Tozen··on Scientists of Chinese descent leaving the US at an accelerating pace
The way that immigration is handled by many countries is just as bad, if not way worse. So when pointing the finger, many need to also look at the immigration policies of their own countries, to get a balanced perspective.
Tozen··on Error Handling in Zig
A good point. Newer languages influenced by Go, like Vlang[1], have sum types partially for such reasons.

Tozen··on Scientists of Chinese descent leaving the US at an accelerating pace
Agree with the odd framing. Because some Chinese scientists are going back to China, doesn't mean America has lost the game. There is lots of brain power in the world, not only from China. America gets and can get smart immigrants from many other places.
Tozen··on The Windows desktop is dying
Cloud PC is so wonderful, as people give Microsoft perpetual access to all their data and any secrets (mi casa es tu casa), at a much higher yearly cost. Brilliant!

Wonder if Microsoft will find ways to double-dip, and transfer portions or sell their user's data to various governments or businesses, as they please for profit.

Tozen··on Throw away your first draft of your code
A possible alternative is to use a different programming language for doing the prototyping than the one which will be used in production. The urge to hang on to prototype code can be removed, because you are going to do a rewrite in a different language, regardless.

By using 2 different languages, there is more freedom to just make a demo, discuss, and then decide what to keep or what direction to go.

Tozen··on Google’s Plan to DRM the Web Goes Against Everything Google Once Stood For
> ...as companies become less innovative, rather than creating new useful things, they focus on extracting more value however they can, while simultaneously trying to stymie and hold off innovative upstarts.

What makes them "extra" dangerous (or evil), in this this regard, is they have such broad reach and control over the Internet and tools people use in their daily lives that many have no idea to the extent of censorship, manipulation, spying, or damage that is being done. Any perceived rival, threat to their business, or to any of their products can be silenced, censored, or inhibited in ways few will ever know or realize was possible.

And to the extent they can keep getting away with it, is likely the extent they will keep pushing their control and corruption.

Tozen··on Using C++ as a scripting language, part 8
Add Vlang to that list, as another that can compile to web assembly. In addition to having a C2V translator (and some other languages have similar). A number of safer and easier/convenient options are out there for those that care to look.
Tozen··on The New Wave of Programming Languages: Pony, Zig, Crystal, Vlang, & Julia
Partly this is due to corporate controlled media, where newer languages aren't getting the coverage they deserve. We keep getting flooded with the same old languages, as if there is nothing else or new out there. People are often not getting the information on possible options and promising developments.
Tozen··on Japanese population falls in all 47 prefectures for the first time
You are also fighting what has become a tradition and cultural norms. There is a huge struggle to stop companies from committing wage theft (through unpaid extra work hours) or straight out overworking their employees (sometimes to the point of suicide).
Tozen··on Japanese population falls in all 47 prefectures for the first time
For any country, there are still going to be both positives and negatives. The more money you have and make, often the easier things will be for you. If you are rich, a lot of surprising places can be attractive (not just Japan), for various different reasons. Also beware, there is also a difference between official propaganda for tourist dollars and reality, so various parties can seek to drown out any dispelling of myths or hide facets of how things are.

* People are friendly by default

This can be a common mistake made by tourists (or short time visitors). There is a difference between polite for money, cultural fake politeness, and actually more friendly and welcoming than average. Hotel staff can be very polite (as trained to be for money), but that doesn't mean random people on the street, clubs, housing agents, or business owners actually like every or any foreigners. And the extent of politeness or friendliness shown can depend on skin color, known country of origin, or language spoken.

* Very affordable place

This is quite laughable. It depends on your salary and where you are from, but clearly there are cheaper countries in the world than Japan. If you are rich or nearly so, many countries are "affordable".

* Non-free Country versus free world Country

Freedom is relative. For instance, in Japan, police can arrest, question/interrogate (some have claimed torture) you, and hold you for weeks without a lawyer (nor allow you to call one). Compared to other countries, this is quite draconian and backwards. Where for others, that there is any process where you aren't killed at whim or have no to little means to seek true justice, means greater "freedom".

* Comfortable level of tech

While this is quite true, Japan is not the only country that possesses significant technology. The level of street cleanliness, sewer system (like open sewers), garbage collection (dropped on street or in cans), design and width of city streets, safe train systems (protecting passengers from falling/jumping onto tracks), etc... These points all add up and how "comfortable", can be a matter of where you are from and what you were used to.

Tozen··on Japan’s population drops by nearly 800k
> the human population will equal 0 someday because we will have further evolved into something else.

Ah, there are other possible paths. 1) Extinction (which has happened to many species) without any evolutionary successors. 2) Artificial life (it evolves without us). 3) Something else evolves (long after we are gone) and becomes the dominant species on the planet.

Humanity has limited options, but nature doesn't and we can't count on it doing us any favors.

Tozen··on Japan’s population drops by nearly 800k
The other planets, moons, and the rest of the solar system has tons of resources too.
Tozen··on Japan’s population drops by nearly 800k
Why stop at "fewer", with zero, there will be no problems to worry about at all. Besides, humanity is "90 seconds from midnight"[1] as it is. A little more hubris and just the "right kind" of attitude towards each other, and it will achieve the amazingly intelligent and glorious realization of zero population and zero diversity.

Tozen··on Japan’s population drops by nearly 800k
It appears the thought process is an increasingly smaller unchanging bubble containing "pure bloods" will be maintained, as the country slowly dwindles towards irrelevance or economic collapse. And apparently, some prefer to go out that way.
Tozen··on Japan’s population drops by nearly 800k
It's the opposite. Many/increasingly old and fewer young. With a strong anti-immigration and persistent anti-foreigner/xenophobic mindset.
Tozen··on 100% coral mortality found in coral reef off Florida as ocean temperatures soar
Articles like these are laughed off. Somehow, putting more money in the pockets of oil companies is a priority, not the environment or future generations. Watching the polluting and destruction of the environment, or an increasing grim future for humanity, is like joke material. Coral reefs... LMAO?!?!
Tozen··on Hair dye and chemical straightener use and breast cancer risk (2019)
I'm confused by your analysis. For black women, it's not just hair dye, but they have hair straightener products that have companies putting some very toxic and carcinogenic stuff into them. So black women can be putting themselves at greater risk, if they use such chemical straighteners (they do have non/less toxic options).

It also indicates that black women are less likely to get breast cancer than white women, but when they do, they are more likely to die from it for a whole bunch of reasons. To include factors like time of diagnosis, quality, or cost of medical care.

> For me, this leaves the question open if one is comparing apples with apples, as I don't see the formulation for the developer accounted for.

Here, I agree with you. Clearly what the companies are putting into the products vary significantly. That by itself, might be worthy of more study as to what's gong on. Dumping more toxic and carcinogenic chemicals into the product, would seem to clearly increase risk. For consumers, they need a guide as to what products and ingredients are safer or more dangerous. Looks like certain ingredients arguably need cancer warnings or some kind of warning on the label.

Tozen··on Why Men Get So Few Matches on Dating Apps [video]
Not quite sure what's trying to be accomplished by giving an odd definition/description of hypergamy. Even wikipedia contains[1], "the overall practice of women marrying up...". Here's also some articles (by female authors) that explains what's usually going on in regards to hypergamy[2][3].

Attempting to date someone who is more attractive, is much more about opinion and is relative, so is harder to quantify. Where it's much clearer how much money is actually in someone's or their family's bank account, net worth, or who makes more money.

Tozen··on Why Men Get So Few Matches on Dating Apps [video]
There's lot of evidence of dating sites doing this, such as having people working for them to string male customers along for money. It's arguably fraud. There are also many other ways to take advantage of desperate or lonely men (or "picky" women with some marketing twists), such as suggesting or advertising to customers they pay even more money for things like "boost", "VIP", "gold membership", etc... These more costlier options also give an incentive to do fraudulent things like having paid (usually female) responders fake interest in paying customers (usually male) for a set time and then go ghost or flake.

Speaking of fraudulent, so are many of the profiles and descriptions, both male and female. Profiles and descriptions often are highly distorted, with out of control female hypergamy. Everybody trying to present themselves as better than the other or elite, even when they are average or below average in reality.

80% to 85% of the women on a site looking for the top 20% to 15% of men, thus many don't really qualify nor match up for what they are looking for. Consequently, such "lower ranking" women can get taken advantage of by the top 15% who run through them (sometimes at incredible numbers) or will never commit to them, then these angry hurt women take it out on all other men that had nothing to with their past. Thus they are "full of old scars", "super extra picky" or "flaky".

For all the time and money wasted on fake and distorted profiles, it's better to invest in getting over one's fear of rejection and learn how to approach people appropriately and have natural conversations. Find free ways to meet and talk, there are plenty, if a person puts their mind and effort into it. At least don't have online dating, especially costly sites, be the only option.

Tozen··on Why Men Get So Few Matches on Dating Apps [video]
I have to agree with the sentiment that men attempting to only or overuse online dating are doing themselves a disservice. They need to develop the confidence and skill to approach women and have natural conversations.

Men are severely limiting themselves and distorting their reality, because lots of online sites are wasting their time and money. The ratio of women in many sites are low, lots of disguised prostitution, lots of pranksters wasting people's time, paid geeks (other men) to just string customers along, etc...

Tozen··on Val, a high-level systems programming language
Not only did detractors flag away my previous response that agreed with your point about how V delivers, but based on their MO (preoccupation with 2019, same catch phrases, and constantly spamming the same certain sites), it's likely the same group and their dedicated accounts for such purposes. They are trying very hard to push a negative narrative and eliminate the public viewing of any counter or supportive arguments.
Tozen··on Study finds billions of nanoplastics released when microwaving containers
It's really past time to stop putting more money in the overstuffed pockets of oil companies. Biocompatible plastic alternatives, should have long been an option. More people need to use glass containers, particularly for food or drinks, when viable. Constantly consuming microplastics, is clearly a health disaster.
Tozen··on Coroutines for Go
Arguably, one can't truly say the GC is optional, unless the language and its libraries were designed to work without it. In languages like Vlang, that's the case, as the GC was added later. If turning the GC off cripples the functionality and usefulness of the language, then there is little point in using the option or claiming it as optional.

Probably a better argument for Go (and other languages like Java) is how "tweakable" the GC is or at least describe it as the GC can be turned off, but it's not designed or useful to do so.

Tozen··on Val, a high-level systems programming language
Nonsensical, including telling someone else which languages starting with the letter "V" can't be on their list.

As for reading the issues and pull request section, just about all languages have them. So everybody must be "blind", especially younger languages. Which comparatively by age, other languages have more issues and worse close ratios.

> You sound quite “conspiracy theory” with this...

It's not based on conspiracy or throwing out a quick unresearched opinion to just smite someone. It's based on search, and reading posts made on HN (over the years).

> (exaggerates for marketing purposes like getting funding) will just get downvoted....

> (not vapour), clearly points out it’s not ready for use, but has big ideas...

The difference is, being consistent with handing out such punishments (downvoting) and giving negative labels (vapor). Treat all the languages the same or equally apply those rules, otherwise the hypocrisy shows itself. Don't be so angry or surprised that someone may comment on it or point it out.

And when using terms like "vapor", let it be one's original thought, and not what is supplied by others painting a certain narrative.

Tozen··on Val, a high-level systems programming language
Very true. So many languages people haven't heard of. It's like if not in the top 10 or 20, some think they don't matter.

In regards to Eiffel, always felt that hindrance to wider adoption was more about the licensing. Still, they are in business and in use.

Tozen··on Val, a high-level systems programming language
Hard to argue against the truth or the reality of it.
Tozen··on Val, a high-level systems programming language
How things can go down on HN strikes me as odd, and this seems to be an example. "People" suddenly seem to be quite supportive of: 1) Has not released an alpha yet and after a year. 2) Website that promises a lot (like 2-way C++ interoperability). 3) Clearly telling people it will have trouble supporting the Windows OS. 4) Has relatively limited stars and contributors on GitHub. 5) Wishlists and promises are suddenly fine by them.

Then for other languages its media blackout, hate, and an avalanche of trolling. I suppose the hidden machinery and utility accounts don't come out, unless "they" perceive an actual threat to its position.

Don't get me wrong, love new languages and seeing more competition. People should follow their dreams. Just weirds me out, as to how reactions and perception goes.

Tozen··on Samsung's 4 nm process node achieves yield rates of 75 percent
Actually good news, because of the problem of if a war broke out over Taiwan (TSMC location). More diversity in the supply chain, is safer.
Tozen··on Windows 11 collects an awful lot of telemetry about your PC
Not necessarily, if using 3rd party tools to stop telemetry or to check settings. Though I do agree that Microsoft likes to re-enable whatever settings as they please after updates.
