TingPing··on Whohas – Command-line utility for cross-distro, cross-repository package search
It already exists, the appstream spec can associate binaries with metadata.
TingPing··on Asahi Linux Progress Linux 7.0
In my personal experience macOS is fine but updates are often buggy or regress performance. Linux has just been the more polished option. Plus it just has a nicer desktop and apps.
TingPing··on Parallel agents in Zed
Just specify “image” https://containers.dev/implementors/json_reference/
TingPing··on South Korea introduces universal basic mobile data access
It’s technically problematic. The ISP should have little idea of domains you visit. And they can’t already when everything works.
TingPing··on Sweden goes back to basics, swapping screens for books in the classroom
I’m not sure anything was clarified. Nothing about that conversation is special or unique?
TingPing··on Cocoa-Way – Native macOS Wayland compositor for running Linux apps seamlessly
Linux has good support for m1 and m2, so for newer devices running a custom desktop would be neat.
TingPing··on Cocoa-Way – Native macOS Wayland compositor for running Linux apps seamlessly
This is how modern x11 worked too since nobody uses software rendering with x primitives anyway.
TingPing··on Node.js needs a virtual file system
“It works” is the bare minimum. Software is maintained for decades and should have a higher bar of quality.
TingPing··on MacBook Neo
iPhones would require an exploit.
TingPing··on MacBook Neo
The ability to install any software would be nice…
TingPing··on MacBook Neo
I assume you’re downvoted because Microsoft has to want that.
TingPing··on MacBook Air with M5
I think it’s wonderful, go for it if the few rough areas don’t bother you: https://asahilinux.org/docs/platform/feature-support/overvie...
TingPing··on MacBook Air with M5
Asahi is great on earlier models but it will certainly not support the M5 before its already multiple models behind.
TingPing··on I'm reluctant to verify my identity or age for any online services
You can just find adblocker rules for cookie banners.
TingPing··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
I’m not familiar with this but interested in trying it. From what I see they do and you need a certificate from them from a Enterprise Developer Account?
TingPing··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
There are multiple Linux shells that work on mobile today… They could become usable with some investment.

The main issue is Android apps that require certified devices, which would also be a problem for truly stripped down Android.

TingPing··on Zed editor switching graphics lib from blade to wgpu
I was talking about glyphon, wgpu-text, etc.
TingPing··on macOS's Little-Known Command-Line Sandboxing Tool (2025)
They are discussing a Linux kernel feature. Docker/Podman on macOS launch a virtual machine to function.
TingPing··on macOS's Little-Known Command-Line Sandboxing Tool (2025)
I don’t know if there are problems with this tool, but the App Sandbox is very configurable and every app store app is in one. It doesn’t make sense to maintain two different complex sandboxing solutions.
TingPing··on Show HN: A small, simple music theory library in C99
As usual, clang and gcc have great support, intel ok, msvc no.

C11 is probably the newest that’s widely adopted.

TingPing··on Zed editor switching graphics lib from blade to wgpu
From what I see wgpu isn’t using the same font stack as chromium. I think the Rust community would be against those dependencies.

You can just convert bitmap fonts, supporting them doesn’t make sense in 2026.

TingPing··on Notepad++ supply chain attack breakdown
Literally yes: https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2025/
TingPing··on Notepad++ supply chain attack breakdown
I feel like supply chain attacks are the much rarer situation than real world exploits but I don’t have numbers.
TingPing··on GOG: Linux "the next major frontier" for gaming as it works on a native client
Those games did weird things. Every distro still ships SDL1, x11 didn’t really break API, and requiring a specific driver is obviously broken from the start. I won’t say none of this happens but the platform isn’t to blame there.
TingPing··on GOG: Linux "the next major frontier" for gaming as it works on a native client
It makes zero sense for traditional distros to have payments. They exclusively repackage software. You want direct to customer platforms (Snap, Flathub, etc).
TingPing··on The browser is the sandbox
I'd have a very good hit rate, it mostly comes down to knowledge of toolkits. There are native apps that use their own toolkit, mostly written in Rust these days, and they always are worse than traditional toolkits (accessibility, respecting platform settings, visually fitting in, etc). That same issue applies to webapps typically.
TingPing··on The browser is the sandbox
Namespaces are very lightweight though? Like single digit overhead.
TingPing··on The browser is the sandbox
I’ve never used a webapp that felt nicer than native software, it’s always very clearly a compromise.
TingPing··on Show HN: TUI for managing XDG default applications
Older desktops don’t follow the specs and xdg-open does different things based on the desktop, so they indeed can get out of sync.

I’d have to look into your specific case but `gio mime` and `gio open` do the right things.

TingPing··on Banned C++ features in Chromium
It’s a bit different, but WebKit uses Clangs static analysis.
