ToddWBurgess··on Twitch source code and customer data has reportedly been leaked
You really have to feel bad for the IT staff at Twitch who I expect are going to have a bad day today.
ToddWBurgess··on Facebook-owned sites were down
The they will have to old school it and try a brick.
ToddWBurgess··on Facebook Is Weaker Than We Knew
Instead of quitting social media I used the approach of use it a lot less. I seriously scaled back by Facebook usage and when I did, my mood improved considerably. I chalk it up to not getting all the daily anger and outrage Facebook tries to feed us.

Now that it looks like the worst of the pandemic is behind us (hopefully???), and people start getting out more and seeing people in real life, I think Facebook usage will decline accordingly. Facebook got a serious bump due to the pandemic and now that things are subsiding I expect so will Facebook usage.

As has been pointed out, I think we will see Facebook usage decline in the first world as the existing user base ages out and young people migrate to other platforms. Facebook's growth and popularity will rest with the developing world.

ToddWBurgess··on Death
I was a funeral director in a previous life and literally encountered thousands of bodies in my career. I can say having seen as much death as I have means I am not really too worried about my own demise. My take on thole thing is: living is what happens when you stop worrying about dying.
ToddWBurgess··on Ask HN: Why Did Pascal Fail?
As someone who started their computer science studies with Pascal and then switched to C (I use C for comparison because it was the dominant programming language in 1990s computer science programs) , I can say that C just offered more to the aspiring software developer. For most people who coded in the 90s Pascal meant Turbo Pascal. While the language itself was great, MS-DOS where it ran not so much.

Especially when you compared MS-DOS to Unix (I say Unix because this was before Linux was dominant) systems which most computer science students were being introduced to at the time. With C you got access to all the Unix dev tools and you could do Unix systems programming. I think too a lot of young computer science students go through a phase of all things difficult are good and C on Unix made for a great learning opportunity.

Speaking as myself, the problem was the ecosystem not the language per say. I think for most of us it isn't even a contest between MS-DOS or Unix.

ToddWBurgess··on But down in the underground, you’ll find someone true
That pretty much describes anyone who works in a correctional setting.
ToddWBurgess··on But down in the underground, you’ll find someone true
My mother panicked when she found out I started playing D&D with a friend at high school. She consulted the closest mental health professional she knew which happened to be the psychiatrist at work. The psychiatrist didn't see a problem with it as long as I knew where fantasy and reality were. After hearing that, my mother gave her blessing for me to play D&D. I should probably add that my mother worked in the local jail as a nurse.

So to make a long story short, I couldn't play D&D without getting the approval of a prison psychiatrist.

ToddWBurgess··on Large Unix programs were historically not all that portable between Unixes
Reading this reminds me of the days in the 90s when programs could target 10+ different Unix systems and shipped as giant tar balls of code. The C code consisted of giant #ifdef <UNIX VENDOR> blocks to accommodate how different Unix systems might handle a couple system calls.

It wasn't uncommon for the wrong block of code to get included so you had to figure out how the compile target's system call worked, how your system's system call worked and modify the code accordingly to get it to compile (and hope it worked). This was the 1990s so getting code to compile on Linux wasn't a high priority (since Linux was still in its infancy).

Fun times.

ToddWBurgess··on Writing Programs with Ncurses
Hearing the word ncurses brings back memories of second year computer science for me. Once upon a time. In a galaxy far far away
ToddWBurgess··on OnlyFans drops planned porn ban
The headline should have "For Now" appended to the end
ToddWBurgess··on Monday was my 46th birthday and likely my last (2013)
My mother passed away from ALS at 53. It is a terrible way to go
ToddWBurgess··on Ubuntu Makes Flutter ‘Default Choice’ for Future Desktop Apps
As both a Flutter dev and an Ubuntu user, I am thrilled by the news. Looking forward to seeing how it all works out.

In a nutshell, if anyone is interested how this works, the Flutter apps will be converted and compiled as GTK3 apps. Dart has the FFI package so it's fairly simple as a Flutter dev to do C system calls in Dart. This will of course stop your app from being cross platform out of the box (but I doubt this is a concern for the Ubuntu team).

ToddWBurgess··on The Lost Ways of Programming: Commodore 64 Basic
I think for most of here our first C64 program looked something like:

10 PRINT "TODD RULES"

20 GOTO 10
