Timshel··on Cheap DIY solar fence design
> but then you have freezing temperatures and snow covering the panels which makes them useless.

When vertical not much of an issue and the reflection from the snow appears to work well with bifacial.

The three example given are quite black and white ...

Timshel··on Redis is fast – I'll cache in Postgres
My comment is mainly in opposition to the "five minutes" part from parent.

If you have 5 minutes then you can't as you say :

> Then I will dig deeper into those things myself ...

So my point is I don't care if it's coming from LLM or a random blog, you won't have time to know if it's really working (ideally you would want to benchmark the change).

If you can't invest the time better to stay with the defaults, which in most project the maintainers spent quite a bit of time to make sensible.

Timshel··on Redis is fast – I'll cache in Postgres
> for only about five minutes of LLM query or web search

I think I have more trust in the PG defaults that in the output of a LLM or copy pasting some configuration I might not really understand ...

Timshel··on Redis is fast – I'll cache in Postgres
Since it's in the context of a homelab you usually don't change your hardware for one application, using the same resources in both test seems logical (could argue that the test should be pg vs redis + pg).

And their point is that it's good enough as is.

Timshel··on Burnend alive inside a Tesla as rescuers fail to open the car's door
They have, from the owner manual (page 106 https://ownersmanuals2.com/d/101316/volkswagen-id3-2025-owne...)

Automatic unlocking (Auto Unlock) All vehicle doors and the boot lid are automatically unlocked if one of the following conditions applies:

— In an accident, when airbags have triggered.

— Or: the electronic parking brake is engaged and the ignition is switched off.

—Or: the door release lever has been operated. This applies at speeds up to around 15 km/h(around 9 mph).

Timshel··on Neuralink 'Participant 1' says his life has changed
In a way it strengthens it since even if he became blind later one, still:

> It was, rather, the behavior of one mentally blind, or agnosic—able to see but not to decipher what he was seeing.

And while he does get better, it does end up with:

> But then, paradoxically, a release was given, in the form of a second and now final blindness—a blindness he received as a gift.

Timshel··on Vaultwarden commit introduces SSO using OpenID Connect

Timshel··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
Yes but thoose are Zen 3 Milan cpu released in 2021 I believe.

Not that they are bad and would not be way better than what they have, just that I though the parent was quite the optimist with his Zen4/Zen5 pricing.

Timshel··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
$2-3k ? That’s barely the price of a lower end Threadripper bare cpu not a full Epyc server ???
Timshel··on Perplexity offers to buy Google Chrome for $34.5B
I mean in term of user facing change. Vertical tabs is still presented as an innovation ...

Tabs groups are barely explored, and let's not dream too much of isolation Firefox containers are probably over ten years old and still almost unused :(.

More recently Arc and Zen are trying to innovate (I’m not using either), but they probably have almost no chance as long Chrome stay as dominant and financed by ad tracking.

Using Firefox on linux I’m facing more and more capchas and broken or innacessible websites. Ladybird is making great progress but unless they start posing as chrome they’ll face the same challenges :(.

Edit: > churning out more or less useful Web API implementations

Probably part of the problem since it makes maintaining a browser engine absurdly expensive and out of reach for almost everyone ...

Timshel··on Perplexity offers to buy Google Chrome for $34.5B
> the benevolent dictator of the web

Lol it's more like a death grip since nobody can compete with their ad business model. There is almost no innovation in the browser space outside of more and more tracking ...

Timshel··on AWS Restored My Account: The Human Who Made the Difference

Timshel··on Microplastics shed by food packaging are contaminating our food, study finds
Since it appears to be from the outer paint on the cap, it's relatively straightforward to select bottles with unpainted caps.
Timshel··on Self-hosting your own media considered harmful according to YouTube
I think your position is quite simplistic and completely ignore all the issues around YT pushing all kind of scam/misinformation which has tremendous impact (EX: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10226045/ or https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/jan/12/youtube-i...)

Could try to separate the pure hosting part of YT from the recommendation but since the home page heavily mix recommendations and the subscription page see almost no usage (Technology connection mention 4% traffic), I'm not sure if it makes sense to still consider YT as simple hosting.

And last point I'll make, I believe the fact that their moderation is such a crap shot job is mainly a reflection that it's not a priority.

Timshel··on Show HN: Air Lab – A portable and open air quality measuring device

Timshel··on Seagate claims spinning disks beat SSDs on carbon footprint
Thx, there is a graph for embodied cost at the start of page 3 and figure vary wildly.

The biggest drive at the time was 3840GB, and its production emitted ~425kg. But if we look at the more prevalent models the emission vary widly: for 512: between ~25 to 225kg and for 1024 from ~60 to 275kg.

And while the paper start with the assertion that manufacturing a Gigabyte of Flash emits 0.16 Kg CO2, I expect emission to be highly dependent on the number of flash module and not so much on the capacity itself.

Timshel··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
Their answer to moving to the US:

> Obviously we’d love to move our factories back home to Seattle. We just need to figure out to make the rain in Seattle power an assembly line.
