Toorkit··on Balancing Outdoor Risky Play and Injury Prevention in Childhood Development
All the way back in kindergarten, we went on walks to places and us kids, ages 4-6, were taught how to navigate safely. Stay on the sidewalk, wait for the green light. Look left, right, left again (unless you're in the UK. I guess...)

Under these conditions, I don't understand why it matters how big the car is. Teach your children not to cross the road.

I spent hours roaming the streets on my bike as a kid in Germany, now I hear my coworkers saying things like "I don't leave my 10 year old unsupervised for more than 10 minutes. If I have to go somewhere, he's coming with me."

It leaves me flabbergasted.

Toorkit··on Modeless Vim
I've done Esc-on-single-press-Ctrl-on-hold once, but some games don't recognize the Esc press. Couldn't get to a menu anymore :P

Currently just have Esc on the CapsLock.

Toorkit··on YouTube is loading slower for users with ad blockers yet again
Welp, I don't go on YouTube when I'm strapped for time anyway :)
Toorkit··on There is an OOM kill count in Linux
I recently installed Linux on my main desktop again. After freezing up twice in a week, I looked around.

I enabled systemd-oom, but it hasn't been necessary, because I also enabled zram as a swap device. I've seen it compress multiple gb of ram into a few hundred mb and haven't frozen my desktop since.

Toorkit··on Firefox Sync actually works
It's not the most compelling feature for me, but I spend 2 hours on the bus every day and love being able to send a bunch of tabs that pop up on my desktop when I get home.
Toorkit··on Posts, profiles, and user search are now available without login
Because furries? The last time I looked at the Mastodon federated timeline I was presented with belly fetish posts lol

Then play with your romantic partner first, 2 minutes later you can work on the project together :^)
Toorkit··on Firefox Is Going to Try and Ship with Wayland Enabled by Default
I'm on an old GTX 1060 I got off eBay years ago. I've only tried Swaywm, as I'm on i3wm right now.

Sway starts, but crashes within seconds. Longest I've got it to run was half an hour before everything froze.

Do any other WM's/DE's work better for old Nvidia cards? I don't particularly want to start installing all the Wayland things out there until one works hah.

I understand Nvidia isn't great for Wayland...

Toorkit··on Tell HN: YouTube's web UI just got even worse
Last time I tried this (a few weeks ago), the procedure turned out to be:

1. play video

2. turn off screen

3. video stops, turn on screen

4. pull down the menu from the top, showing a firefox notification with a play button

5. click play

6. turn off screen again

This is on Android 11, YMMV.

Toorkit··on Mozilla reaffirms that Firefox will continue to support current content blockers
I miss being able to long-press a link and clicking "send link to device."

Now it only lets you send the page you're currently on, which is annoying.

I send a lot of stuff to my desktop when I'm riding the bus.

Toorkit··on Libre Office has 10k followers on Mastodon
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Mastodon, is in fact, ActivityPub/Mastodon, or as I've recently taken to calling it, ActivityPub plus Mastodon.

;-)

Toorkit··on An AI designed keyboard layout (2021)
Everyone thinks I'm crazy. "Just use qwerty, don't be weird. My hands are fine."

But the pain after a few hours typing was horrible, until I moved to Colemak.

Toorkit··on Chat Bubble Blindness
He's being a bit hyperbolic. As I'm also European, I can tell you employees are off doing their own thing. If you do need help, you have to go find one.
Toorkit··on Porting a macOS Clojure Dev Setup to Windows WSL2
I've never understood what drivers you people are "fucking around with". On Windows I have to go to netgears website and download a driver or use the included CD to get my WiFi dongle working. On Linux it works out of the box.

I've always found Windows to be the huge pain in the rear end, not Linux.

Toorkit··on Show HN: Kardius – find people like you, near you – made with Rust and Rocket
Met a guy on Omegle this way and we've been playing games together for 8 years now. Would be interesting to try this and find people close by!
Toorkit··on YouTube Lets Users Override Recommendations After Criticism
Except when it doesn't and you click on it again later only to realize "wait, I watched this."
Toorkit··on Humane by Design
Dark Reader for Firefox sort of does this, I think.
Toorkit··on Oh God, It's Raining Newsletters
I solve this by just keep the tabs open.

I use tree-style tabs, so anything interesting gets stuck in a tree that I can collapse. It might stay there for a month, maybe more.

Eventually I'll either find the time to read/watch/whatever, or realize it doesn't interest me anymore.

Either way, after a while that tree gets closed and the cycle starts over.

Toorkit··on Kitty – a fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
I do something similar. I put any tty's I use in i3wm's scratch buffer and move it to the top. A key press then pops it up like a drop-down window without an animation.

I quite like Kitty compared to urxvt, which I was using before. Just looking at cmatrix, you can tell the difference. Smooth characters dropping down in kitty, sketchy 10fps on urxvt.

The only thing that bothers me is the theme being set in the config file. For urxvt, I put the theme separately in xresources and have a shell alias to change it (which then requires opening a new terminal, but that's what I use tmux for).

Maybe I can do something similar for Kitty, haven't really read the docs.

Toorkit··on In Brazil, it is considered rude to be on time to a party
We used to tell my mother a different time than everyone else for events (an hour early). She'd come right on time!
