Trias11··on Ask HN: When do you give up on Silicon Valley?
Does your FAANG support you working remotely?

I moved to Vegas from CA and twisted some arms in upper management/HR of my company to keep my salary.

Most HR's has abusive practices to cut salary if you move to cheaper place but if you have personal connections and good relationships in upper management you can solve it.

Benefits are clear.

Trias11··on Ask HN: Is the touch screen a bad input device or it's a generational thing?
Touch screen is silly.

I don't belong to profession that need to be productive via touching computer screen.

I'd pay more for non-touch screen laptop.

Accidental touches can and does screw things.

Just got a new touch screen laptop and hope to find a way to disable toucheability

Also natively supporting ZeroTier, which is a must for me
Trias11··on Ubiquiti is suing Brian Krebs for his reporting on their breach
Off my shopping list.
Trias11··on Ask HN: Is Apple low-balling me or am I an impostor greedy bastard?
If this is reasonably acceptable but you think you worth more, accept it and continue looking.

But then you'll have big advantage of FAANG in your resume to boost your income.

If Apple is indeed lowballing you - you'll be able to quickly find out by the virtue of better offers from others.

Trias11··on Ask HN: What would you do with a million dollars today?
Buy second and possibly third passport and establish solid residency and business presence offshore to widen my choices and freedoms.
Trias11··on Ask HN: I'm in a position to move to anywhere in the USA, where should I go?
Stay away from liberal states. Usually high taxes and crimes. Many (but not all) of these however are good weather too. Not sure about your income and whether obscene income tax is a concern - but there are good states with no state income tax.
Trias11··on DEV-0537 targeting organizations for data exfiltration and destruction
LAPSUS, likely from russian: "ляпсус" translated as Blunder
Trias11··on Tell HN: A $40B company killed my 2yo son. Now they force me to keep silent
Unrelated (and apologies for stepping out of the post' subject), but I lived in multiple countries and then in states within USA.

In Vegas now and Republic Services' drivers in Las Vegas are the most considerate, accomodating and friendly people.

Granted I live in more friendly Vegas neighborhood but compare to CA and other places i lived in - here it's such a positive surprise.

Must be the new business model invented by genius putin.
Trias11··on Employers who violate Colorado’s non-compete laws face stiff new penalties
Second thing California ought to be loved for.

First one is the weather.

Trias11··on Dell deletes Latitude CPU Throttling issue after link is posted here
CC chargeback.

Zero f*cks given. Sell me crap, pay for it yourself.

Trias11··on Ask HN: Have you ever sold a domain-name? How was your experience selling it?
Sold few. One for crypto, few via escrow.com

Last time escrow had a problem depositing money to my bank account because "the account number you provided had too many zeros in front of it and our system cut it down".

So change your stupid system so it won't corrupt essential customer banking information!

Otherwise it went well.

Trias11··on You can change your number
Exactly. Honeypot developed by spying entity.

Otherwise anonymous usernames + passwords would perfectly do.

Trias11··on You can change your number
Just because "every platform and app is doing that" doesn't mean secure communication solution should.
Trias11··on You can change your number
If I'd be a spying agency I'd do just that - develop "secure" app that would collect unique identity of every user. Verified phone number is a perfect unique ID.

"Just give your phone number to us, and don't worry, we won't share it with anyone!".

That exactly what Signal does.

Until they allow user-created ID's with no link to any identity - the above concern stays.

Trias11··on You can change your number
STOP asking for my phone number to use your "secure" app.

I don't want to disclose my phone number to any user, platform or any app.

Just please STOP.

Trias11··on Boston Fed releases report, source code of digital currency prototype study
They don't need much of a difference. Just more control.
Trias11··on Ask HN: Any piece of hardware that was more of game changer than you expected?
One Mix 4 micro laptop. I bought i5 version of it on aliexpress however amazon has higher end version of it (i7) available.

9" or so screen, full blown windows 11 laptop, extremely well built, solid. I upgraded it to Windows 11 Pro myself just for fun so I could RDP to it and control it remotely.

I bought it for narrow use case (need to control hardware device that doesn't have mobile app) and extremely pleased on how fully functioning, well built it is.

It could fit into large enough pocket and if you're in need of SMALLEST device as fully featured Windows-based computer - that's the answer.

Drawbacks: no webcam (this is plus for me actually) and small battery life (ask me which power bank i chose to solve this issue).

Trias11··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
Quite often you want to communicate with the person on the other end without disclosing your identity.

Communication platform that enforces "KYC"-like disclosure to the platform itself is misleading their users about security.

Trias11··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
Agree.

Stop using word "security" or "end to end" encryption and then enforcing me to disclose my phone number to use your "secure" app.

This is scam.

Trias11··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
Slack.

It's idiotic handling of direct messages history with its enforced uneditable limit of number of conversations shown, previous conversations disappear and become unsearchable cost me waste time, wasted nerves and wasted communications.

Trias11··on Google Maps now requires WiFi scanning to use navigation
Waze is owned by google.
Trias11··on Tell HN: We have a responsibility to speak out against blockchain technologies
You should print this on a big poster and walk on the street carrying ringing bell in your arm, trying to attract attention.
Trias11··on Facebook page unpublished with no warning
+100

Yet after reading all the scary stories people keep flocking to all the FAANG-y platforms expecting some mercy.

You're on a mercy of some glitchy AI and some random, lousy, unreachable fact checker.

Act with that knowledge.

Trias11··on Scary fraud ensues when ID theft and usury collide
BofA account receiving money was NOT HIS!

It would be very easy to verify and confirm for a bank.

This should be the end of the story. If bank would've been on a hook - they'd look way more carefully on it.

Trias11··on Ask HN: Does anybody allow websites to “Send Notifications”?
Same with cookies. Deny max to remain usable automatically.
Trias11··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
>> And they'll throw their users under the bus

You cannot really throw users under the bus in highly competitive and lucrative space.

It's not that difficult to export full data from 1password and move on.

Trias11··on Ask HN: A good and thoughtful place to discuss cryptocurrencies?
... Plus the moment you type any crypto-related statement or question you'll get flood of contacts from "friendly" individuals willing to help you to part your crypto from your wallet
Trias11··on Ask HN: How to make more than $1mn+/yr as a software engineer? (2022 Edition)
Latter two are the most misleading belief that caused tons of disappointments.

FAANG, or couple months Pre-IPO with clearly defined vesting without typical startup trickery leaving option holder employees with an empty bags.
