TideAd··on Internal Amazon documents shed light on how company pressures out office workers
I've seen "lines of code" used against someone at Amazon before. I'm sure the manager knew that it isn't a performance metric, but the manager had to hit a Unregretted Attrition (PIP) target so they just threw whatever they could think of at the person.

The institutional mechanism behind this insane thing is the URA target, just like many other insane things posted in this thread.

TideAd··on It's your device, you should be able to repair it
I suspect that a minority of people would choose to repair their old phones even if they were more repairable. When your phone dies, it's a good opportunity to buy something new and more fun. I don't know for sure but I don't think this would stop that much consumption.
TideAd··on Tufts student claims innocence after being expelled for grade hacking
Do you mind saying more? I've never heard of this before.
TideAd··on Ask HN: What's the largest amount of bad code you have ever seen work?
I've been working on fixing some old C++ code at my company so that it compiles with the most recent version of the compiler. To my surprise, the errors that the new compiler gives me are very reasonable. But I always ask myself, "how on earth did this ever compile in the first place?"

The crazy part is going into the commit logs and seeing that a lot of the people who wrote this have been very successful. They've become vice presidents, retired rich, and written influential papers.

TideAd··on My Amazon Interview Horror Story
I hear about companies telling candidates they "can't code" or "can't communicate" a lot. This just seems like a really rude and arrogant thing to tell someone. If you want to give a candidate feedback, give specific feedback and give it politely. The people who want to improve will get the picture. If you don't want to, just thank them for their time and interest.

Other than that, I think you're right. Some of this was really pretty normal and not worth being upset about.
