Timber-6539··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
The choice is not between that. It's between which of the two businesses can deliver outsized growth & returns back to the investor in their time horizon.
Timber-6539··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
Capitalism is bad because Elon won the game. Never mind that Sam Altman is a board member of the same non-profit he is trying to sell to himself for pennies.
Timber-6539··on When AI promises speed but delivers debugging hell
One can only imagine how many corners your friend had to cut to get to the product you call finished.
Timber-6539··on Ask HN: What does programming with AI feel like?
I find it is good for many things. A time-saver & productivity booster for domain that's already known aka problems that have already been solved.

For new stuff or stuff not in the public domain like that it is completely worthless. I also have to keep second guessing the results. Fortunate enough quality testing a bunch of code on a carousel to "good enough" status has never been easier.

Timber-6539··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
Let us cannibalize your app because it's so successful at doing X that we can't compete with you. It's a bizarre ultimatum for the owners of the app.
Timber-6539··on TikTok goes dark in the US
Why not call for the dismantling of the global advertising networks in the US rather than Tiktok since you think it is a giant propaganda machine?

Saying a foreign nation has the capability to brainwash your citizens into making a vote is propaganda by itself. It's not only cheap and imbecilic, it's a waste of everybody's time.

Timber-6539··on TikTok goes dark in the US
You are basically saying American adults are impressionable children hence cannot be trusted to participate in elections held by US electoral institutions.
Timber-6539··on Amazon's AI crawler is making my Git server unstable
One time had an AWS customer (Nokia Deepfield) spamming my shadowsocks server logs with unauthenticated attempts. Emailed AWS to curtail the abuse and they sided with their customer ofc.
Timber-6539··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
Biden's accomplishment is sending bombs to the IDF to aid Palestinian genocide.
Timber-6539··on Webtop – Alpine,Ubuntu,Fedora, and Arch containers containing full desktop envs
Just put up basic auth infront of your services and be done with it.
Timber-6539··on The Origins of Wokeness
“ A self-righteously moralistic person who behaves as if superior to others.”

This is accurate. A manifestation of the woke belief system. I see this bigotry all the time online whenever team blue joke about the right.

Timber-6539··on Apple opposes investor calls to end its DEI efforts
Stands for Corporate Social Responsibility. It was popular in the 90s/2000s. https://www.thomasnet.com/insights/history-of-corporate-soci...
Timber-6539··on Apple opposes investor calls to end its DEI efforts
Now that I think of it, DEI was a successor to CSR. With this chapter gone the next "CSR" primed to take over is Going Green.
Timber-6539··on Starlink is now cheaper than leading internet provider in some African countries
It's more nuanced than that. African governments, like any other government, want to regulate and control access to all communications and related infrastucture. Governments for example would like a killswitch they can force Musk to push if need be.

Also ISPs are big businesses with telecom companies paying huge sums for licenses (3G,4G licensing etc). Starlink is seen as jumping to the front of the line with little to no similar license requirements (or bribes if you want to call them).

Timber-6539··on 41% of Employers Worldwide Say They'll Reduce Staff by 2030 Due to AI
This report from WEF is anything but surprising.
Timber-6539··on Ask HN: How do you backup your Android?
My contacts are saved in Nextcloud. For other local data, I have Magisk and back up apps (including data) weekly using NeoBackup. Syncthing also comes in handy for other specific data that I need to save.
Timber-6539··on A story on home server security
Not a security issue. Docker explain it very clearly on their documentation. https://docs.docker.com/engine/network/packet-filtering-fire...

If you have opened up a port in your network to the public, the correct assumption is to direct outside connections to your application as per your explicit request.

Timber-6539··on Mercure: A WebSocket alternative for server-sent events
Going off my personal experience I don't see SSE being mentioned anywhere at all. But I always come across some new shiny web framework/wsgi listing websockets as a feature.

The reality is a lot of applications simply do not need bi-directional client-server communication but for some reason this abuse has been adopted as standard.

Timber-6539··on Mercure: A WebSocket alternative for server-sent events
SSE fixes some of the cargo cult practices formed around Websockets.
Timber-6539··on Why it's hard to trust software, but you mostly have to anyway
In many dimensions the software you can trust is the one you author, compile and ship yourself. Vulnerabilities cannot be avoided only mitigated.
Timber-6539··on Google's Results Are Infested, Open AI Is Using Their Playbook from the 2000s
This article woefully assumes OpenAI has had the same R&D that Google has had as a search business.
Timber-6539··on Does current AI represent a dead end?
There is nothing to build on top of this AI platform as you call it. AI is nothing but an autocorrect program, AI is not innovating anything anywhere. Surprises me how much even the smartest people are deceived by simple trickery and continue to fall for every illusion.
Timber-6539··on Sorry, Mad Men. The Ad Revolution Is Here
Biggest utility I see for AI personal assistants is in a recommendation system based on personal preferences. We are not breaking any barriers with this.

Trust implies some sense of consistency in results and LLMs have proven to be the opposite. Your whole argument's premise seems to be built on some of the dazzle created by AI assistants directly translating to advertising value. The connection is very loose here and to me only propagates the hype that's all too common in discussions about AI.

Timber-6539··on Sorry, Mad Men. The Ad Revolution Is Here
I doubt that is where the most advertising value on AI platforms will be created. Text as a medium has never been less relevant in a multi media digital world.

I can think of something like people generating a short video and some of the frames innocently containing brand placements. If people can share AI generations and these creations receive some semblance of popularity, that's where you will find advertisers. Most of the digital ad dollar value is created around social platforms. This recipe for success is already proven.

Timber-6539··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
This is no different from creating a to-do app with an LLM and proclaiming all developers are up for replacement. Demos are not what makes LLMs good, let alone useful.
Timber-6539··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
Facebook didn't censor themselves.

Mark admitted the source of the censorship on Rogan's podcast and again doubled down on this fact with a letter to Congress.

Timber-6539··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
Your rebuttal is corroborating my "lies".
Timber-6539··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
It doesn't sound exactly ridiculous when Zuckerberg also admitted those same intelligence agencies pressured them into censoring the Hunter Biden laptop story.
Timber-6539··on Digital consumption keeps me from getting better at my job
I personally find that learning about a subject you're interested in with an aim to solving a specific problem takes away the mundane part of the learning process. And the more problems I discover to solve motivate me to delve even deeper.
Timber-6539··on Syrian government falls in end to 50-year rule of Assad family
My light-hearted sarcasm was lost on HN.
