Tiquor··on “Eat, sleep, code, repeat” is such bullshit
Every subculture that requires some level of above normal commitment has a phrase like this. Basbeall, ballet, musicians, dancers. It seems the current Medium post flavor of the month is some semi formed shot at a tentative of programmer/tech culture. Most end up being so overblown, like this one, it just sound like middle schoolers in the cafeteria.
Tiquor··on Why Aren’t Hiroshima and Nagasaki War Crimes?
Simply becauase the sensibilities and perspective that would make it one came into being after WWII.
Tiquor··on Laravel resigns from PHP-FIG
Struck me as a group struggling to continue to justify its existence. Excellent work on code style and auto loading and other areas though and I hope the community continues to look toward those resources.
Tiquor··on “Ask 'why' five times about every matter”
It can be done without just seeming rude. You just have to practice a bit.
Tiquor··on Does the Database Community Have an Identity Crisis?
Then don't use bad ORMs. What you are describing is caused by devs with poor understanding using ORMS as a crutch. That same dev would probably make a crappy schema without the ORM.
Tiquor··on “We're considering banning domains that require users to disable ad blockers”
This thread and the Reddit thread amaze me with the level of ignorance, but complete confidence in that ignorance, displayed in relation to how ads and ad blockers work.
Tiquor··on Does the Database Community Have an Identity Crisis?
Every widely used ORM allows direct SQL. Like many other things knowing when and where to use it is key. An ORM will be great for 90% of an app. When it is not a good fit, go direct to the DB/datastore. The point of enlightenment is not rejection of the ORM but rejection of the idea that the ORM is good for everything.
Tiquor··on All Male Panelist talks about Gender Equality & Inclusion in the Workplace
Just Google the name of the event and the company.
Tiquor··on CDNs aren't just for caching
I know this is marketing content, but are there devs that don't realize this?
Tiquor··on All Male Panelist talks about Gender Equality & Inclusion in the Workplace
If you do some research on the event you might get a different perspective. This appears to not be the only panel.
Tiquor··on All Male Panelist talks about Gender Equality & Inclusion in the Workplace
It very will might be if companies catch flack every time they put something like this together and for some reason or another are not able to meet some Facebook commenter's preferred representation ratios.
Tiquor··on Why ContentEditable Is Terrible, Or: How the Medium Editor Works (2014)
The ability tof have your storage format be your own is also an advantage that non Web editors have.
Tiquor··on Researcher links mass extinctions to 'Planet X'
It's even harder to believe that in the face of thousands of years of human progress and overcoming of the doomsday scenario of each decade and century that we still continue to fear tomorow.
Tiquor··on Why I don’t use CSS preprocessors
I started using a preprocessor because I wanted to be able to maintain and compose multiple stylesheets in a complex app with lots of subcomponents with some distinct styling. Once you do that, you've introduced a compiler in your workflow and it may as well be a preprocessor.
Tiquor··on Microsoft SQL Server Developer Edition Is Now Free
Certainly in the open source community, but MS SQL server is a really nice DB and has been for a while.
Tiquor··on Inheritance Is Terrible
Bad strawman is bad.
Tiquor··on You're a moron, Torvalds, not a cryptographer
The author seems to be missing a bit of Linus' point. It seems that the point Linus is making is that a collision along with the underlying data being meaningful is orders of magnitude harder than the collission, or produces easily detectable abberations. I'm not a cryptographic expert either but the author seems to be thinking more in a world of passwords where the underlying data often remains unknown. I think Linus is being somewhat pragmatic too and basically saying that if you think this is a problem then the whole thing is a house of cards.
Tiquor··on Why I'm leaving the R community
I basically said that the concept of "giving head" had transcended a particular gendered relationship. In other words it had moved far beyond just being about a women giving head and that it was just about human sexuality at this point. I said his stance on the phrase was behind the times. It wasn't exclusionary, it was sexual and I think those are important to distinguish.

He edited my post to say I only cared about telling people they were overreacting and talking about games. I own a company in the video game industry. What do you think my Disqus history will have in it?

Tiquor··on CEO to CTO: What Is Your RewriteRatio?
Is this really a KPI? It is really only measurable, not directly improvable. In addition, what does "improving" it mean? Is low good or bad? If we had a highly functional system and were growing 1000% then this number goes way up. Is that bad? This number, IMO, communicates very little between a CTO and CEO.

In additon, this number has no intrinsic value component. What is the value of being able to migrate to another system? Who cares? Rewrite for what? Does code rot? Are there bad spots like an apple? Does recreating the apple keep bad spots from being created next time?

There are only 4 states for a rewrite value judgement:

1. App is small and provides little business value..so who cares.

2. App is big, but low values so what's it matter.

3. App is huge and high value so better be very very careful.

4. App is small and high value, so why?

Your ratios restate that and provide no additional information in the only state that matters which is number 3.

Tiquor··on Why I'm leaving the R community
I wrote a reasoned, but critical, response to this guy and he edited my Disqus response with a childish personal attack before approving it. He justified it by saying my Disqus post history was about gaming and telling people they were overreacting. Take from that what you will.
Tiquor··on Why I Strive to be a 0.1x Engineer
I've worked in multiple fortune 500 companies and startups at the entry and now management level and been involved in Web Development for 20 years. I've never seen a LOC report except when we run some games with the other devs to see # of changes in GIT or other source control.
Tiquor··on Why I Strive to be a 0.1x Engineer
It didn't say the best product. It said "fastest" and "easiest to maintain" code, which are only two of hundreds of factors for success. Many of which are not code related.
Tiquor··on Why I Carry a Newton
I wasked just thinking about this today. I realized that Evernote on my phone is crap for meetings because I get all the other interruptions. It doesn't help me focus on the meeting it tees me up for failure.
Tiquor··on When did we stop caring about memory management?
When we got the wonderful blend of plentiful ram, inexpensive CPU and storage along with enough variety in languages and separation of architecture concerns that not everything you built had to care about memory.
Tiquor··on Software Eats Software Development as Andreessen Invests $10M in App Outsourcer
Turning the creation of derivative apps into a unique business model. Which sounds great as long as people continue to desire creating derivative apps en masse.
Tiquor··on Why I'm Excited About Native CSS Variables
I'm very excited for dynamic, succinct templating.
Tiquor··on Let's Encrypt Enters Public Beta
I'm disappointed that they don't support wildcard domains.
Tiquor··on Feature Flag-Driven Development
I'm well aware of the concept and have been doing this for years in my company's web apps. My sarcasm comes from seeing this covered as a revolution in software engineering as opposed to the application of some rather old concepts with new UI and broader application.
Tiquor··on Feature Flag-Driven Development
I like how one of the oldest concepts in programming, the ifdef, has now become (if you read the press) a "revolutionary idea" created by Facebook and apparently the core of a company's business. I'm only being a little sarcastic.
Tiquor··on First reported case of a paternity test fooled by a human “chimera”
No, I'm not learning English. The test is functionally identical. The relation to chimerism is not unique for a father vs a mother. It's just came across as a silly headline to me. I read most of the article and didn't see the reference to the maternity case.
