TophWells··on Teen to government: Change your typeface, save millions
I think $100M per year makes up for those side effects.

There will always be people whose workflows are interrupted by a new change, and legacy systems that don't like it for their own reasons. There are already systems in place to handle their complaints, because this is an expected part of any change in a large organisation, and is barely worth mentioning.

TophWells··on Kinematics Bodice
The 3D printed stuff I've handled had a very unpleasant grain - rather like rough wood. I could feel the sub-millimeter layers that it was built up in, and they're not quite perfectly lined up. I don't know how difficult it is to 3D print stuff that feels pleasantly smooth.
TophWells··on Too much JavaScript
No flashy adverts - static images are so much less distracting. A few places use animated GIFs, but they're a minority among minorities.
TophWells··on Expired Domains – Sorted by Original Registration Year
There's more behind the login wall.
TophWells··on Show HN: Tetris with a twist
"It's electric" is by far the best variation.

It should probably have been clearer what the different buttons at the start do. I selected "Classic", and then spent quite a while looking for the twist. I'd assumed you were letting me choose the graphics or something like that.

TophWells··on WTF does this code do?
It doesn't seem to do anything.
TophWells··on Mt. Gox's Bitcoins are being sold on Bitstamp?
>It's a very interesting development as it shows that stolen bitcoins can be tracked indefinitely unlike FIAT.

You can track dollar bills by their serial number. It's basically the same thing as what's going on here, except that few people record the serial numbers of their bills.

TophWells··on Mt. Gox's Bitcoins are being sold on Bitstamp?
Correct.
TophWells··on Mt. Gox's Bitcoins are being sold on Bitstamp?
Whether or not it's the same thing, it uses the same mechanics. You can link the output of one transaction to the input of the next, and construct a chain of transactions that says "This 0.125 BTC transaction uses bitcoins that were originally stolen from MtGox / bitcoins that were originally in the pile designated as marking ownership of my shares of stock".

The question is whether that's a meaningful thing to measure. If you have bitcoins that are more valuable than normal, because they're shares of stock, then you'll make sure they're not mixed with "normal" coins. That's the idea of the Coloured Coins project. But if you have bitcoins that are less valuable than normal, because they're stolen goods, then you'll try hard to disguise that fact. You'll immediately spend them on goods or currency, or deposit them into a Coinbase account and then withdraw them later (so you get different coins back), or just throw them into a mixer with the other coins that need to be laundered.

The person who ends up holding the tainted coins could be perfectly honest, and have acquired them from a perfectly honest source, who in turn acquired them from a perfectly honest source. Is it fair to tell them that their money is suddenly worthless, when they had no way of knowing anything was wrong?

TophWells··on 2048: The Nihilistic Face Of Free To Play
Yes, if you're selling your stuff on the free market you shouldn't expect that your competitors will go easy on you. If they do, somebody somewhere is probably violating an antitrust law.
TophWells··on Mercator puzzle
There's some odd behaviour when a country ends up over the South Pole. Apparently it turns inside-out.
TophWells··on Show HN: I made an HTML5 game (not anoter 2048 clone)
It won't load, the bar just stops about a third of the way across.

Fun times. I love the Scramble button, despite its tendency to produce unprintable characters.

TophWells··on XPrize up for Artificial Intelligence that can give a TED talk
The topic isn't known in advance. The robot has to prepare a speech on a specified topic without human interaction.
TophWells··on 2048 Numberwang
i is a real number, it's one-fifth of v.
TophWells··on 1125899906842624
The target number is 2^50, and the grid is 64x64, so I think this should be fairly easy to beat if you ignore the fact that it'll take about ten million years at one move per second.

You've got a bug somewhere.

TophWells··on Ask HN: Do web app yourself – is it relevant?
>Give a way to non-professional programmer to create simple web application.

Sounds like a good idea. Wait...

>(JSON format)

What is this JSON of which you speak? It sounds like programming to me! I won't have any of it!

I don't see why or how you want to get non-programmers interested in your programming environment. Rails already has a way to create simple web apps in a few minutes, but I don't know any non-programmers who use it. What's different about this, apart from the fact that you can write killer web apps starting from the code that "rails generate" produces?

TophWells··on My Efforts to solve "Travelling salesman problem" through JavaScript
Your English is a bit stilted in places - "Just check that the distance from A-B and B-A are not equal because it is the distance related to road.".

And I'm getting Application Errors too.

TophWells··on Google Will Eat Itself
>Or you could include these regional conventions in the character encoding, so that each file knows how it represent its numbers, and enforce them consistently throughout applications.

So if I open a file in Notepad and type 400,123 (using the comma on my keyboard), what character encoding should that be done with?

TophWells··on Flappy 2048 in HTML5 Canvas
I don't get it. I can click on Flappy Bird to play there, and move tiles in 2048 to play there, but there doesn't seem to be any interaction between the two.
TophWells··on How to create 2D visibility/shadow effects for your game
That's not a hack, that's actually the best way to do it. And it can work with more complex shapes (even non-convex ones) as long as you can find the tangent points - which isn't always easy.
TophWells··on How to create 2D visibility/shadow effects for your game
Maybe you forgot it because it's so simple?
TophWells··on 2048
I know someone was working on an AI that plays Threes (the game that inspired this one). Haven't seen any code from him though.

TophWells··on [dead]
A bit slow. Even on the fastest setting, it only does about two generations per second.
TophWells··on Learn regular expressions in about 55 minutes
Forgot about that one.
TophWells··on Learn regular expressions in about 55 minutes
Agreed, but 55 minutes isn't going to make anyone a master of anything. The title is honest.
TophWells··on Learn regular expressions in about 55 minutes
Well, remember that it also has to fit in the row/column. If there's three spaces available, the string has to have three characters. So (O|RM|HHM)* can only really match ORM, RMO, and HHM.
TophWells··on Ask HN: Did pay-to-play games really ruin the gaming industry?
Let's talk about Team Fortress 2, Valve's first big F2P game.

The model is this: If you play for long enough, you'll receive new equippable weapons at random times. You can trade these with other players, craft them together to create different items, or simply buy them with real money. So far so standard.

What's interesting is that the non-default weapons are all balanced against each other. In theory, players who grinded for a long time or paid real money are still on an equal footing with players who joined the game yesterday - actual skill at the game notwithstanding. In practice, mistakes are made (the Soldier's default melee weapon is a lot weaker than all the available alternates, although the alternates are all roughly equal in power), but the idea is there.

And there are items that can only be earned through the shop, or as part of one-time giveaways, or by earning achievements in different games. But all of those are either completely useless (hats and badges), or cosmetic variations on existing items. Their value is not that they make the player stronger, but they simply tell other players "I have something you don't have".

TF2 demonstrates that pay-to-play can be done right. It's simply a matter of striking the balance between creating something that lots of people will play and creating something that earns a lot of money per player. Unfortunately, in the mobile world, 10 mediocre apps are a lot more profitable than 1 excellent app, so there's little incentive to create quality. That's the real problem, not pay-to-play.

TophWells··on Ask HN: how would you supercharge the humble browser textarea?
Ah, I see. The solutions linked above certainly claim to be easy to install, but I got lazy and didn't finish the job when I tried them out. It certainly ought to be possible to set them up with a single line of JavaScript - I can't understand why the sample code doesn't work for me. But fair enough, you were right and I was wrong.

And there's an opening in the market for an easy-to-use easy-to-install JavaScript text editor. Perhaps we should make one.
