TriangleEdge··on Ask HN: How do you prevent the impact of social media on your children?
You don't. I have a baby and a teenager and the teenager is pretty mind-rotted even tho mild restrictions were in place. Kids don't exist in a vacuum and you will only have strong influence over them until they turn 12 or so in my experience. The environment they are in matters a lot. Other kids, etc.. I am very worried about the future of my baby. My main concern is that he'll have a hard time being useful since automation looks like it'll do everything soon enough. Purposeless people are not good.
TriangleEdge··on Justin Trudeau promises to resign as PM
I got a TN while working for big tech, met my wife, got married, and got a married based GC. The GC took 2 years.
TriangleEdge··on Justin Trudeau promises to resign as PM
I have migrated from Canada to the USA and my metrics for wealth, ease of mind, actually working while at work, outgoingness, etc instantly improved. I don't plan on ever going back. I feel chagrin at seeing Canada fail. I'm glad to see Justin Trudeau pressured out, I know there won't be meaningful change associated with the decision, but I have hope.
TriangleEdge··on Olympians turn to OnlyFans to fund dreams due to 'broken' finance system (2024)
> On one hand you want to provide livable wages to your athletes

Why? Sports are just another form of entertainment for others. Same as any other performance artist.

TriangleEdge··on Olympians turn to OnlyFans to fund dreams due to 'broken' finance system (2024)
Opinion: I stopped thinking the olympics was cool when I saw a 14 year old win gold in diving. Now I think it's a business exploiting people for money. Like any other business, if they don't like it they can stop doing it. Sports has a bad ROI on average afaik.
TriangleEdge··on China is the manufacturing superpower
Forgive my ignorance, but how does a country with a strong military turn that into GDP? I don't understand how military > manufacturing in terms of GDP. In my mind, manufacturing > military, but my knowledge of economics isn't great.
TriangleEdge··on Pornhub Is Now Blocked in Almost All of the U.S. South
> ... is legitimate and goes out of their way to remove problem content ...

This is blatantly not true. I know because I've reported a clearly illegal video on every avenue I could find (the report button, emailing support, etc..) and the video was only taken down when PornHub removed all videos expect the verified ones some years ago.

TriangleEdge··on Ask HN: Resources for general purpose GPU development on Apple's M* chips?
Why not OpenCL or OpenGL? You'll not be constrained by the flavor of GPU.
TriangleEdge··on MIT study explains why laws are written in an incomprehensible style
I always thought it was because of narcissism. I didn't see it as casting an authority spell over others.
TriangleEdge··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
America is so prosperous that there's armed guards in grocery stores here in Seattle.
TriangleEdge··on The deterioration of Google
I don't feel like this article has much interesting information even tho I agree with the premise.

I've been using AI tools to search now. I barely ever use a raw search bar anymore.

TriangleEdge··on Javier Milei: "My contempt for the state is infinite"

TriangleEdge··on Congress hears testimony on aliens
I think the mixture of loyalty and psychopathy from government employees makes a weird mind landscape for people outside these institutions. The belief "the government has secrets and is keeping them from us" cannot be easily refuted. When I was in university, I had a professor that used to make jokes about how people who think the government is spying on everyone wore tin foil hats.

I am thoroughly annoyed by the title of the article: The government hears testimonies from government employees about government work! I'm saddened that this is considered newsworthy.

TriangleEdge··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Finished a project that serves as a launching pad for GoLang HTTP APIs. It does decoding of request parameters into structs using instructions found in tags amongst a bunch of other utilities.

I am learning react-native now. Just finished building a themed components library.

These are for building a simple intelligence platform. Intelligence meaning a way to model entities, events, documents, and the link between them.

I want to use this instead of having thousands of documents on dropbox organized by a random folder hierarchy.

TriangleEdge··on Reflections on Palantir
I worked as an FDE for govt deployments. I am writing this as a warning to others. I got drugged without consent, _twice_, while working for Palantir. Palantir sells software to demons, so take my warning as you will. The first time was minor, but the second time was major, and I'm still hurt from it.
TriangleEdge··on AT&T, Verizon reportedly hacked to target US govt wiretapping platform
The article didn't say but I'm guessing the target could of been JSI Telecom. I knew some people that worked for JSI ~10 years ago and the US govt used their platform in a handful of organizations.
TriangleEdge··on Llms.txt
Why are they still referred to as "large"? They are just language models. AFAIK, the large word is because comp sci people struggled for many years to handle the size. The large word is also unscientific and arbitrary.

Please change it to just lms.txt.

TriangleEdge··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I am building the roots of an open source app for decentralized intelligence. Think git but for intelligence. Building it for myself since I'm becoming forgetful.
TriangleEdge··on AT&T says criminals stole phone records of 'nearly all' customers in data breach
When are we going to see the technical report of what happened? Since this data has a specific time frame, it makes sense to me that a backup was stolen. But, we'll see.

My guess is that the tech leaders a AT&T are going to have sore wrists for a few minutes because of this.

TriangleEdge··on Public perception of scientists' credibility in the US has gone down
The covid situation made my trust of public figures who call themselves scientists go to 0.
TriangleEdge··on It's getting harder to die
I'd like to see a survey about opinions on keeping people alive using modern medicine. The survey would have a filter for people who believe in evolution and survival of the fittest. How is the cognitive dissonance around it resolved?
TriangleEdge··on YouTube is A/B testing limiting logged out access to videos
I don't know for sure, but I assume the people of Google like that there isn't much of an alternative to YT. Waging war on your users seem to be a bad way to keep your monopoly. I'd accept that the reason YouTube is adding more friction is because the revenueOfNewChanges() > currentRevenue(). To me, it seems that YouTube is in a "race to the bottom" to hit the dopamine receptor of the masses. It's why it's competing with TikTok.
TriangleEdge··on Ottawa wants the power to create secret backdoors in networks for surveillance
I have some knowledge of the LI (lawful intercept) space. Some USA/Canada agencies/companies uses tools by JSI Telecom to do this. They do deep packet inspection and phone call recording with retention policies set by whatever law the host country has. For calls that are recorded, you cant record chats to lawyers, so a human has to listen to the call and mute it. Some countries don't allow recording, so a human has to listen in on the call live. Blah blah blah.

My opinion is that democracy will die in favor of republics where govts do whatever. Seems to me were heading that way anyway. I find the theater of it tiring.

TriangleEdge··on Priced out of home ownership
In my mind I redefine the housing crisis in Canada as a business clustering problem. I think the percentage of attractive businesses that are concentrated in a few areas is too high. This comes in conflict with the human desire to not live in a sardine can. I would leave my city, but where would I work? My options to have a dignified life feel limited to me, especially in tech. Tech bros like me are pretty constrained to cities, which I really don't like.
TriangleEdge··on Priced out of home ownership
Canada has had a "housing crisis" for 15 years now. The main campaigning ground of the opposition are issues with housing.
TriangleEdge··on Show HN: HackerNews but for research papers
Feedback: The UI on mobile could be improved. I find the website distracting as a whole. I seems like it was built for children. I think the colors are bad.
TriangleEdge··on YouTube seems to once again be rolling out its widely hated new web redesign
Not a fan of this one. Is this a race to the bottom because of TikTok? The bottom videos sticking out are gross to me.
TriangleEdge··on A Canadian lobby group is promoting "widespread adoption of age verification"
My loose train of thought:

0: I have not seen any data to show this would work. Kids would just buy and sell usb sticks filled with porn.

1: Life is already good in Canada, except for the housing situation and low wages.

2: People have a need to feel special and politicians are people.

3: Some people meet their need to feel special by changing their surroundings.

4: Since Canada is already good, except for wages and housing, and politicians can't figure out a way to fix that, they're meeting their need to feel special by being controversial.

5: Debating controversial subjects makes politicians feel special and important.

Conclusion: The root cause of this is narcissism.

TriangleEdge··on FTC says Amazon executives destroyed potential evidence using apps like Signal
I could be wrong, but my assumption is that tech companies with a lot of talent develop their own messaging apps for the execs and friends. Why would they risk using a popular platform? The data could be sent via whatever medium, doesn't need to be ethernet. I also assume this is how most illegal collusion is done as well, unless someone wants to give me other data points.
TriangleEdge··on VASA-1: Lifelike audio-driven talking faces generated in real time
Why is this research being done? Is this some kind of arms race? The only purpose of this technology I can think of is getting spies to abuse others.

Am I going to have to do AuthN and AuthZ on every phone call and zoom now?
