G circuits that allows Trump to always be on twitter.

Trombone12··on The Python Unicode Mess
This just reflects your experience of only speaking english, to most of the world their native language is not and edge case.
Trombone12··on Making sense of the alleged Supermicro motherboard attack
If the chip was found by a contractor of Apple then Bloomberg has indeed asserted something that is factually wrong. But it is not a materially important error, and calling it a "new assertion from whole cloth" is severely overstating the magnitude of the error.

If someone that is talking about bash called linux for "a unix", I don't think most people would support your stance that they made completely baseless statement.

Trombone12··on An Elaborate Academic-Journal Hoax
Well, they claim to have targeted "top journals" in the field, but it's not like "intersectional gender studies" is a particularly big field.

I looked up two journals they had published in and their articles got less than one citation per year typically ([1]&[2]), not exactly a booming field.
